People buying most digital content make no sense to me.

Think of all the things people are paying monthly for now that they could own forever not too long ago.
I do have my old iphone 3 in a box. somewhere. ( not that i need it or was going to use it again, i hate tossing stuff i paid dearly for :) )
I have my 2 old iPods too, same reason. Of course they wont login to anything. They were the only reason i had a personal account, freaking iTunes. ( until i figured out how to add/remove songs without it ). Another thing that pissed me off was with my Gen3 iPod: You *had* to plug it into the OEM fire-wire power adapter to erase it, but you could use regular USB to charge/update. Really? wtf?

Yup. Apple has become more and more onerous the more secure they've become in their position.
Are the iPod touches or iPod classics? An iPod Touch, you should be able to set up Wifi and set it up to be a "recovery" device. I forgot how I figured out my Apple password this time around - I think that the original recover is the tricksy part - because you've got to have a machine that can get in. I know it is a nightmare.

The pods have no connectivity. They are far too old for that. One is a Gen3 classic ( with a HD, pre-flash ) and a gen 1 nano ( i think that is what they called it )
I ended up with a sansa and tossed them both in a box. Up until my phones had enough space to replace that. Was using a mini-disk before the iPod, but suddenly going from that to something like 20 gig.. was a wonderful thing. And the interface really wasn't bad for a simple music player, so i give them credit for that. The sansa, was similar, but had too many extra menu entries. BUT it was a simple copy files affair.. and could be expanded and beat on since no moving parts.
Sort of wish i had kept my creative labs device .. the one that used a parallel port to load it. I was a super early adopter of mp3.
Me too.

Yup. These came later. Creative was first out of the gate - and I loved the Zen. 30mb HD - actual hard drive. They were way ahead of the curve. But like lots of companies from back then that were way ahead of the curve - it wasn't the best place to be.

iTunes is unreasonably difficult with moving music around. Otherwise they would truly have the market locked up.
Their method does make it trouble free for the totally incompetent, though.
It always amazes me that Millennials think we're technologically illiterate because they *really* understand iDevices.

Wed May 12 2021 00:34:59 EDT from ASCII ExpressThe Sansa can run Rockbox, which has a primitive but usable speech synthesizer. It saved me on at least one trip. I had an iPhone for a long time and hated putting music on it because of iTunes. Switching to Android made that a lot easier obviously.
I dont know if it works now ( i doubt it ) but there was a 3rd party tool that let you load songs onto iPods just like any other mp3 player. As soon as i found it, gone was iTunes for me. But once i dropped the iPod, i never looked back, so it may not be doable now.

More than once "um, before you accuse me of being old and tech-ignorant you little wet behind the ears twit, you do realize that the tech you are using right now, MY generation created, right?

I had one of these solutions once, too. The problem with solutions like these are that they're a cat and mouse game of Apple breaking it, and the developer fixing it, and Apple breaking it again.
All in the quest to "enhance end user security and experience."

Advantage to the old gen iPods is they would not get updates.. so whatever worked once worked forever.

Yup, a cat and mouse game, exactly. I wrote an iOS app for a company, then used some of the money I made from it to buy an Android phone and never looked back. Now I can use rsync.
Well... if they can't break it on the side of your HARDWARE with an UPDATE...
They break it on the side of there servers with a change that your hardware can't be updated to support.
They've got you either way.

Agreed with modern devices, but these had zero connectivity, there was no server side to hose you. Back then we didnt have nearly universal data, or unlimited bandwidth to do such a thing. Yet another 'simpler time' discussion :)
Tho, those sorts of devices still do exist, just have to get them from china. Dedicated players.
Old android phones, are great for it too.
