Diversity target? They got to tick off two boxes: Excessive perspirers and Fencers quotas.

If Star Trek was made today Kirk would fall in love with a gender neutral alien and every time the Klingons attacked the Enterprise there would be someone saying "Not all Klingons are violent."

....Scotty wouldn't be allowed to say, "Cap'n she can't take any more!"

I think Shatner is becoming Kirk in his old age.

I wish George Takei would become Sulu in his old age. He's turned into such an asshole.

Chromecasts on every TV? What on earth for?

Mainly as an inexpensive way to turn every TV into a YouTube player. Actually the TV in our living room has it built in. It integrates well with Android phones, which we all have. Also it's easy to screencast from Chrome, which we use in the home theater to play Jackbox party games.

That's kind of the point. Once you're invested in Google's ecosystem or Apple's ecosystem or Amazon's ecosystem or Microsoft's ecosystem, you tend to stick with it to preserve your existing investment. Obviously if your vendor makes themselves enough of a nuisance, you can switch, but normally there's no point in doing so.

Yes, it would be great if everyone built stuff that worked with everyone else's stuff. Go ask Stallman to get right on that.

Hmm... I have a Google Home (something Girthta bought me for Christmas), and have not heard it advertise anything yet.

But then, I haven't really got into it. I might ask it the weather, but little more. If I ever move back into my condominium again, I'll use it a bit more and see if it tries to advertise crap to me.

The Chromecast / screencast is my issue. Why have yet another device involved?
It's just an annoyance more than anything else.

As opposed to what? Plugging a computer directly into the television? Having it on the network is *way* more convenient than stringing up a cable every time you want to watch something.

Chromecast is inexpensive, integrates seamlessly with our Android devices and Chrome browsers, and "just works." If we were an Apple or Amazon or Microsoft household we would buy their TV adapters, but we are a Google household so Chromecast works great for us.

It's not about "better" -- they all work about the same and all four companies are demonstrably 100HE(tm).

The older Chromecast did NOTHING but stream from another device. Who wants to jump between devices like that to play?

YouTube plays on pretty much everything these days anyway. It's about convenience.
The Chromecast seems more inconvenient than pretty much everyone elses device.

If I had to rank them I'd say:

AppleTV (best interface)
Roku (most content)
Amazon (they're even more locked down than Apple to their environment)
Chromecase (original) - because it's basically a wireless HDMI adapter

I'll have to try out the new Chromecast one day to see if it's any better.

What you're describing is Miracast, not Chromecast. Chromecast has the ability to stream from another device, but most apps run directly on the ChromeCast itself. Obviously if you are mirroring your laptop screen that's going to be a direct connection. But if you are playing YouTube or Netflix or an app that plays content off your DLNA server or any of a thousand other things, the ChromeCast establishes a connection directly to the content and is responsible for playing it.

Your other device, such as your phone or computer, is not in the media path.
The other device is, by design, the controller. I think that's pretty good; who wants to keep yet another remote lying around? Once a stream is playing you can disconnect or turn off the phone/tablet/laptop or whatever, and the media keeps playing.

Fine A. Lee.  Google maps now shares location on Maps and not Google Plus!

Scott Adams will not be happy. Google just totally obliterated any need for people to use his "WhenHub" app.

Google had location information before (Latitude), it is currently available in G+. Other apps offer the ability to share location information. Google finally moved it from G+ where it doesn't belong to maps where it does belong.  A map feature, now in maps!  Now I can get rid of G+

The location sharing finally appeared on my google maps in both the desktop and mobile.  One feature I like is the ability to add location sharing with Maps directions, you can have google maps provide directions and share your location and ETA with someone.  Once you arrive at your destination location sharing turns off.

Because you are smart enough to raise the question: "Better for whom?"
