LOL... a sim is a sim. I suppose it gives you some idea of where your line should be and what speed you can take the corner at - but mostly - it helps you memorize a track and learn if there are any tricky corners. :)

But yeah... when you're not just going to bounce off the wall without any actual damage and keep going, one tends to be less cautious than in meatspace.

Nothing the matter with knowing the cars limits are way beyond yours.

I raced a Dodge Challenger 392 a few days ago, in my M235i.

I was pulling out aggressively across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic from the Left into a merge lane on the right. As I merged, I noticed a black car off to my right back corner. He punched it, hard... and the engine really growled - so I dropped right in behind him and punched it. Traffic opened, and I pulled aside him at the next light - and I could see he was already full of regret. We exchanged some pleasantries, and he said, "So, do you want to do this? I've gotta tell you, I think you're going to take me. I can't put it down without spinning the wheels..."

We agreed, light turned green - and 0 to 60, I had him by a SIGNIFICANT margin. He was starting to pull me in, and would have passed me on a 1/4 mile, though.

I told him I was pretty pleased with the results at the next light. He looked less so. :)

got the chance to drive a GT-R on track this Saturday for 4 laps (after riding in the back of a Hellcat on the same track for a warmup)

Turns out that my Gran Turismo skillset (not practiced in 15-20 years) does not exactly translate over, so my approach was pretty darn cautious. This was a small track, and I'm scared shitless of this car.

If I was going to really do this, I'd need a lot more practice laps, probably in my 330i which I'm more comfortable with.

Does yours have 8-speed auto? The software launch control makes that business WAY too easy.

It does. The M235i has the ZF, not the DCT in the M4 - so it isn't *quite* as quick as the M4 on shifting - but probably still faster and more accurate than I would be rowing my own gears.

I prefer a manual - but they're getting really hard to find, and I didn't want to travel all the way to the East Coast and I'm glad I didn't wait - because prices have appreciated considerably since I bought.

I think the FMIC on the M235i isn't completely up to the challenge - and gets heatsoak really fast. I pulled away from a newer body style Mustang 5.0 from a rolling start - hard, when I first got it. But the second run, he took me and I didn't have the same kind of power I had on the first run. That was in the dead of summer here though, and it was well over 100 degrees.

I'd love to get a track day. Don't even know where to begin, though.

PSA: when you rivet diamond plate panels onto your jeep, you really dont need to be paranoid and add adhesive strips behind it. That is if you *ever* want to remove them. arrgh.

Just dont strip the bolts ( make sure the engine is cold.. ) and use
a GOOD brand you will be fine.

While y'all were tooling around in your bimmers, I repaired my son's 20 year old Camry. :)

Just lettin' ya know that it went fine.

I am not good at automotive repairs. These are going to be the last generation of petrol fueled cars, though... and I'm going to resist electric as long as I possibly can... which may mean I might have to learn a thing or to.

Personally the only nice thing about solar would be if you are stuck out somewhere with no gas, you could always whip out a solar panel. And given enough time get on the road again

i suppose a hybrid that had BOTH drive trains, not just a lawnmower engine dedicated to charge a battery, might not be terrible.

I just think electric is *cheating*. It doesn't feel *natural*. I'm not a big fan of Audi - they make fast cars that handle like they're on rails... but you're really just sitting in the driver's seat *suggesting* what you would like to do... it is doing all the actual driving.

Not gonna happen. Even a huge 12-cylinder diesel locomotive is just an electric train with a generator on board.

The govern-mental is going to murder the internal combustion engine the same way they murdered the incandescent light bulb: by instituting efficiency requirements ridiculous enough to make it impossible.

I'm not against electric vehicles; I just don't think we're quite there yet.
I suppose at some point I'll end up getting a little electric shitbox to putter around town, and keep my truck for hauling stuff around.

And yes, I do want the roof to be a solar panel. I don't care how slowly it charges. If it's parked 99% of the time it'll top up eventually.

No, but it can. No one may build it for consumer consumption, but it can be built.

I vaguely remember Leno driving something like that around.. could be wrong tho.

But they're not *real* automobiles. They're golf carts.

Most people don't care about drive trains and performance and other car stuff.
They just want a box with wheels to drive to the local Starbucks.

This electric steering on the recent BMWs feels the same way. Super precise but strangely effortless, and utterly lacking in road feel.
