I guess I'm moving kind of slow on the ASL learning, but I don't have anyone nearby to practice with, so the fact that I'm still trying every day to practice or learn a bit is not bad.

Today I learned about Martin Luther and the 95 Thesis because my son has a report on it. Very interesting. He was against selling indulgences. What did "indulgence" mean then because it doesn't really make sense if it means what I understand the word to mean today.
In the catholic church, there were some people traveling around the land, selling so called "Ablassbriefe", litterae indulgentiales.
So basically, it is a "get out of hell/limbo earlier" card, you pay a certain amount and you spent a few days less on the BBQ. The catholic church used them heavily to cash in money for building the St. Peter Basilica. Luther was not amused.
Today I learned about "cis", Short for "cisgender" (opposite of "transgender"), used to describe someone whose gender identity matches their anatomical gender at birth.
It is shit like this that got Trump elected.

Yeah ... it was a Roman Catholic thing. One of their many "proprietary extensions" to Christianity, with no scriptural grounding whatsoever. In the Catholic church they invented another BBQ called "purgatory" where the recently deceased receive "temporal punishment" for unforgiven sins. Corrupt church officials decided to SELL "indulgences" to either erase the customer's guilt or give them a fully-paid-up green light to *indulge* in some unsavory behavior.
Just so many layers of made-up doctrine stacked upon each other.
The Bible says nothing about indulgences or purgatory, and makes it clear that salvation is by grace, not by works (which means you either have it or you don't, and there's no "time out corner" in between). As the_mgt pointed out, things were going so far off course that it moved Martin Luther to speak out against these practices, which led to the Reformation.
There is this story that they even sold those letters for sins committed in the future. Legend has it, that one guy bought such a letter, killed the seller and ran of with the money. One hell of an exploit!
TIL that the house in the famous painting "American Gothic" is a real house, it's still standing, and it's operated by a historical society that not only allows people to pose for photographs that mimic the painting, but also provides costumes and props to assist you in doing so.
