More websites need to find out a way to attract dead users.

I would say that any public web site that's been around for a while has some dead people in its account list.

It isn't a problem unless those users actually keep logging in. Then you've got to do something about the zombies.

Who thought of the idea that popping out a video on a webpage so that it scrolls down the page was a good idea.  This person is worse than hitler.  (hitler with a small h)

Well, I imagine the zombies are only an issue if they go after the web site's braaaains.....otherwise they just groan a lot.

GRRRRRRRRR

Someone who should have known better, gave my name and phone number to a little old lady whose computer isn't working ("got hacked" but who knows what actually happened).

There are TWO THINGS that I absolutely do NOT do: tech support, and returning phone calls.

So the voice message gets deleted.  Once word gets out that you are "the computer guy" you own everyone's problems forever.

So it would be better if not a little old lady?

I don't care if it's Mother Fucking Theresa, I...

Wait a minute, that didn't sound right.  That was the word "fucking" interposed into a two word phrase or name for added impact.  I did not intend to invoke the word "motherfucking" ... dammit.

Point made, however.  I don't care who it is.  I don't do tech support.  I paid my dues.  I did my time.  I'm not the computer guy.

Haha, I can absolutely understand that. I do tech support for two little old ladies, each one the mother of a client. They have the oddest problems, one of them manages to hack her own laptop up regularly. I have rarely seen such odd problems. Both should be using iPads.

I usually do not do tech support for private people, but these two pay so well, it is like owning a cash cow. Which sounds a bit odd and invokes the image of milking little old ladies. Deal with it. :-)

It's soooooo frustrating. Now I'm the bad guy because I won't do desktop support (an area that I worked hard to get out of) for someone I don't work for. The question of whether it would be paid work or pro bono is irrelevant.
I don't want to be "the computer guy" and we all know there is NO such thing as "just this once."

Why are IT pros expected to put up with this crap when no other trade does?
My neighbor is a mechanic, but I don't ask him to come over and fix my car.
The other neighbor owns a construction company, but I don't ask him to come over and patch sheetrock.

It's because, in people's minds, it'll only take a moment.

Rarely do they realize that moment blossoms into a lifetime commitment.

No eggs, but some spoons full of slowly whipped cream.

They do that because they think computer work is no real work. Although everyone sees that the whole economy runs on computers now, it still is like 1985. The nerdy basement kid from next door has a new toy, so probably knows about your computer, too. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/computers

So a proper comparison would be asking the next door art teacher to paint something decorative for your living room. For free.

(My wife is an art teacher, these things really do happen.)

Same kind of thing happens with translations. People assume that because I'm a native English speaker that I can instantly translate texts into English (I live in Japan), when the reality is that a translation usually takes about as much time as writing the original document. I imagine the same thing happens in other countries with other languages. The work you want the other guy to do always seems much easier (to you) than the work you do yourself.

Does growing old *really* beat the alternative?

As you get older, your body starts to fail. You start to experience pain that never goes away.

Snuff it, though, and all of that goes away. All your worries and cares just evaporate.

All your joys do, too, I suppose.

So it's really kind of a judgement call, I suppose. If your joys outweigh your problems, and you can't reduce your problems or increase your joys, maybe it's reasonable to kill yourself, if rather selfish (assuming others love you, despite being a miserable wreck).

Bottle deposits.  Why do some states have this?  The answer I always get is "Because it helps with recycling"  NO IT DOES NOT.  If you didn't have a deposit you would place the items in with your other recycled items and take it to the curb.  The residents of other states can comprehend this.

I see Hannaford Supermarkets has introduced something called Clynk in New York and Maine.  This will add yet another step in the unneeded process.  You place your refundable (deposit) items in a special bag, place an id sticker on that bag, lug the bag to the store, scan your special card at the kiosk, and then place your bag in the container.  You don't have to sort it, the new machine does all the work.  Then after a few days the deposits returned to your account.  You can use YOUR MONEY at the checkout, or donate it to charity*.

A stupid unneeded process made more complicated and it also delays you getting your money back.

* An organization set up to provide help and raise money for those in need, not a person named Charity.

Its original intention was to provide an economic incentive to get more people recycling. When recycling programs first launched, few if anyone wanted to bother with it at all. It worked; most people have some impetus to recycle these days. I do agree that the mechanism is obsolete these days, and should either be replaced with a different incentive program, or with the increasing deployment of computer vision systems, just eliminate the distinction all-together and rely on sorting at the waste management plant.

They recycled during WWII.  There used to be scrap metal drives, people donated scrap metal to a charity and they took it to a recycle plant.  I can't believe people wouldn't recycle if there wasn't a five cent deposit attached.

Recycling costs too much, ostensibly.

Maryland has an aggressive recycling program that beats people over the head with the effort. But, they remain very quiet about the overall cost of the effort, and the degree to which it has saved taxpayers money.

I suspect it costs more than it saves.

Probably.  A few years ago we had to separate cans, bottles and paper now it gets all thrown in together.  I have no problem with recycling, I have a problem with deposits.
