Should have tried this before i posted.. but it appears FF is still doing ok with UBO, at least as of this moment, so its the changes they are making in chrome.
****ers
lol well no. but yes.
I was testing by copying links into FF and they worked ( and yt-dlp, which also still works ). So i went ahead and logged in via FF, hit the first video, nope same result. Grrr.. But if you copy/paste the link into Chrome even it works, logged in or not don't matter. On a whim i did open in new tab. THAT works too.. Tho who knows for how long.
should not be this hard to avoid crap.

Well it was.
Looks like they have broken it to an extent. Unsure how bad.
Start video. Get a black loading screen ... then a full screen ad
that sits there.( i assume should be a video ). then it pops to the
video.
Might be done and stick with yt-dlp. Unless UBO can fix it in the
Invidious seems to be working here. I sent zelgomer a link recently and he didn't complain much.

It isn't. Turn your computer off and read some Monty Roberts book or something.
Ublock origin is still going strong in blocking YT garbage for
me.
Likewise for me with Brave browser, both on a real computer and on mobile.
The only time I see YT ads are when we cast to a big screen. And I've noticed something. The television app seems to be aware of whether you have a physical remote control. If you don't, it plays shorter ads. If you do, it plays longer, skippable ads.
Not heard of that one.
I had to quit using it via TV app. When i changed my YT to no longer track history, it bumped me out, and cant get back in at all, even anonymously.. Oh well. It was mostly just to let cats watch mice and birds. I can get them that stuff other ways and drop it out on my jellyfin server. Early on there were no commercials in those so it worked out ok, but just before i locked myself out they started to.. Cats would lose interest and wander off before the commercial break was over so was about to give up anyway..
I guess i could stream it from desktop where ads are blocked and i can login, but not worth the trouble when i can just download the video.

I normally do on stuff *I* want.
But these cat videos. often times they are 50+GB...
Sun Jul 28 2024 14:47:31 EDT from nonservatorDownload video like God intended. Streaming delenda est.
Is that the only format they offer? I almost always ytp-dl a medium quality copy, or even audio only. -F to list available formats, -f to pick a specific one. And you can mix and match whatever video and audio streams you want, like "-f 239+255", and ffmpeg will combine them for you. (Yes, this works on Windows too.)
Im sure if looked around i could find some other channels, but the one we normally watch is only 4K bla bla bla. But if i go too low, they don't look real enough for the cats i guess and they ignore it. Not sure what their threshold is, its hard to ask them directly :) . Even i i record them myself with bird feeders out in the back yard, it has to be as good as my camera can do or i get a ' eh, whatever ' and they move on. I tried an old camera i had, since i didn't want to leave the good one outside unattended ( not theft concerns, but a squirrel might knock it down ), but no, the video was ignored totally.
Tried just compressing these as is but no dice. Next im going look at a way to reduce quality a tad.. as storing a bunch of 50g video files out on the NAS hurts. I'm sure handbrake can do it, but never had to before, and just not looked too close, yet.

lol its brain dead easy to descale video. Just never cared to look, mostly used it to rip DVDs.
Running a test now, see how much smaller it gets. My TV isn't fancy 4k, so its silly to store that kind of file.
Well last night's test. going from 4K to 1080p -> Original 4K file 78G.. 1080p file.. 9G Took all night.. But there is no rush..
Copied it over to my media server and will have to test with the cats tonight if its 'good enough' but i don't see why not..
Man people are stupid. "YT is removing subscriptions from accounts, they are breaking the law" um no, idiot. Their house, their rules.
or the "they are trying to ban pro 2A channels and cut off their revenue, they are violating the constitution" Well, no, read the Constitution again.
its sort of what i tell people.
" Ya, its uncool But its their place, they can do it if they want, just like you can at your house with your guests. Don't like their rules, move on. "
Thu Aug 01 2024 11:27:42 EDT from nonservatorIt's a private company, sweetie! Don't like it? Just start your own nation-state!
So given the problem is going to persist either in a socialist or in a libertarian regime, I think I will take the small government anyway.
Legal? Yes. Slimy? Also yes.
There are two questions to ask:
1. Has Google created barriers to entry? If so, they are a monopoly in violation of the sherman antitrust act.
2. Is Google claiming common carrier protection under section 230? If so, they are not allowed to curate their content and search results to favor their own political preferences.
Or as ESR put it nearly a quarter century ago: "Market failure is only solved by freer markets. Historically, monopolies are unstable with a half-life of around fifteen years unless propped up by government-created barriers to market entry. Any public-choice economist will tell you that government intervention is chronically subject to political failure, a cure worse than the disease. In fact, not only does government intervention fail to be a reliable cure for `market failure', it is the primary cause of market failure -- as Theodor Vail, the founder of the government-sanctioned Bell Telephone monopoly, knew full well."
A true libertarian will hate Google because they're being propped up by their fellow government/industrial complex scumbags.
