Fri Jul 05 2024 21:16:24 EDT from zelgomerWell this room has been quite a ride. Now if you'll all excuse me, I will be spending my Friday evening enjoying some lucious "free speech."
Back in 1940, while the Hitler/Stalin alliance was still flourishing, Dalton Trumbo wrote an anti-war play to encourage the US to stay out of WWII. Once the alliance was broken, and the “Help!” signal went out from Moscow, Trumbo stopped printing the play and did everything he could to get the existing copies pulped. A few years later, a couple of anti-war protesters who didn’t know the story behind this wrote to Trumbo to ask where they could find a copy of the play. His response to these people who just wanted to read his words and express their beliefs? He reported them to the FBI as likely Nazi sympathizers.
Now, to be fair, Trumbo did later say that he regretted this, but also to be fair, reading his rationale makes it sound like he regrets it less because he realized that persecuting people for wanting a play was wrong and more because it drew the FBI’s attention to him. After all, the feds seemed less interesting in arresting these alleged Nazis than they did in why Trumbo would have written this play and then almost immediately done everything possible to suppress it. If the FBI would have just tossed those two guys in the gulag, he’d have been fine with that.

Not sure what i said would imply that. But to be clear, i do think
we were far more free in the beginning, and slowly over the
generations that has been eroded, for a variety of reasons and a
number ways. Was it ever perfect? No, of course not, and there were
things that needed fixing. Nothing ever is perfect, but restricting
freedoms based on some stupid opinion is never the answer. More
freedom, for everyone, is always the answer.
Not surprised tho about the mushroom comment. Figured you were
against that too. Um, am I even allowed to discuss psychedelic drugs,
or is that also banned speech in your world, since im sure it
violates your concept of offensive?

I was about to say "I guess early 20th Century America was fine, as long as you ignored the prohibition."

No, you are a Democrat pretending to be a Republican.
You are very bad at trolling. Try better next time. We are veteran Internet settlers.
And other restrictions, such as on the 2A... Can we say NFA anyone? Oh and the racist bias in things like the NFA. And a host of others.... Expansion of executive branch powers.. Oppressive "police actions" ( ie freaking wars ) bla bla bla
"fine" is all about which side you were on at any given moment in time. But few people who think they are better than others realize this.

It has become obvious to me that Nurb is not a conservative; he is a disenchanted liberal.

Seriously, does he sound like a conservative in here at all? No.

Wont get into it again with you, but i will say that i follow no label.
But if i was *forced* to, due to some oncoming purge or something of 'undecideds' i would fall more into the libertarian camp than the other 2 modern ones. Or, id support a total benevolent dictatorship, as long as i was the dictator.
Rose colored glasses.
Tue Jul 16 2024 21:26:32 EDT from SouthernComputerGeekI see you are all still boiling.
So, according to your world view, a person is not free to only agree with some things another person states/believes/whatever. It has to be absolute and you must get your boots on and fall in line 100% or go home.
gotcha.
Tue Jul 16 2024 21:29:09 EDT from SouthernComputerGeekNurb has the audacity to quote Reagan, but the two are polar opposites on social issues.
"Why are you so mad?" The troll cries out in pain as he strikes you.
Come back when you're willing to substantively engage with any of my points.
>Seriously, does he sound like a conservative in here at all? No.
"Forsooth!", the Buckleyite controlled opposition cry. "How can one possibly vote for the vulgarian who is NOT EVEN -- gasp! -- a REAL CONSERVATIVE!?"
Fag.
LoL drove past a rather classic 'purveyor of free speech' this morning. Didn't know they were still in business. Appears to still be a bookstore and 'dance club/bar' and 'vip rooms'.
Used to go bookstore there in the mid-80s as they were the only place on the south side of town that sold 'high times' magazine. Never did go into the bar/club area, wasn't interested. ( tho, even if i was interested, i was 19 or so and bars require 21 here )
The next closest was clear on the far east side of town, at a record/smoke shop and too far to drive just for a magazine. Now if i was buying vinyl or band posters or something, it was the place to go in the area. I guess after that market collapsed due to the internet, they moved, downsized and just became a head-shop, ironically across the street from an "adult supply" store.
I realized over thirty years ago that most people screeching about "freedom" were only interested in the freedom to suck cock, smoke crack, and pierce the body part of their choice.
But not everyone is like that. I support their right to do it, even if i wouldn't be interest in it myself.
"i may not agree with what you say, but i will fight for your right to say it"

Nothing is absolute in the world. When its about groups of people...
Sun Jul 21 2024 12:46:36 EDT from nonservator"Not all X are like that" doesn't help me or the opposing case.
