<p>Ironically the last song on the album the instrumental version of 'take your clothes off when you dance ( an evolutionary step for an older song of his ), has always been one of my favorites of his.. and now to learn he didn't play...  i don't even have the words..</p>

This shows through in how the Rust Evangelism Strike Force operates.

<p>In my university's philosophy class I learned about a philosopher named Berkeley whose perspective was that everything perceived to exist is actually a figment of God's imagination. It's a pity our textbook only described his perspective without including any writings because it's beginning to sound exceedingly accurate.</p>

<p>I believe they refer to that as quantum wave theory. Tho i tend to think matter is created from the intersection of the waves, in a multi-dimensional holographic diffraction sort of thing, so there really is no 'matter' to discover. its all an illusion.</p>

 First off: weird.

Second, it sort of gives credence to a thought that someone else and I arrived
at once over lunch. We were talking about how light doesn't have to accelerate,
it just comes out at the speed of light. I pointed out that it's similar to
how we think of waves through a fluid. We think of those waves propogating
with some speed, but they're generated by some kind of energy and they don't
accelerate; the "wave" (whether
acustic or water or whatever) is really a conceptual model for the compression
or expansion of matter as energy ripples out. And that's when "the thought"
happened: does the universe actually exist in some kind of meta medium that
hasn't been identified yet?

Today I Learned that in pre-Stoker culture, vampires were depicted as having
arithmomania, an obsessive need to count things. In some lore a vampire attack
could be thwarted by spilling something like seeds or rice grains on the ground,
and the vampire would prefer to count them instead of continuing the attack,
giving the victim time to escape.

Count von Count, from the old days of pre-pedo Sesame Street, was just a
happy coincidence. In western culture, the archetypal vampire is Bram Stoker's
"Dracula" -- also known as Count Dracula, which inspired Children's Television
Workshop to create a vampire obsessed with counting. But that's only a coincidence
-- they likely didn't know that outside of Stoker's work, vampires were *always*
obsessed with counting things.

Learn something new every day, or you die stupid, I always say.

TIL that TicketBastard no longer allows you to print your tickets. You must
have a smartphone and bring it to the theater because the bar code is ANIMATED.

It is amazing that these assholes still have no real competition.

Because it doesn't have a tail.

<p>Odd, i have had the exact opposite with my cats. Even my indoor cats who ware well fed and cared for, if they get to go out they bring home food to give us. Or if mice get in the house, its game on.</p>
<p>These days only certain ones go outside, if they will stay in the yard.  To risky to let them wander around here.  Just yesterday we were given a vole by one of the cats. Dropped it at the back door and walked in all proud. </p>

I had cats when I was young. They were all lazy fucks and would not hunt
if their lives depended on it. If you reduced their food ration they would
go to the next house and bother the neighbourhoods for treats rather than
hunt for mice.

 Welcome to my world.

I don't mind mice in the barns. I welcome every mice and bird to nest in
the barns. Horses love staring into newborn chicks to see what they are up
to. It is when they get in the house when they start causing trouble. I had
to repair some ugly damate to the electrical wiring of the house done by mice
last year.

There is not much advice I can give beyond the obvious one. Place anything
a mice would love to have as lunch in a secured place so mice don't have much
of a reason to walk in. Have garbage, dog food, horse food etc. stored in
containers. Then look for obvious infiltration
poins to your house and seal them, so you get less mice in.

I once got a shack which suffered a bad infestation flooded by carbon monoxide.
Not a solution I recommend.

I had a friend recommend me to keep a ferret at home. Mice are terrified
by them and won't get in a house where one is present. The issue is that ferrets
are every bit as destructive as a ravaging horde of mice, with the drawback
that a ferret is to be treated as a pet...

Sometimes we find them dead and dismantled thanks to the kitties, sometimes
we find them alive and running around.

We can't figure out whether they're getting in, or if the kitties are bringing
them in. Oh and last week there was a bird, that one had to have been escorted
inside by a feline member of the household.

The fact that they're coming in so frequently and are often alive suggests
that they are "getting in"

The fact that there are NO signs of mouse activity (scratching sounds inside
the walls, trails of poop, etc) suggests that they are "being brought in"

I just can't figure this out.

<p>Right, i didnt expect it to be a full 2x, but also never expected it to be such a slight difference.  10 pound really isn't much so didnt expect a discount like that. Now if i was getting a 50 or 100 filled up, there i would expect a discount for volume.</p>
<p>Got the 5 tank from Amazon as the only place in town i new about at the time wanted lots.. ( the 75 dollar refill...even Dicks was cheaper, but in 2 pound increments as they would not fill above a 2 pound tank ).  My fault for not doing actual research.</p>

Yeah, Maps emphasizes historical data when you're doing a "arrive by X" search,
but puts somewhat more emphasis on realtime data for a normal search.

<p>TIL... that COVID-19 is affecting Google Maps. Google Maps uses historical data to map the best routes for direction. With COVID-19 driving patterns have changed, no one is commuting, so the historical routes are inaccurate for mapping the best routes. I had always thought Google Maps used current real time data, but in fact it uses historical data as well.</p>

So I wonder if it's difficult to recognize when someone is being moderate,
or truly too far to the left or right, if you aren't a moderate yourself.

And then, to what degree can you know if you're moderate?

I feel like I'm moderate, mostly because I think both positions seem too
extreme.

A lot of you here have embraced the right's position, with maybe one or two
on the left (maybe... the lefties here seem more moderate, as far as I can
tell). I kinda feel you're a little extreme if you call for the death of
someone for disagreeing with your position, but that's just my opinion, man.

Digg 1 was marginally useful for a couple of years. It had a neat mix of
news, funny stuff, etc. As a nerd I remember trying it out for a while after
Slashdot became unreadable. I seem to recall abandoning it because there
was just too much volume.

This is my observation as well. Admittedly it is not an observation from
a neutral point of view, but I have a feeling it's a fairly objective truth.

Is it "built in" to the platform?

One explanation could be that, simply, this is an effect of an obtusely large
percentage of left-wingers operating the platform.

The other explanation could be that the left is far more likely to have mobs
of people filing Butthurt Reports on posts they don't like, so it's far more

Well, I have had my share of dealings with both libertarians, members of
different Libertarian parties and the like, and they are all prety much normal
people with normal lives and normal jobs.

Also, the ones in big parties usually have quite moderate programs. It is
usually the small parties that have uncompromissing programs, mostly because
when you are a small party you can only recruit new people by being ideologically
pure. It happens with parties from other ideologies, such as communists and
other authoritarians. Once
those grow a bit they start watering down in order to get votes, because they
don t need to stay ideologically pure to get new recurits.

They won't admit it, but they built
the site so right-wing trolls could have their own echo chamber. It is not
surprising to see it is full of such.

TBH there are already studies about which ideas get blocked in big social
media sites. I agree the really, really big providers don't administratively
enforce idea blocking openly. However, dogpiling is quite real and people
leaves those platforms because of that very often, and administrators don't
look like they are doing a great job with that. Still not as bad as medium-sized
services, such as the one I talked about earlier.

I am active at darknet places which are really everything goes affairs...
people is really way more open about themselves and you don't see much bad
behaviour despite the fact banning is quite not a thing. Btw most people there
feels more welcome at Jisko-like services
or irc2p than they do to Twitter. It is funny that people is more willing
to confess they have a self-steem problem because their Willy is too short
or whatever when they cannot be tracked back.

To be slightly more clearer, sometimes your life goes through some changes
(and/or, you just get older and start feeling more secure about certain things),
and your politics change.

Basically, at the moment, I'm politically homeless - the policies that really
matter to some of the people that I care about are political suicide for both
parties. And the libertarians (even though they're a stopped clock that gives
the right time twice a day) are finding the right answers.

In my late teens/early 20s I flirted with libertarianism. Abandoned it fairly
quickly because, well, this is who I am: center-left liberal guy. You don't
change who you are overnight.

After that, I was kinda judgy about certain lib issues (drug law in particular)
for a while (as Peter Pulse could tell you), but that's a different story.

Lately though I've been reading reason.com more than a little bit. Doesn't
mean I agree with everything they say; far from it. It does mean I find that
they're the only people who are intellectually honest in certain niche areas;
the only people who get certain things right, journalistically speaking. I
like what @enbrown is doing.

tl;dr: Kamala Harris is the antichrist. Any Dem candidate is preferable.

I voted LP for the first two decades of my adult life,
because I had no appetite for the BushClinton crowd. I suspect I was in very
good company, because the Nolan chart generally shows (or did at the time)
that most people are libertarians but either didn't know it or wouldn't admit
to it.

(That may not be the case now that Bernie bros and other assorted millenials
are on the scene. YMMV.)

I stopped voting LP when I came to the realization that the LP has nothing
to do with libertarian ideals. Poke the phrase "Gary Johnson is a complete
idiot" into your favorite search engine.

Today, the Libertarian Party people are basically just Democrats who also
want legalized drugs.

Understand, however, that no single policy exists in a vacuum. On one hand,
you want to achieve small wins when you can. On the other hand, "perfect
is the enemy
of the good", while usually true, brings up a few thoughts that I've had about
(pure) libertarianism in the past. For example, a pure libertarian would
want legalized drugs, fully open borders, and minimal taxation, right? But
what if you only implement the first two but don't fix the third? Now we're
paying (as our old buddy Gil used to say, "while having a gun pointed at us
by the government") for the care of drug addicts and non-taxpaying aliens.

(Trying to keep this discussion academic ... for those of you who are new
here, know that we try to keep the unlimited mudslinging to the Politics room.)

You've got some good points in here.

I don't think that would happen on Twitter, FWIW. Their rules simply don't
apply to cases like that. Posts have to more directly break the rules.

I'm also pretty disturbed by mob psychology and cancel culture but that's
another discussion.

This kinda reminds me of the debate surrounding Orson Scott Card. The dude
wrote some very inspiring books that taught compassion to teenagers while
remaining apolitical. That was his ethic - political viewpoints not appropriate
in fiction. Although he may have abandoned it more recently.

He's also completely tone-deaf at best, and a raging bigot at worst, on sexuality

I'm asking you to think this through very carefully.

Think about sites like 4chan, 8chan, and Gab, which are known for their free-wheeling,
anything-goes, nastiness. Ask who feels welcome on those sites: right-wing
trolls and right-wing trolls only, pretty much.

Contrast that with twitter, which has rules and has a decorum police. You
may not agree with the rules, but it's obviously a far more neutral platform
to the extent that the rules are enforced fairly and mechanically.

So I would argue that unfettered free speech is not the determiner of who
feels welcome. Quite the opposite.

...well, many people is leaving social media accounts because of trolls that
are on some lobby payroll, and administrators totally fail to prevent the

users out of the platform.
And yeah, you can say to screw sites that are so poorly administrated or
that allow such bad practices. And guess what, here I am :P

I don't believe that's true, really. No, Twitter is not as unfettered as
Gab. But it has a fairly consistent set of rules, reflecting things like incitement
to violence.

You may not agree with those rules, and I'm sure the one about harrassment
based on gender orientation would be unpopular among a certain type of paleoconservative
troglodyte, but honestly, who gives a fuck? These rules are mostly about decorum,
and if you can't figure out how to express a conservative viewpoint with decency
and erudition, you probably aren't worth listening to.

As many users here are aware, I'm an outspoken centre-left member of this
BBS filled with mostly libertarians. I've also been a mostly-lurker on Twitter
for the past couple of years. I find that the rules largely cut both ways.
If there's somebody who's a far-right asshole/twat, I just ignore them and
move on. So some of y'all might
be surprised to learn that the only person I've ever reported to the Twitter
policy team was actually a left-wing, if not anarcho-left, rad-fem, who was
making a lot of violent comments. I wasn't the only person who was reporting
her, and her posts demonstrated a consistent pattern, and she kept coming
back from temporary bans, so we got her first account perma-banned.

Predictably, she screamed about some alleged dual standard. "I got perma-banned
and yet there's all these Nazis on twitter." That sort of thing. She was wrong
in that she got banned because she crossed a line. She was not wrong in that
it's not hard to be a Nazi on twitter. It's fairly easy to do that: all you
have to do is tone it down slightly. If all else fails, there is a tool that
we all have, that we can use. That tool is commonly referred to as a dog-whistle.

Yes they can. That's the whole point of CDA 230. It provides blanket protection
for internet companies.
This protection is critical for the continued survival of web publishers,
platforms, whatever. Without it, internet companies would likely take down
all posts as soon as there is a complaint, the effect would be completely
chilling for free speech.

oooooh, that's the whole "publisher vs. platform" thing, isn't it.

The big socials seem to want the best of both worlds. When they pick winners
and losers using their "algorithms" they want to be a publisher. But when
their necks are on the line because someone posted something illegal, they
want to be a platform (or a common carrier). They can't be both.

There's a (rock) climbing partners facebook group that's great for finding
last minute partners. On those weekends where I actually feel like climbing
(which are becoming fewer and fewer as I slide further into my 40s), it's
a tool that I lean on pretty heavily.

I mean, I tend to maintain loose acquaintance-ships with a larger number
of people than tight friendships with a few, in this regard. It's nice to
be able to post "anybody up for Saturday?" and get a response from a rando
(most of whom turn out to be decent people.)

It saves me the work of not being able to decide who to hit up. It saves
me the work of not knowing where I stand with people. It's simpler and easier.
But yeah, it's a little less "real" in some ways.

I definitely see the downsides, though, and I'm no fan of Fuckerberg nor

To preserve my sanity I need less alcohol, but that's a different story.

Sorry to hear you are having a rotten week. I have some Quarter Horse bourbon
somewhere at home, I wish I could send you some over telnet.
Yesterday I was sent a deb collector agent who wanted to collect a debt that
was not mine. Turns out they gave him the wrong data hahahaha. I have also
been clearing a lot of debt that was actually mine this week, so now I am
poor :(
Anyway, if you want to preserve your sanity, you should consider to stay
away from Facebook for a while. I was there and
it never did any good to me. It looks like many big web services are like
that these days. The fun is in small niche services were you can find people
who shares your own sort of mandess.

<p>The Rockettes are all employed as contractors, and there are more of them under contract than are required for a show.  The noise from a couple of years ago was from a couple of individual performers who didn't want to work the inauguration; they made a stink about it and the media amplified it ... a lot, as they tend to do.</p>
<p>My colleague who is a former Rockette had moved on some number of years before that happened.  When I asked her about it she just shrugged and said something to the effect of "it's just another show".</p>

Shaking someone's hand isn't exactly the same as participating in a performance
for someone's behalf.

And, sure, professionally, if I were part of an organization that does performances,
I would hunker down and just do what the group does, without regard for whether
or not I agree with the situation. Because, y'know, I'd be a professional.
I might grouse about it, but I'd still try to do as good a job as possible.

So, to me, the weird bit was the bit where management said there wasn't pressure,
but individuals within the Rockettes indicated otherwise. There's something
goofy going on there. I don't know if the management was attempting some
weird form of damage control (to their brand's popularity), and figured the
press would distort things if they tried to go down the 'we're professionals'
tact so they lied instead, or if there's something incredibly smarmy going
on there.

I'm guessing it's smarm. Because, well, there's a tremendous amount of smarm
in the entertainment industry.

I recall reading an article concerning the Rocketts and their participation
in some gig with the White House after Trump's election. The brouhaha had
to do with some of them not really wanting to associate themselves with Trump,
but feeling they had little choice in the matter, while management saying
there was no pressure to participate. The message seemed disconnected, and
it seemed disconcerting that the folks who didn't want to do the Trump gig
didn't feel comfortable saying so in a way that made their identity known.

Yeah ... it was a Roman Catholic thing. One of their many "proprietary extensions"
to Christianity, with no scriptural grounding whatsoever. In the Catholic
church they invented another BBQ called "purgatory" where the recently deceased
receive "temporal punishment" for unforgiven sins. Corrupt church officials
decided to SELL "indulgences" to either erase the customer's guilt or give
them a fully-paid-up green light to *indulge* in some unsavory behavior.

Just so many layers of made-up doctrine stacked upon each other.

The Bible says nothing about indulgences or purgatory, and makes it clear
that salvation is by grace,
not by works (which means you either have it or you don't, and there's no
"time out corner" in between). As the_mgt pointed out, things were going
so far off course that it moved Martin Luther to speak out against these practices,
which led to the Reformation.

<p>In the catholic church, there were some people traveling around the land, selling so called "Ablassbriefe", <em style="color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">litterae indulgentiales.</em></p>
<p>So basically, it is a "get out of hell/limbo earlier" card, you pay a certain amount and you spent a few days less on the BBQ. The catholic church used them heavily to cash in money for building the St. Peter Basilica. Luther was not amused.</p>

<p>Today I learned about Martin Luther and the 95 Thesis because my son has a report on it. Very interesting. He was against selling indulgences.  What did "indulgence" mean then because it doesn't really make sense if it means what I understand the word to mean today. </p>

<p>Today I learned how to say "sister-in-law" in sign language. I'm trying to slowly pick up some sign language because my sister-in-law is going deaf. She and my brother and their little girl are all learning it, but they live in Binghampton and I don't hardly get to ever see them. So I don't have any easy way to practice, but I am trying to learn it anyway, from youtube and a book and an app. </p>

<p>Today I learned that gardening/planting season is so over. You can't buy any plants by Walmart anymore, unless it's an indoor kind of plant, and it comes with sparkly decorations on it.  </p>
<p> </p>
<p>...If I buy one and plant it outdoors, can I get an actual living tree out of the deal? They are really cheap. If I went to buy a tree from a nursery, it would cost tons, no doubt.  These trees being sold now remind me of feeder goldfish. Really cheap, and probably not expected to live long.  But sometimes those fish can really surprise you with a long life span.  Also, my landscaping is missing a tree. </p>

<p>I am sure you have seen both types. I thought it was each bakery had their own way of making them, I didn't know that each style had a name.  Hot dog buns have more of a round or curved shape and are are sliced from the side.  They look more like a sub roll.  Frankfurter buns have a more squared off shape and open from the top, have more of a pocket and are more expensive.</p>

Because I'm doing a lot of integration work right now I'm hearing it a lot

Turns out it's more or less official industry terminology.
