Oh, im sure it was. sex sells. Even when it makes no sense to associate it to a product. But being who i am i didnt even notice the actual content, i just noticed the colors.. tech first :) But then i noticed the price.. arrgh. I guess there is now an 8" version. Which i think for most things the best size, but its 500+
Perhaps in a generation or 2 the price would be justifiable, but having a 6", the Gen 1 color devices have a use case, but are not quite ready to replace a grey scale ink device for general use.

I took a look - they are interesting devices, and, as the prices fall, my interest rises. My Galaxy Tab is overkill for taking notes and reading ePUB books. This could be a lighter, more energy-efficient way of reading on a larger (than my phones) device without needing a full-blown mobile OS (even though they do use Android) and a 5G connection. Note-taking, depending on how the screen feels and the application they use, could be a better experience. I find that the softer screens that these e-ink devices use are easier to write on (for me).
For me, i dont like reading on LCD, it wears out my eyes after enough time with the constant glow. E-ink is a world of difference. Its a totally different technology. I was a super early adopter. However, until now if i needed color, LCD was it. Now there is a widely availble option. ( previous attempts at color a few years ago, was mostly in Russia, and was not very good )
Note that not all use android. PB for example is their own OS. But, its a reader, not a tablet replacement of any kind so i dont see that being a big deal. I hear people complain all the time " refresh rate is too slow .. bla bla. cant watch a video" um, no, you cant, to buy a tablet instead and watch your cat videos..
For writing, you can get various screen protectors with different textures.
( and i still think its funny i was trying to make what became e-eink, back in the 80s.. using static electricity to move ink droplets around to make a display.. same basic concept . another missed boat for me :) )

I've heard wonderful things about Fry's but as a northeasterner I've never been to one. And now I suppose I never will.

And yes, i'm a sucker. the 7.8" color reader is on its way.
/me kicks himself. Now its time to sell off a couple of my other ones to recoup some of the frivolous spending of late. ( not that spending an extra 350 is going to make a difference, but i'm trying not to totally waste money out of principle )
The one here felt more like a larger best buy, with more selection. But often times their online prices weer WAY lower. Buyer beware.
I wonder if they will keep their online presence. Or if the entire company is folding.

Fry's spent a lot of time murdering themselves.
Part of the problem was they made a reputation for selling cheap, gray market Chinese crap for CHEAP. I once bought a pair of headphones from Fry's, thought they were a wonderful price for Sony... got all the way home and realized they were "Coby".
Their open box returns were notorious, their return process was a hassle. Their sales guys were hostile *and* uninformed.
It was kind of like an Easter Egg hunt trying to figure out where the great sale item might be hidden in the store.
Amazon offered all the cheap - with far fewer of the hassles.
And Fry's drove out Mom and Pops tech stores when they arrived.
I know i mentioned it before, but they were the ones that sold me the wrong, old crusty video card that was broke in 1/2 and was shrink wrapped. i think anyway. The place was called 'incredible universe' at the time, but years later the sign changed to Fry. Donno if it was the same company or just the same building/concept.

Bezos has gotten a bunch of small business men to work at his beck and call, as his unpaid employees - and gotten them to take on all the liabilities.
If you can come up with a better idea - a lot of them would be willing to make you as rich as Bezos, too.

Incredible Universe was a different gig. They were owned by Tandy, I think. CompUSA was a big box competitor at the time, too - and all basically fought in the same space. Best Buy came along and went, "let's make this a little more upscale. We'll charge more, but our Blueshirts will at least be friendly - and we won't carry no-name Chinese shit."
When Incredible Universe failed, Fry's bought a lot of their stores.
On your coast, if you've been to Micro Center - that is pretty much like Fry's computer department, except Fry's is huge and sells soda, has a snack bar, has aisles of general electronics gear, weird toys... a record section, exercise gear, drones... shavers and personal groomers, massage chairs... it IS a geek wonderland - and there won't be any place like it once it is gone.

Ah, so it was a buy-out not a rename. They did seem like the same sort of store, so it made sense it was just a name change. I olny went back once, long after the name change and after i saw the prices compared to their own online prices, and still remembering how i was treated before, i bailed and went down to the east side of town to a real electronic supplier, and paid 1/2 their price ( i needed cable to run in an office at the last minute ). Fool me once. The other store closed up couple of years ago. Some 40 years in business. Sad day.
Not been to Microcenter in person, but driven past once on my way back home from a meeting in Cinci. Looked like a good sized building, but i was flying past on i74 and didnt feel like stopping just to window shop. Bought some filament from them for my printer a few times, mail order.
I'm thinking they are a Kroger subsidiary now.

How did Amazon get so big? People chose to shop there. No one forced people to buy online instead of the local store. The government didn't force Amazon on us.
