My Surface Pro 4 and 5 have great all day battery life... or did, when new.
Maybe this is more a Windows on Mac thing than a Windows thing - and maybe Apple is more of the problem than Microsoft.

New macbook. Will run all freaking day on OSX or Linux, even in a VM. Add a windows VM to the mix and battery lasts about 4 hours. CPU pegged the entire time due to the windows VM, due to security scans and crap.
I sort of wondered how long it would run, forgot to plug the power into the usb hub this morning. So around 10 am i found out :)
Its technically a VM on Linux.. so really its just a generic Intel box as far as windows knows. Had same problem with VM on my generic Intel box too. So do other people, on metal.
We are also burning up SSD in the HP's like ice cream on a hot sidewalk. 30% fail rate in a year.
While i would like to blame apple, i have to be honest, its not their fault. its our security team.

Yeah... this kind of behavior is not typical. All of my Win machines are SSD... and they're on constantly... *knock on wood*.

Joking aside, its just insane what they are doing to our machines. If it wasn't for the couple of pieces of software i need on windows, id not be using it at all. I guess one i could get published via VDI if i bitched enough, but id never get crystal installed on a shared server.

Group Policy is the absolute fsckin' worst. I mean, it is granular, powerful, and simply takes all of the complexity of *nix and wraps it up in an even *more* confusing Graphical User Interface. It is the point where as a Windows admin I went, "I'm an old dog... I'm not learning this one. Fuck the masters..."

Looks like all our contractors are going to end up getting VDI. Seems we are having to sue people to get hardware back.. Which of course costs time and money, on our part.
came out of a discussion where apparently with 'shared pools' where VMs are spun/up down on demand ( with random names each time ), SCCM is being installed, so it reports back as an asset in the data feed into my system. ( but not all people are on shared, and some get dedicated VMs.. making it even more of a mess to track )
GPO itself isn't the problem but if ours applies, you get all the
crap we push..
Yeah. That's why I don't bother to troubleshoot problems on my own machine anymore. I just whine at the IT department like a clueless n00b and tell them to fix their shit. I can't be bothered.
This is why I *want* a VDI. Let someone else deal with it end-to-end. As long as it has even *reasonable* performance I'm ok with it. I'm not doing anything high performance. I'm an IT Architect. The most display-hungry program I run is Visio. The most CPU-hungry program I run is the antivirus.
When I do development work it's on a remote server anyway. Give me the VDI.
No department can have their own developer doing internal work for your own applications. You also can not do any amateur work to get your job done. You must contract with the blessed development team as a formal project. wtf.

odd. I got a bright pretty 'security check failed' message the first time i tried to post that above.

wasn't here this week and the boss had to do the billing himself.
Boss calls me in order to tell him how the thing works. He tells me he wants
to get the order code for some service which as an issue ticket to be solved.
This sort of service does no use order codes (as per customer request) so I
give him an internal reference we use to locate the order info, which comes
without an standard order code. So he opens up the order file and starts
messing around looking for the non-existent order code.
Eventually he hits "Bill Customer for this Order" and a message pops up. "Are
you sure you want to bill this customer?" So he hits "Yes".
"Why doesn't the order code show up when I hit that button?" he asks.
"Because you just billed that customer," I explain.
"I don't think so!" he replies.
Ok, so the guy hit "Bill Customer for this Order" and says he didn't bill the customer for the order.
Fucking awesome.
I had to print the list of bills of the day in order to convince him he had just billed the customer (for an order with an opened issue).
Good times.
reminds me of the story i have told so many times:
Met new CFO ( i was on leave when he was hired ) . "hey, IT guy, how do i change the color of the text in this cell" I thought he was joking at first. "lol, funny guy we got here" Um, no, the CFO, who LIVES in excel does not know how to change a font.... "we are screwed". Now dont get me wrong, i dont expect everyone to be experts with computer stuff ( especially 20+ years ago ) but that is HIS JOB...
5 minutes later i had to tell him to shut up when he yelled at our receptionist and made her cry. Wanted to punch the guy right there. It went down hill from there. I was gone in under 6 months, from the only place i liked being at. .
And yes. we were screwed. Over about year period he destroyed the company and moved on just before they filed bankruptcy. "i saved x dollars"

I guess that's the kind of user for whom "IT guys" are hired.
I work in a technology company, and I try really hard not to make use of our IT department -- mainly because most of them are capable of helping the kind of users who need help changing the color of the text in a spreadsheet cell. Unfortunately there are times when I need support because they have access to things I don't ... and they're almost always unable to help me.
As far as 'local help' Put in a ticket a week ago due to them taking down another PDC and not putting in a CMR. i was broke. "i see x PDC is down, what should i be using now" was basically all it said. However, THIS time they put a CMR in the next day ( last time they never did.. ) and it mentioned what was being prompted so i fixed my app and moved on with my day. BUT i left the ticket open, just curious how long it took them to respond to a simple 20 second question, that was effecting production ( as far as they knew )
Last night, nearly a week later, i get a response, basically saying i'm stupid for doing it this way and that its wrong with a bunch of unnecessary fancy words to make him look smart. Really wtf THAT is how you treat your customers?. freaking child.. i was doing his job when he was still in grade school learning how to count past 5. Its a good thing i was home, id have gone over to tell him to fuck off.
Went on a rather long explanation of why we do it, and what the advantage is, and no, we dont have a choice anyway. No word back from Mr Smarty Pants.
