Google Chrome basically has a monopoly in the browser market; most other browsers are just the Chrome engine, Blink, wrapped in a different GUI. Blink was forked from Webkit, which was forked from KHTML. So if you ever see a KDE developer, get in his face and scream "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!"
One might argue that this is the open source process doing what it was meant to do.
Consider that open source KHTML and its derivatives literally ended a Microsoft monopoly (Internet Exploder).

It is a good thing they are reoding, but they are not eroding fast enough.
Well that is a shame Google may discontinue ChromeOS Flex.
I know know google evil bla bla bla, but they keep politics out of ChromeOS, and for the most part Android. Still not tied to their garden, the base OS is still opensource.. etc.
Rumor is they are starting to disable manifest V2 plugins now, and pulling them off the store.
Cant allow those pesky ad-blockers now can we?
Last i heard brave is based on chromium. so it will matter to you in time. Attacking plugins is just the beginning.
Thu Nov 14 2024 14:35:34 UTC from IGnatius T FoobarI didn't and won't notice. I'm using Brave, which has the ad blocker hard coded into the browser instead of implemented as an extension. I say let the plebians see the ads and generate the ad revenue for whoever. Quite frankly most people don't deserve to have the Internet in the first place.
Worst case scenario, we load our adblock lists into something like Privoxy and block at the network level. And you know why? Because fuck off Google, you've misbehaved to such an extensive and obnoxious level that you don't get our money now. You built your empire on the backs of a community of people whose prime directive is to disempower rent seekers.
Yes i think long term solution is local ad-block at the DNS level. I dont think long term browser based code is going to work.
And ya, google went south some time ago from being the underdogs, to being just like the rest.
Thu Nov 14 2024 15:37:55 UTC from IGnatius T FoobarIt would be somewhat difficult for Goolag to stop downstream browsers from doing whatever they need to inside the browser source code to prevent them from gaining access to every page's actual manifest. De-open-sourcing Chromium is also a non starter because it uses existing open source components and has several downstream browsers (including Edge hehe).

Blocking at DNS level is what PiHole does. I've tried that, and wasn't impressed with the results. I think you need an entire adblock list loaded into an HTTP proxy, which is what Privoxy can do. Either on the same machine as the browser or network-wide to serve all local users.
It's an arms race. It won't end well for them.
Ill take a peek at that when i have some free time.
I tried pihole once, it seemed to do ok, but since i had ad blocker plugins, it was needless overhead and removed it. ( it was back when blockers for YT started to fail )

I find combining both DNS filters and proxy filters works very well. That is what I do at home. I have a DNS adblocker for all the devices I can't bother hijacking into an intercepoting proxy and then the rest goes, well, through an adblocking proxy.

If you don't want to put the work on it, there are DNS providers with adblocking enabled by default, like adguard or libredns. Just set your computer to use one of those and call it a day. Setting your own is more fun, though.
And safer, since YOU are in control... Even if the others are benevolent, i don't trust many.

Mine just get instantly deleted by the bot. Same effect, different method.
( i quit commenting long ago due to that. Why bother? )
ooooh, my ability to comment on youtube videos has been suspended for 24 hours because some crybaby there didn't like something I said. Dunno what it was but I hope whoever did that gets so upset that they pop a blood vessel in their brain and drop dead.
Friend of mine has that google home voice controller thing. He asked it to turn on a light. Instead of turning it on, it asked "what is the value".
Tried it several times, same result. He finally said "Zero value"... then it turned the light on.

You deserve the bad karma you get for participating in youtube and other mainstream tech sites.
