The problem with botox is that people don't use enough of it. It's called
botox because it contains a toxin produced by Clostridium Botilinum, the same
bug known as botulism when it appears as food poisioning. So all you really
need is a lot of botulism, the person gets really really sick, and they end
up looking as bad as if they had received dental floss through the eyebrows.
Hmm. That was an incredibly long setup for not much of a joke. I need to work on this.

TIL...that Turkey Joints are an overly expensive confectionery item and not a horrific pickled poultry product.

TIL that "Item #4" is the name of a landscaping product. I had assumed that
it was just carelessness on the part of my supplier's web site (as in, "we
have gravel, sand, dirt, and Item #4") and there had previously been Items
#1, #2, and #3 in the web template they used. But it seems that "Item #4"
actually refers to a mixture of 4 size stones ranging from dust to 3/4" stone,
intended to tightly pack to form a stable base for patios and walkways.
Those wacky landscapers!

TIL that you can terminate a FB friendship with a couple of anti-Semites (which was the right thing to do) and still feel bad the next day because, let's face it, I was drunk.
Really gave these two a good telling-off, though. Fricken Nazis.
Anybody got some more Jack Daniels? I'm really on a tear this week.

Sorry to hear you are having a rotten week. I have some Quarter Horse bourbon somewhere at home, I wish I could send you some over telnet.
Yesterday I was sent a deb collector agent who wanted to collect a debt that was not mine. Turns out they gave him the wrong data hahahaha. I have also been clearing a lot of debt that was actually mine this week, so now I am poor :(
Anyway, if you want to preserve your sanity, you should consider to stay away from Facebook for a while. I was there and it never did any good to me. It looks like many big web services are like that these days. The fun is in small niche services were you can find people who shares your own sort of mandess.
Too much of my social life (climbing partners, event invites) emanates directly from Facebook. I would genuinely feel somewhat lost without it.
I definitely see the downsides, though, and I'm no fan of Fuckerberg nor am I fan of what social media, more broadly is doing to society.
To preserve my sanity I need less alcohol, but that's a different story.
CitaThreadDrift is going to take me from the downsides of social media to the even worse attributes of the latest attempts to "fix" the problem by revoking CDA section 230 whole hog. Repugnant. Follow https://twitter.com/ENBrown for the best takes on that.
It is true that many groups of friends will ostrazise you if you don't use
their chosen comms platform. However, as I always say, if your friends are
not going to be your friends if you don't register to Facebook, Discord or
whatever the cool thing is this week, they are really shitty friends.
There's a (rock) climbing partners facebook group that's great for finding last minute partners. On those weekends where I actually feel like climbing (which are becoming fewer and fewer as I slide further into my 40s), it's a tool that I lean on pretty heavily.
I mean, I tend to maintain loose acquaintance-ships with a larger number of people than tight friendships with a few, in this regard. It's nice to be able to post "anybody up for Saturday?" and get a response from a rando (most of whom turn out to be decent people.)
It saves me the work of not being able to decide who to hit up. It saves me the work of not knowing where I stand with people. It's simpler and easier. But yeah, it's a little less "real" in some ways.
Sounds good. Not sure where you're located (in office-relative coordinate-space) these days, feel free to Mail>
You know, I thought Instant Messaging platforms had taken on that role.
At least nowadays people arround me is using Whatsapp and similar software to arrange meetings and for sorting out all those "is anybody free for...?" cases.

Oh, I'm on Whatsapp for something similar. But there is no such group that I know of for this particular community

oooooh, that's the whole "publisher vs. platform" thing, isn't it.
The big socials seem to want the best of both worlds. When they pick winners and losers using their "algorithms" they want to be a publisher. But when their necks are on the line because someone posted something illegal, they want to be a platform (or a common carrier). They can't be both.
Yes they can. That's the whole point of CDA 230. It provides blanket protection for internet companies.
This protection is critical for the continued survival of web publishers, platforms, whatever. Without it, internet companies would likely take down all posts as soon as there is a complaint, the effect would be completely chilling for free speech.
To be honest, many websites are already self-policing themselves so hard that
you cannot be yourself online anymore, except on darknet services or niche
services such as this one.
One thing I miss from the Usenet is that you could be an ass with your ass friends and nobody would complain unless you were actively disrupting the service. If you were too burdersome to read, people would just put you in their kill filters and move on.
