Yeah, well, look, I was criticizing the left. On Friday night. So, alcohol aside I'm just not a big fan of being told that I didn't agree with someone in quite the right terms or with the emphasis in exactly the right place. And I'm not a fan of messages that read like a "wall of text" that get kind of personal. It just comes across as a little too intense, and I would say that given all the history you should know better than to talk past people like that. Sometimes it's not what you say, it's the way you say it.
And I can hear it coming: "but people get too sensitive about things!"
Thing is, that's on you if you're being obtuse to the point of obnoxiousness. You said something like this once, so I'll paraphrase it: if someone gets oversensitive with you now and then, as an isolated incident, that's on them. But if you find that consistently, everywhere you go, you think that everyone is being oversensitive with you: that's an indication that maybe you're the problem. Perhaps this should feed into the other tech journalism discussion in the other room.
To paraphrase the paraphrase:
"It's easy to criticize Israel without being called an antisemite. The trick is to not be antisemitic, a feat that most antisemites have not yet mastered. So they constantly feel that their 'criticism' is being conflated."
None of the above should be confused with the current left/right polarization around politically correctness issues - that's not what I'm talking about here.
For example, on Thursday I found myself in a conversation with an Asian woman who is a coworker. Based on her last name I think she's Chinese.
I used the word "Korean" as a singular noun.
She said "Korean PEOPLE, please."
What followed was a lengthy disccussion about how I believed my usage to be both (a) grammatically correct, and (b) not offensive in the slightest.
She took it all in stride, but at one point she said, "if you know it makes people feel better, why don't you just say it?"
So I continued to gently push back on that, I continued to patiently argue the point. I think, ultimately, she bought it.
(Think about the etymology: "Korean" is like "Italian", which comes from the Italian word "Italiano", which comes from the Middle Latin "Italianus." The root is "Italy" and the Latin suffix is "-anus", the same as "Romanus." Which literally means "Person from Rome.")
(I didn't say she was being a bit of an -anus, but maybe I thought it.)
I'm acutely aware of the ridiculous sensitivity on the left, and do not approve.
Of course. And that's why you command respect around here. You may be a statistical outlier on some issues but you're not of the "everyone not as extreme as me is hitler!!!11" variety.
As for walls of text ... only when they're building a detailed explanation of something. If it's the same old stuff said over and over again, it's boorish in conversation, it's boorish here.
We also have a little history, at this point that may make us tend toward being defensive with one another.
And to be honest - this is your "local." You've been here as a regular for a long time.
And how do you think I came UP with that observation? Nosce te ipsum. I've been in a lot of rooms - and sometimes it has been that everyone in the room has been an asshole...
But it has been the other way around a fair number of times, too.
So... no harm - we may not always agree on a lot of things... but... I think we're getting better at navigating our personality conflicts.

I suppose if you're going to engage in toxic discourse ... do it on
Twitter!
I do don't support such notion. Twitter feds off toxic discourse. Taking toxic discourse there just makes it stronger than it already is.
I try not to be. If i ever do someone toss a donut at me and tell me to shut up for a minute.

Possible. There does need to be a "LoanShark is drunk as a skunk tonight" status klaxon on the Webcit thing.

The problems are probably exaggerated when both Loan Shark and Paranoid Delusions are logging in drunk near or about the same time. :)

See, everyone should try something hallucinogenic at least once.
But, in a controlled environment. Speaking from experience ( accidental experience )
