During the early part of the 19th Century, through to the end of the so-called "Indian Wars" later in that same century, the United States engaged in an almost-complete eradication of the Indians (excuse me, "Native Americans") and their varied indigenous cultures that had thrived here for centuries.
First it was the forced relocation of the Cherokees from North Carolina to a reservation somewhere in what today is Oklahoma. This came to be known as the Trail of Tears. Not all the North Carolina Cherokees went. Some hid and then re-emerged to claim their homes and land. Today they are called the "Eastern Band of Cherokees" and are doing quite well in the western part of North Carolina, their centuries-long ancestral homeland.
The "runup" to the Civil War intervened; but shortly therefter...
...came the Plains War and the eradication of the North American Indian's "horse culture", and then...
The Indian Wars - fought in what most today call the Old West.
That gave the Cavalry "something to do" now that the War Between the States had ended...
So, folks, when it comes to Crimes Against Humanity, and when it comes to Genocide, we in America should condemn OURSELVES for what we once did.
As Jesus Christ once said: Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
You don't need to go that far back to find some dirt on America's hands.

and sometimes war is just a way to make money, and give people s.th. to do.
Similar in germany: after WW1 many soldiers were thrown out of the army because of the maximum number of troops was limited.
What should they do? they didn't learn anything... this was one of the biggest root causes for the following Hitler regime and WW2.
I guess the mentioned US Kavelery situation was similar - but no political force told them to become civillian, instead they gave them something to do.
Many think that bombing belgrad back to stoneage had similar causes: weapons had to be used up.

Hamas is using the ongoing war to continue taking foreign aid and subjugating their people. Had they spent 1/2 of the money they spent on tunnel-digging to improve their medical and education infrastructure, life would be way better in Gaza.
Israel mostly wants to stop the rockets and terrorist attacks.
Would prefer that everyone just quit with the stones and worried about their own crap instead of trying to destroy other people/cultures/religions/whatever....
would be so good. Look at Egypt and Jordan. They decided to stop bugging Israel and fix themselves, and their people are living much better than they were...
