All I know is that I wrote Stairway to Heaven years before I was born, and I still have yet to see a single royalty check.

Damn.

These are this week's Top 100 songs, according to Billboard. I don't recognize a single one of them, nor do I recognize most of the "artists" associated with them.

I used to wonder whether music was getting worse or if that perception is just the natural effect of getting older. You know what? I no longer care.
This "music" is garbage. All of it.

I think it's actually getting worse.

It is funny, I actually read a damn good theory about it.

See, recording music albums is not really profitable anymore, with some exceptions. In the old days, you could afford to hire a whole orchestra in order to record your Power Metal thematic album, with a booklet telling you a complex story, opera pros, you name it. You spent six figures in making the damn album, and it fucking showed.

Now it is hard to sell CDs, so disco houses won't allow your power metal band to spend more than 35k recording. No more orchestras, no more weeks trying to record the same track until it is fucking perfect and it makes the audience fall on their knees, tearing their clothes appart at the tragic music they are listening to. So you end up recording something that is cheap to produce, it is catchy enough to sell, and it is unvariably something you put in the background but don't pay much attention to. Because it is not really good enough to be worthy of much respect.

Interesting thoughts. I've believed for a while now that the 1996 regulatory change consolidated radio stations into the hands of so few companies that mainstream music is now manufactured rather than created.

I think it has been that way for a while. At the very least, I have heard that many groups from the 90s were "designer bands". Which means, some marketing expert assembled the band and created their image. Some of those bands are quite ok actually, but the point of those bands is to sell :-)

Then there are the weirdos like Turilli, producing albums at a loss from their own pocket because they can afford it and because they have the mission of making music that is fucking epicawesome.

It's true, but it didn't start in the 1990s. It started no later than the 1960s, with producers such as Phil Spector putting together dozens of recording groups by assembling people who were "not a band" and often didn't write their own material. Another great example would be The Monkees, who were a made-for-TV band that continued recording after the TV show was canceled. This was a common practice.

Name a song that you absolutely hate hearing but the rest of the world seems to think it is a wonderful song.

For me:

Paradise By The Dashboard Lights
I heard The Fixx, One Thing Leads To Another the other day and I don't know how anybody can listen to that.

"Here comes the Rooster" song, I don't know who performs it, it is an awful song that seems to get a lot of airplay.

I don't listen to the radio all that much, I have become old and think music ain't got that soul like the old time rock and or roll.  A few years ago I was with some friends at the local pub, someone played "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. They didn't play it once... they played it over and over, non-stop for at least a half hour.  No other song played. The song is bad enough, to hear it non-stop was agonizing.  I found the name of the band at a later time, and that has to be one of the worst band names I think I have ever heard... but I will hate everything about this band because I heard that song for at least a half-hour straight.

When I heard that the band was going to be at Woodstock 50 I was hoping for the demise of Woodstock 50.  It is a shame they still got paid even though the event was canceled.

John Lydon a.k.a. Johnny Rotten has put on a lot of weight.

I was shocked to see him like this.  If you are interested, image search his name.

I was not a real fan of Eddie, but I appreciate some of the things he did.

Didn't he do the riffts in "Beat It" for Michael Jackson? I love that one
