I like horses. ( all animals really )

Sat Jul 12 2025 09:16:06 UTC from darknetuser
You're not fooling anybody, man. I mean horse.

You don't know how much of a let down I am having. I thought this was a safe space from discrimination. I am tired of people not lettimg me into the bus because I am a horse, or not letting me near the vegetable stands in the grocery store because I am a horse. All I wanted in life was to show up at some digital place and be treated normally.

We treat you great because of who you are, not because of who you're pretending not to be :)

Latest chrome update. Disabled several of my plugins. And no
option to turn them back on. 'its our computer now, serf'

Is this the Manifest V2 shutdown? If so then I'm surprised you got this far; most others got it months ago.

If you're part of the free world you should be using Brave. Not only does the adblocker work perfectly because it's hardcoded into the browser rather than as an extension, but they're also headed up by Brendan Eich who is on our side. Compare with Firefox, which is made by Mozilla, who fired Brendan Eich, and is a company that is 5% software and 95% woke activism. They are bad people. Do not use their software.

Pale Moon is the browser I use. It uses an engine called Goanna, its own fork (NOT a rebuild, a fork) of Gecko. It is not perfect (there are a few sites that do not render/function properly), but it is the closest thing to an independent AND usable browser that exists.

I started looking at the Ladybird browser project, but then I discovered that the infamous mega-douchebag Mike Shaver is on their staff, so I hope it fails spectacularly.

In short:

Brendan Eich = good, therefore Brave = good

Mike Shaver = douchebag, therefore Ladybird = bad

I want to like Pale Moon, but the development team are assholes, in a way that make using the software toublesome. This is worse than when some asshole makes software and you just shrug and use it anyway.

Basically, Pale Moon enforces Mozillaesque licensing on their browser and enforce it heavily as if they were a big badass corporation instead of a two dev project, so they go around bullying anybody who attempts to produce an independent packaged version. Do you feel like publishing a Pale Moon build script for OpenBSD? They will knock on your door with threats. In many cases they act within their rights, but that does not mean they are less assholeish for it.

It actually sucks because the web browser itself is quite sane compared to modern Firefox.

I remember you mentioning that having idiots subsidize your computing was a good stratgy. I don't find a fault on the logic of using Firefox from woke Mozilla and enjoy browsing while they pay for it. The real reason that casts a shadow on Firefox itsemf is that it is a bloated piece that is not private by default and requires fixes to unfuck it. On the other hand, I think a fixed Firefox is a very good experience.

That is the most beautiful thing anybody has told me this week so far, except for something Mary told me. Mary told me "I love you, know I want pats" in horse, multiple times.

We're currently living in a world where all browser engines are built by bad people.  At least the good folks at Brave are doing us a favor by sanitizing Chromium.

Even the organization behind the completely original Ladybird browser employs Mike Shaver, one of the biggest assholes in the known universe.

If we had stuck with the original plan of being a universal dumb graphical terminal, in effect, and not gone down the route of "client side everything"  we would not be in this mess today.

Not real sure who to blame. I know the JS people did it, but i also know Guido tried it with python ( anyone remember Grail?) , not sure if it was after JS or that it was the idea catalyst.. its been too long, and too lazy to research.

Remote terminal was tried so many times. RIP, NAPLPS, half a dozen Macromedia/Adobe plugins, you could even use the HTML5 canvas object if you really wanted to do a server side rendered user interface. Remember, it was pretty early in the game when Marc Andreesen observed that the browser would become the universal operating environment. He was right, and Bill Hitler knew he was right, and Netscape was murdered before that could happen, but it was inevitable anyway.

The market spoke, and it said it wanted more than a remote canvas.

From a news article:

"Perplexity AI, an artificial intelligence startup, has made an unexpected $34.5 billion offer to buy Google’s Chrome browser.

The bid is larger than Perplexity’s own current valuation, but the company says it has secured funding commitments from several investors to make the deal possible. Google has not responded to requests for comment, and The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the news.

Perplexity is best known for its AI-powered search engine, which gives users quick, straightforward answers along with links to the original sources. Just last month, the company introduced its own AI-based web browser called Comet.

By making a bid for Chrome, Perplexity appears to be aiming to dramatically grow its reach in the browser market and combine its AI features with one of the most popular browsers in the world."

That would mean the end of Chromium and ChromeOS. Both would be a loss to the community.

That might not mean what you think it means. What do you do if you know your core business is ridiculously overvalued? You buy something that actually has value.

When the AI bubble collapses -- and it *will* collapse -- they'll have a browser business and all the eyeballs attached to it.

My ongoing concern is if it closes down the OSS side.  Which these companies want, OSS is competition ( well other than abusing it for free beta testing, feature needs, and bug fixes.. ).     And yes i agree like every bubble, it will burst.  The question is what dies with it?

Rumor is AndroidTV ( the TV-ized android ) will soon have Gemini embedded. Some time ago my ( branded ) Android box for TV got "upgraded"..  Was not pleased. Its bad enough now, unless you swap out the launcher, ( which is a pain now.. ) as you get background ads constant on the 'home' screen.  I really don't want Gemini looking at what i watch then suggesting paid 'alternatives' on top of that.

Everyone's embedding AI into everything now, it's pretty much a given. Pretty much any smart tv is going to have telemetry, that's part of how they offset the cost. Obviously you can still plug your own box into the HDMI port.

I suppose some of you may have heard right now that Goolag is taking the first steps to close up sideloading on Android. At this stage they're only demanding that sideloading now requires "signed applications" so that you "know that the developer is who they claim to be."

Louis Rossman is pointing out that if they move to an app store only model, then at that point you might as well be on iPhone.

And so we will wait and see.

I am staying with GrapheneOS for the time being, but if Google goes that route the only customers they will have left are people from developing countries purchasing budget smartphones under the 150 USD range.

I actually doubt they'll notice a blip in the US. Nobody but the sweatiest of geeks are loading apps onto their Google phones from F-droid or other non-Google sources.
