I do care about the planet. That's why I recycle, watch my energy consumption, try to minimize solid waste, and am a proponent of sustainable nuclear energy.

I always forget the guy's name - but it was actually a fairly conservative guy who predicted widespread famine and social collapse by the 1800's in 1789 or so. I think it is the Mattheson prediction. But, they've been selling this for a LONG time, and their models never accurately account for technological advances. One day, the crash will come before technology can solve the issue, and they'll go, "We told you so!"

It is predicted that Asteroid Apophis will strike Earth! This is exciting but very disappointing, it won't happen until 2068 and I will be long gone by then.

Good.  Nothing wrong with a good extinction every few million years is what I always say.  I am hoping it hits Yellowstone National Park directly for maximum total destruction.

Astrophysicists are saying it is too early to tell, others are saying it will be close.

Al Gore is already blaming it on global warming, and 2068 is an election year, the democrats are placing blame on Republicans trying to suppress black voter turnout.

Or whatver nuclear plant is located closest to a major Pacific Rim fault line... oh wait, that's already happened.

No. I want it to land DIRECTLY ON ME. Get me off this damn rock.

Living in a post apocalyptic wasteland would be terrible misery for almost everyone.

But for some people, it will be utopia. Possibly a short lived one, but utopia while it lasts, none the less.

Now I'm disappointed. I wanted to see the planet break into pieces, but all that happened was that everyone died.

I want to see the earth explode like planets do in science fiction.

The lockdowns and reduced societal activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic affected emissions of pollutants in ways that slightly warmed the planet for several months last year, according to a new study by the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Solution? Nature is working on it.

Here is another truth revealed by this:

There *ARE* too many of us. The Left is already making arguments that Covid is racist - that it affects brown people more severely than white people. This is true, too.

And that is because of r/k selection - as unpopular as that theory is with its "eugenics" type feel.

The most populous portions of global society are the POOREST populations. They're overwhelmingly brown. That is why they're the most populous. They breed in larger numbers to overcome the challenges of a sustainable population faced by those who are resource starved.

(Things we all know, that are evident, but normal people act like they don't realize.)

Bringing poor brown people up to the economic security of wealthier white people wouldn't help. We're simply trying to game the system to beat one of its checks and balances - in this case, against a species over-populating.

Democrats know this, by the way - and it is part of the reason they are so *strongly* pro-Abortion.

Nature is trying to thin our herd - and it is looking for the heaviest concentration of the herd - the lowest hanging fruit, to achieve that goal.

Just like it works in the rest of nature.

Found elsewhere, passed along:

"Dryer lint and/or cotton balls + Vaseline and a decent flint striker and you got yourself easy fire starters. Just a slather of Vaseline on the lint or cotton ball and strike the flint and it lights almost immediately and provides a decent 30 second burn for kindling. You don't need to be a Bear Grylls type to use a flint and steel. Literally just keep striking the two together and the sparks will ignite the petroleum jelly. Done it many, many times in pretty strong wind.

"Also long term storage. I keep that setup, a can filled with pea-size gravel, and about 20 tea candles. Light the votive candle, place in the bucket and it provides a small but consistent heat for cars when you're immobilized."

Cool. I use dryer lint by itself as tinder for starting fires in my burn barrel. P-jelly would probably be even more fun to play around with. Of course, if you have a blowtorch handy, it might not be necessary :)

My wife takes dryer lint, jams it into a used toilet paper tube, and drips the remains of candle wax onto each end, saturating the lint as far as possible.

They make awesome campfire starters, and smell like a pleasant combination of fabric softener, scented toilet paper, and luxury candle.

I like that idea. Lint is awesome when I'm just walking it a few hundred feet from the dryer to the burn barrel, but the "firestarter tube" sounds a lot more portable, storable, and convenient.

My burn barrel has a 4" hole in the side, at the bottom, with a flexible metallic dryer vent hose on it. At the cool end of the hose I have a small blower fan attached to it, to bring fresh air into the fire. It works pretty well. Lots of fresh air in the fire means less smoke. I've also used a leaf blower, and the results are absolutely phenomenal, but it shot a lot of hot ashes into the air, a lot of which landed on the neighbors' cars (the nice neighbors, not the douchebags on the other side).

I also want to know why car batteries die when you store them on a concrete floor.

Snopes says that this is not true, therefore it is true. Also, I had a fairly new and fully charged battery go completely flat after just a few days on the floor of my garage.

I dont know why for sure, but it does. It also damages the floor if you charge it on the floor.. ( too lazy to a piece of wood out once, stained the floor for a couple off years )

I suspect it has to do with induced eddy currents due to water in the concrete and steel screen under it

Just a follow up on this: the battery in question was fairly new and fully charged when I placed it on the garage floor back in August for a couple of days while I replaced the engine in my lawnmower (a low end Deere riding mower with a 19 HP single cylinder engine). When I got to putting the battery back on board, it was dead -- and I don't mean "mostly dead", I mean like less than a volt.

After an overnight charge, this same battery started the engine on the first try and went strong for the rest of the season (which is now coming to a close, but I bet when I turn the key in the spring it'll start right up).

And yet Snopes, that "arbiter of truth" so well loved by people who peddle lies, says that it is absolutely and completely false that putting a battery on a concrete floor causes it to go flat. Just goes to show you ... we already knew that Snopes will take sides in controversial issues, but now we know they can't really be counted on for scientific things either.
