Nope, I live in the embedded space. I can barely even drive Windows anymore, I've been using Linux exclusively for so long. But I do work with some fellow "embedded software developers" who have absolutely no clue what a mutex is or how to use one. Worse, they think they do. I've asked my manager before if we could ban some individuals from ever checking in code that contains a pthread_create(). Sadly that didn't take.
Assuming you are not kidding. Its a convention for network shares: "Universal Naming Convention" It gets you out of stupid drive letters

Thu Jun 02 2022 02:18:50 PM EDT from LadySerenaKittyI drive FreeBSD. All my dev stuffs is on FreeBSD. WTF is a UNC path?
So one of my tasks is creating KPI reports for the org. ( mostly automated.. but i still manage the thing ) One thing we include is up-time of applications. To date, no one has figured out how to automate collection from Mainframe apps, so they give them to us manually.
This month the manager that gives us that data: " i dont know why we are reporting on this, it isn't our app and we dont even know what it is" ( slightly paraphrased ).. wtf.. you have been giving me data.
Freaking liars.
Email from the president of my vendor for the software i support "do you have 10 minutes later today to bring you up to speed on some exciting news?"
Ya, they sold out.
Strange thing is they sold out to a 'holdings company' who does nothing other tan buy smallish software companies. They provide no products of value of their own. They have at least 40 holdings in various industries, but all software related.. And that company is owned by parent 'shell'.. Who owns 6 companies, who sole purpose is also to buy others.. Between the 6 there must be 1000 entities..
The top parent company and the 6 subsidiaries web info is mostly "how can we buy you" "we never sell what we buy, come join us" ( oh and their web pages SUCK )
Seems like a pyramid scheme to me.
"you now have 3 weeks to complete xyz for HR" "um, months ago we were told it was optional" "no, its mandatory, you have 3 weeks left... "
grrrr
