I think this was mentioned somewhere else, i lose track sometimes in the rooms.

Reading more, this could be a mess for the future of ARM after-all.  A huge part of the market is the cheaper Chinese chips. If they really have lost access to future ISAs that means either the chips will become obsolete quickly, or they will venture out on their own and extend the ARM ISA, and no longer be compatible. Not sure if other Chinese companies can/allowed to work with ARM UK directly, or if it all funnels thru the Chinese ARM company that is in the middle of this mess.

And throw in NVIDIA, they get holding a shorter stick than they had before.

what a cluster-F

When push comes to shove, China does not really respect intellectual property rights, so I'm not sure that will hurt them too much in the long run.

What *will* hurt them is loss of access to the equipment that's required to build sub-10nm fabs, particularly EUV equipment, if trade sanctions continue.

Neat. Not that GPU projects for risc v is new but this one is getting a lot of traction it seems and a CUDA port, well that is cool.

Going thru stuff again today, tossed about 5 old cell phones and 2 tablets ( none are worth donating, wont talk to current networks  ).  Old hard drive ipod was in that box too.  memories.  My sansa was in last week's box, now in the trash.

Ran across a tablet i forgot i had.  Glasses free 3D.  Had a lenticular display of some sort. Was not 'practical' but was neat. Trying to charge it now, see if it still works.

Do not get rid of the Newton.

Send it to me before you send it to e-recycling or a thrift store.

Ya, the newt is too important to toss like those old phones and commodity tablets.  Was just surprised to run across it.

The calculators were borderline special ( HP 32E, 41CV, 48G.  They took me from early high school thru college to my first job ) but they are not all that uncommon, and they did go to someone, not a dumpster.

Well, this is encouraging. linus ( the canadian tech guy, not torvalds ) just dropped nearly 250 grand to buy stock in them.

I saw that video too. Between that and his new house, he must really be making bank on those videos.

This is something everyone wants to see succeed but not a lot of people want to risk being the pioneers in case it doesn't work.

More cleanup/purge today.

On the back cover of book " We predict in 10 years, computers will be the size of a TV set". Book was from the mid 70s.  They missed the mark, thinking in straight lines, not curves.

Bunch of old Byte, and glossy Atari ST magazines, back when you got a disk taped to the cover.   Times have changed so much.       ( anyone remember getting the little flexible plastic 'records' in magazines, and sometimes with cereal boxes? )

Yup, to all of this.

Byte and glossy Atari ST magazines have significant value in retro-communities. Don't just dump those.

PinePhone is a step in the right direction. We still need to move towards a single device that can be both your phone and your laptop depending on whether there's a big screen attached to it.

And for the time being, the ability to run Android apps (safely de-googled of course) would seem to be a requirement.

Im not going to get into the first batch, like i did the 'first' phonephone, but next year i will get a GA version.

IF its as i suspect, it could be both portable and desktop. Sure, it wont be eating Intel i5s for lunch, but that Rockchip CPU they are using is more than enough for a lower end desktop, especially since most people only need a browser these days.  Not all i agree, but most.

I dont have an i3 anymore to do a fair 1:1 comparison, but my RK's "feel" about the same to me as my old I3 using onboard video. The i3 i had, i blew up.. had a usb crytpo miner attached to it catch fire ( literally, 5" flames out the back of it )  and burn everything but the ram and SSD. even the CPU was gone.

That same chip is in a few Chromebooks too. ( one of mine is running it. the one i carry daily ).

Subject: BeagleV Not dead afterall

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Not from Beagle, but the board may still come out.  That is a good thing.  Proliferation of cheap boards in the RPI/ARM marketspace should help with future mainstream adoption of RISC-V, outside of IoT.

At least until governments realize they cant mandate backdoors on the chips and even outlaw its verilog...
