I have never liked the original version musically, but the lyrics did hit home, and its timing was pretty good too.  The version that The Pretenders did, is one of my favorite standalone songs.  ( ii like scarling's version too, tho its radically different )

Ya, most of what i listen to has always been female-led, borderline alternative, so it makes sense id try to create similar stuff. ( why create what i don't like? ) Never meant to imply my taste was way out in left field, its just not mainstream, and often missed by people who stick with 'commercial radio'  ( apparent by my 'sample lists' )  That said, not all of it was "punkish", some of the albums are instrumentals, post rock and maid-core leaning, as well as some 'regular' gothic leaning rock ( again, mostly female led. ) if you only sampled 'the girls' ones, try a couple of the others, the style will change. 

if you meant my suggestion to "try it yourself with AI" was my "2nd",  if its too much to figure out, that is cool, i tried to make it more approachable to people with the interfaces i wrote so thought it might be an option if you felt like it.

Another thought.  If you wanted to dabble.. 

I know i mentioned it before, but i did post a simple interface to the cpp-ized version of acestep.  I know you have the hardware so it dont matter ( i do too ), but aside from the advantage of reduction in GPU ram needed is a lot faster.  The dude has done a lot of work on his web interface that didn't exist at first, but i still mostly use mine as its far simpler than his ( tho his is a a lot simpler than the stock one for the full engine ), and does 99% of what i want.  Instead of endless options, just a couple. 

I also did one for stable-diffusion.cpp   Same concept, they took the 'regular' stuff and converted to cpp to make it more efficient. That makes pictures and ( limited ) videos.   Same thing here, a couple of 3rd party interfaces, but mine is simple without the tons and tons of possible options in your face. ( even if you want to add new models while not supported inside the GUI, its just a quick edit. i tried to format the thing to make that easy to do. I dont change models often so didnt muck up the interface for it.    

Both are python, minimal libraries so should work anywhere. Copy the engine binaries over to the specified folders, done.  Both have links back to get the needed back-end engine binaries ( or how to compile them ).

I paint, draw, sketch and create digital art - and a lot of it is for my own pleasure - but I also tend to have a goal - but I might struggle with articulating it - so I understand and I'm not trying to put you on the spot... but if you can give me insight into your creative goals - I'd like to hear them. 

 

In my case, its simpler than you are thinking. No hidden messages or anything.

• An exercise in neat technology, since i am a techie ( and have been involved in AI for a long time.. with robotics ). This is both from a personal level, and to help out the community ( testing, bug reports, adding my own features, etc ). 
• i like niche music, and now that its a viable technology, its just a journey to make music i like and not have to only rely on the few bands still left standing for new stuff. You can tell from my 'sampler' lists, i am not mainstream. And related to another post, its not like i can make it myself "by hand" now, even if i had the energy to do it all. So this is a way out, so to speak. While i was mainly a guitarist, i do have access to nearly any instrument i would want to use. Being in a musical family its just a phone call away.. "hey, can i borrow that cello for an afternoon"

Might be another this weekend.   "Orchestral Classic Instrumental Rock"  this time. Got about 60 songs to sort thru and weed out the garbage.   Sort of like the instrumental interlude, but more orchestral. 

And to be honest, "Systematic Revolution" wont be for everyone.  if Bikini Kill is not on your short list, don't bother.  Short songs, angry girl screaming, noisy music. TBD, while similar, i think is more listenable for the non-rigrrl fan and has a couple of really good ones. ( like Razor Transmission. im really fond of that one )

Not long ago someone came to me with a question " if you had to live with only 3 albums for the rest of your life, which would they be ?"

The first 2 are easy and not even a 2nd thought:

1. Hips and makers from Kristin Hersh ( preferably the 30 anniversary version, it has a couple extra songs :) ). Unwavering its been my favorite since the instant it came out in Feburary 1994 after Throwing Muses ( also a huge fan of ).  Oddly, i do NOT like country, but this... i loved.. 
2. The Damage, from Tapping The Vein. No one can top Heather's voice and writing in that genre.  2nd favorite, with no question when it was released, mid 2002. That they are gone, is saddening. 

And while the 3rd might have changed over time, today, with out wavering, it would be So Long, Scarecrow, from Scarling.   Jessicka, cant beat her either.  ( even when she's yelling her head off in JOJ instead ). Still disappointed i didn't catch that one until years after they stopped doing music. Id have gone to a show if it was even 2 states away...  no questions asked.  ( but JOJ i knew.. always liked it,and her. i knew she could do so much more.. just never realized she DID do more.. )

Cleaning it up a bit:

Many if not most 'traditional' AI use python modules. Transformers, bitandbytes, flashattn, bla bla etc. Its 'the way of things', but it does carry a lot of baggage due to dependencies, which often bites people in the ass and does complicate things in general.

Not to long ago, someone came up with a way to 'compress' model files, and created a native application that 'just runs' with no dependencies as its compiled. There is a slight loss in resolution, but it does open the thing up to far more people since its smaller by quite a bit, and runs faster in most cases, so its just the typical trade off like you would see between FLAC and MP3 ( keeping this music-ish ). Many have gone that route. Even companies do it, and most embedded AI uses it now too. its a great thing really. GGUF is the current file name after a couple of version iterations ( GPT-Generated Unified Format )

Recently ( after i posted the 1.5 series to YT ) a guy converted this particular music AI engine unto this compressed format. in effect.  While his was a WIP and had a GUI on the road-map, it was still a great thing so started working with it.  i got tired of writing json by hand, so wrote a simple web GUI to do it for me, as well as a few other features that i personally wanted. Wasn't meant for the masses, tho its been included in the official docs as an interface now.   And was still testing that due to some changes he made upstream when the new XL sized models came out, so back to the testing treadmill for me before i can release new music.  

And ya, i could have bought a Thor like i mentioned wanting in the recent past. On paper i can afford it, but could never ever rationalize it for what is in effect a hobby.  My Xaivers were fine as far as horsepower goes, but as GPUs age it gets harder and harder to keep up due to drivers and libraries and such, and i finally got tired of fighting.  Its the freaking NVIDIA treadmill.. it sucks.

With luck that makes more sense than that terrible blabbing i did above.

May be too AI tech, but recently someone redid the python engine to support via GGUF, and wrote a simplifed interface for that. They also released a XL model for the music, so still experimenting until i post more. ( ya, i know, i said id stop doing computer stuff, but this is music.. soooo...     And also went out and bought an Orin to replace my Xaivers..  

 

Also, about a month ago, sold off all my guitars and gear at a local music shop ( one of the few left that are 'real'. they have been in business since the late 50s ).   Not so much to make money, but to get them a new home so they can be used again.

That was a bit harder than i thought. To see them one last time, stacked up on a table.

( 100s of iterations. literally ) and sometimes clipped off the edges. But that is it for human interaction.

Ok so i had a bit of free time before today's road trip.  2 small files are attached here

song sampler.csv        - A very short list of some songs i put out on my server for my sister recently. Let her sample some new-to-her stuff.    Its based off the next file, but i pulled out some of the more representative songs for the bands. ( and might have missed a couple. )

daily driver.csv           - This is the stripped down album set of my full collection, and is what i carry around with me on a daily basis to listen to. I have more back "at home" of course but this is more than enough to get by while driving around, or walking the dogs out at the river. I have some bands i listen to at home that are not on here, as they would never work in the jeep or car, too quiet to hear it over the road/wind noise. Really, even something like Mazzy Star is pushing it.         ( not that it matters, my mp3 player actually has 2 storage units, one is this list to make it easy, and the other has the other ~400g of mp3s if i ever wanted to send to headphones if was still at the office or something, but the jeep and car only have the 'short' list. Of course at home, its mostly flac of the same list.  but mobile, mp3 format is more than good enough. )

Doubt you like but 1% of it, but you are welcome anyway and i want a full report on my desk by Monday morning.. lol 

Those would be considered pop for the hard core fans of real girrl music. And yes, at times Garbage got a bit close to pop for people like me, but i still like them a lot when they weren't, and always was a fan. ( again, their music, not worried about their personal lives ).  And i do get why bands like this veer over to more 'generally acceptable' music at times: They gotta eat.. But ill often just skip over those albums and stick with the good ones.

You wouldn't like 80% of what i listen to i bet :)    Ill have to post out my 'daily driver' album list again sometimes.

Girl punk/grunge - has never really done it for me. I dig Joan Jett - the Runaways in general... a couple other girl bands in hardcore genres - but mostly, they should stick to shit like the GoGos and Bangles.

They have their moments and do some really good work, but in general far too K-pop for me on a regular basis ( and why i'm not a club member to get to listen today ), but i feel that their acoustic stuff is really good.

Doubt anyone cares, but i was bored, dug out my AI machine last week and  "Zoe the bot" ( no, not Zoe from down south, the digital version ) created some music.  I posted it out on YT.   3rd album coming of just instrumentals, once i get past my 24 hour post limit.

My local AI created the lyrics, the music, the cover art and all the titles. I did clean up the endings on a couple to get proper fade. And cut off some noise from a couple and added the titles to the AI generated cover, but i didn't touch anything fundamentally. 

No, its not top 40 level, but its surprisingly listenable.

Well first attempt at the uncles place was not so good, but i did at least verify there were files on some of the disks, but wouldn't read it. ( but its an OLD machine with a old drive. and windowsXP was acting flaky ). So went out and bought a zip drive to have here and beat on them for however long it takes.  Turns out they are in some proprietary format that can only be read by some 20 year old windows software..  BUT the conversion app is still available for download from them, ( BOSS music ) and actually will run on win10.. .amazingly.

But 90% of them are corrupt so not getting much off.  Disappointing, but its still >0 so not a total loss.

I suspect the box was stored on a monitor ( music, not video ) and the voice coil did its damage )

Long story short:

A box of Zip disks that we think have music on some of them. They were recorded via a mixer with an integrated drive. It was used to record a guitar, so its analog.  I picked up a stereo to usb adapter, got it all fired up.  Shove a disk in and hit play. Nothing comes out.  Try the headphone jack. Still silence. We are assuming the mixer is toast. Its old, was stored in a garage for years. 

Thinking of buying a usb zip drive off ebay, but i have zero experience in trying to read a music disk on one. Never had a reason to try when i still had drives.  So i dont know if this will work at all.   Anyone ever tried something like this?

Can buy another mixer off fleabay, but its not cheap and will be useless after we copy over what is on these disks ( if anything ). So hassle of re-selling it.

You overstimate people. If radio content declines more then people will eat the new crap. We have seen it happen already, we will see it happen again.

There are a few spotify linked 'bands like x' thing ( i have looked at chosic a bit ) as well as "music-map" that seem decently accurate. However i have run into the problem every recommendation ( either via stuff like that or band member research or 'friends" ), i already know about.  I'm about to the point of no new bands, but at least some still put stuff out every so often. Once in a blue moon i hear about a new band that i somehow missed but its getting pretty rare..

I fully admit my music taste is not 'wide range', and in fact has shrunk a bit as i have got older, ( noticing this a lot as i was going thru my CDs last couple of weeks ) so im in a limited space to begin with, but if i was just first reaching out to find stuff, they would have been a lot of help still.

Oh, and my AI models, not much help either, they are about the same as mind-map. Accurate, but late to the game.

i ditched all my analog ( reel, cassette, 8-track, vinyl ) as i had for the most part repurchased it all on CD over the decades.

Yes, i know, digital will never be as good as analog, but reality is its good enough.  And my CDs wont continue to degrade just by existing ( like tape does ) and besides most of the time its listening in the jeep, which is noisy, at my desk with a tiny speaker, or a set of ear buds if im at the office. And im old, so im sure my hearing is not like it used to be either.  So its all more than 'good enough' at this point. No more audiophile stuff for me. And that i can fit all the ripped versions in a package about 1/4 the size of a cigarette pack... ( a little music player i have. smaller than an old disk-ipod, but bigger than a ipod nano   has bluetooth AND still has an actual audio jack, unlike some phones these days. and will last days on a charge, also unlike most phones )

I dont.   I want it all local.  Sure, its been ripped and i dont dig out physical media, but i want the stuff in my grubby hands, under my control.  And i never buy 'digital albums' unless there is no choice, and then only from the artist ( or indirectly like via bandcamp, but not the 'industry' ) and i can download all the files. And after that, any DRM ripped from them.

Using Discogs for the scanning.. And while they don't have labels and fell into the 'have to type this nonsense" im impressed.  All my zeppelin bootlegs from Berlin and Australia were listed..  Ah the good old days of getting Goldmine magazine from the local record store, getting out the magnifying glass and looking for "questionable' stuff to buy.. 

Kids today will never know.

Decided re-catalog and re-alpha all my physical CDs yesterday. Learned a few things:

• Far too many don't have bar-codes to scan.. grumble.  ( id say about 25% )
• Due to the above its not a one evening job.. lots of typing to to.
• Missing a few i know i had.
• Have a few i thought were gone
• Have a few "what the F- was i thinking at the time, was my taste really that poor then?"
• Quite a few i thought i had ripped, which i have not. ( or lost the files to over the years )
• Had far more than i realized.  ( over 400 and counting )
• Lots of old memories in those shelves... ( more with the vinyl collection, but those are gone now )

and most important:  i really need to dust more often down there in that bookcase. *sneeze*

Today someone asked me " dont you have any nice and happy songs ". I just blinked at them for a moment.  "why"  then left.

It's too bad they didnt stick with 'any nice songs' i could have pulled out a Zappa reference of some sort.

MusicBrainz Picard. Not yet ready to turn it loose on my collection, but am trying it on a copy. While most of it I DO have CDs of.. i tend not to bother to rip if i can download, saves me the trouble.  BUT .. file names are all over the board ( i fix many, but miss some too ) and tags, are often missing or bad. Back in my day we had standards.. kids these days.

Downloading direct from the artist when i buy CD, when those come across with no tags is the strangest.

But they are clips, so they are only 2 minutes long, i asked them if they ever plan on letting people pay for longer, as i would.   Also got out my Ai box and tried to start creating, but due to lack of GPU im stuck at about 30 seconds.. I do have 20GB, but its spread over 2 cards, and it dedicates to one.. grr.   If i could get that damned T80 working id 24G on one card to work with and i might get a few minutes out of it.. . but nooooo not unless i spend a bunch of $ on new motherboard/cpu/bla bla. .. And as a T80 is older anyway its almost not worth it and instead just buying a compatible video card.

And no i dont want to lease time on cloud GPU.  I know i can, many do, its just the principle.. 

Since they are short, files are something like 1.8mb..  i could try to find a place to put it.

Mid 80s ( i think, dont quote me on that ) i was forced to attend a U2 show.   It was the worse experience of my life, in music. Even worse than Aerosmith's drunk-tour where they could barely even stand up. it was awful..

1 - people were walking up and down the bleachers getting in your face selling drugs. Mostly acid. ( true, not the band's fault, but still )

2 - the entire set was just a wall of noise. Could not even make out instruments. 

And no, it was not the venue. they opened for J. Geils. And that sounded flawlessly. ( and oddly, the drug pushers left before the main act... )

Teaching myself "Turn the Page" right now. Every time, I start and go, "I'm never going to get this..." then... after several days, I start to get a feel for it... and sometimes... I really get it dialed in. 

So far "The Kids Aren't Alright" is the only song I can play the entire way while "singing" to - but I think I'm also getting to the point where once I get the tempo and timing of the strumming down for a song, I can start to drop the words in the right places. 

I need a real life Guitar friend to help - instead of just watching YouTube videos. A patient one.

Trivia:  Richard Pryor wanted to desensitize the "N" word.  He wanted it to be as normal as the label "African-American". Pryor felt people shouldn't be offended by the word.  When people are offended by a word the word has power.  By removing the offensive status the word, the word loses its power.  Unfortunately Pryor's goal didn't work.

It's tough ... it really is. Usually it's a turn off and I stop liking it.
But some works are good enough to transcend that. Usually they're older works, though, before the artist decided to make their soapbox more important than their soap.

Certainly, if Rob Reiner and Cary Elwes had been the kind of ultra-assholes they are now back when I bought my DVD copy of The Princess Bride, I probably would have chosen to download it. If they had been ultra-assholes back when they were making the movie, the movie would have been unwatchable. But their hatred and contempt for me was quiet then.

I've never cared enough about the two to draw a separation from who is who. Which one is Pink? 

But anyhow - I saw them at the Oakland Coliseum at some point in the 90s, when they were playing very "Yuppie with a beard in a suit" grown up rock. From the Division Bell tour/album - I guess. They had giant inflatable pigs around the outside of the Coliseum. 

Looking it up, that is a David Gilmour version... I've since decided that I'm more of a fan of the older stuff - but even there, they're something of a pretentious band. Great guitar - I also love a lot of the themes - but I feel like they're the kind of musicians who think they're far more enlightened about *everything* than *anyone* else.

Have you ever been to a Roger Waters/ The Wall concert? His personal ideology is woven throughout the light show; it becomes impossible to separate the artist from the art, as a purely logical matter. I still like some of his music.

I have mixed results with that. I've got a few levels of response. 

If the art is still good, and the artist offends me by starting to use their fame as a platform to try and preach their ideologies or politics - then it is free game. Piracy is social protest. They should not just have reduced sales - they should see negative growth. 

If the art is still good, and the artist speaks up about their personal philosophies, ideologies, and politics that I disagree with - but they're respectful that there are other opinions in the world, I may still support them. 

If the art starts to reflect their activism and they are outspoken opponents of my ability to hold a differing view - for example, Stephen King - not only do I stop purchasing anything they might profit from, and reject all of their art as a whole - but I harass them online every opportunity I get.

They didn't play it once... they played it over and over, non-stop for at least a half hour.  No other song played. The song is bad enough, to hear it non-stop was agonizing.  I found the name of the band at a later time, and that has to be one of the worst band names I think I have ever heard... but I will hate everything about this band because I heard that song for at least a half-hour straight.

When I heard that the band was going to be at Woodstock 50 I was hoping for the demise of Woodstock 50.  It is a shame they still got paid even though the event was canceled.

Motley Crue aged terribly too. They sucked in their heyday, got worse over time, and are absolutely terrible now.

I was thinking about this - and I mentioned that while punk aged well and I still find it very listenable - metal did not. But that isn't entirely true. 

Good metal aged well - and I still enjoy the Scorpions, Metallica in small doses, Megadeth, and a handful of other bands. 

But Iron Maiden or Judas Priest? Not so much of a taste for that. DIO... some of the guitar work in these bands is excellent - but the lyrics and the tropes of the genre make it very difficult to listen to for any length of time. 

Sad but predictable that most people only know Mike Oldfield from spending their teens and twenties blissed out on hippie dust listening to "the Tubular Bells guy".

On a related note, Steely Dan is one of the best bands ever.

I think Axl's whine, gravel and monotone are unique and interesting - at least in his prime. A little drop of Janis Joplin in there, maybe. There were more annoying bands. 

Anthrax has aged terribly for me. I hate the vocals. I ate that shit up in the day - so much for my taste as a 17 year old.

I am not worried.  I rarely listen to the radio, if I do the radio station is playing the same few songs they have been playing for years.  I listen to my MP3 player, which has such a piss poor random number generator it picks the same few songs each time.  The biggest difference is I don't have to hear an advertisement or the DJ making some stupid comment.

On YouTube there is an interview with Elliot Easton (The Cars) and another with Stewart Copeland (The Police), they both talk about how when they started the bands could interact with the local DJs which helped promote the music and the band.  The music industry has changed, all corporate programming comes from New York City and it is very hard for a new band to make it because they can't get their music into the playlist.

From what I understand "Classic rock" now includes 80s bands.  I hear 70/80s music played as background music and Stairway to Heaven was on a Muzak playlist around 1994.

If you haven't heard Postmodern Jukebox, you should give them a try. They take a lot of the really crappy modern songs and redo them to make them decent.
The musicians seem to be a collective of decent musicians that seem to wander in and out of the group over time an inclination, such that they rarely ever get stale. They redo songs into quite a lot of different styles and mimic many different decades. Really brilliant stuff.

I will second this, I wouldn't say the songs they cover are 'really crappy', I think they cover a wide variety of music.  Some is crappy pop music but they also cover the likes of Ozzy, Guns & Roses, Radiohead & Aerosmith.

I would also suggest 10 Second Songs.  Anthony takes songs and covers them in various styles.  Sometimes it is a song in a single style (Smells like Teen Spirit in the Style of Evanescence), sometimes it is taking a song and covering it in a bunch of styles (Take on Me in 20 styles).

I don't know about Kanye.  I am still stuck in the past, and listening to musing from my youth.  Does anyone have any suggestions to help me break free from listening to bands that are not from the late 70's to middle 80's?  Some of them are still in the business, but it is less and less these days (TMBG, Violent Femmes, Devo, Black Flag etc...)  Infrequent releases, in-fighting, squabbles over advertising conflicts with who is vegan or not.  Too confusing and or high drama.

When I was growing up there was a question that people would ask, "If you were stranded on an island and only had five albums to listen to what would those five albums be?"  (ignore the fact you have no electricity or any other problems with being stranded.)

Now with portable audio players you can have hundreds of albums on a very small device.  You no longer have to have five favorite albums.  Damn you technology, why can't you think of the Chuck Nolands of the world?

Vince-q, I will pass the suggestions along to him.  The spit argument was all I could add, as I can't play a note.  I can play simple tunes by ear, but never learned how to play anything, and the current discussion goes way over my head :-)

Leger lines? If you play tuba, you live in the leger lines. They don't tend to get much by way of transpositions. I expect the same for piccolo.

If you play piccolo (or as I do, flute) what you end up seeing is a metric crapton of music written in Bb or Eb with "8va" written all over it.

So if you've got a transposing instrument, you get to play in C, F, or G all the time.  If you've got a non-transposing instrument, you're playing in flat keys like Bb and Eb all the time.

God forbid you try to add in an instrument that's difficult to play in flat keys (guitar).

When my son picked an instrument, he classified them as follows:

Percussion, string, and "spit" instruments.

Given that the natural inclination would be to choose percussion in a boy of that age, my wife had the infinite wisdom to steer him to stringed.

And so he plays the cello instead of the inferior "spit" instruments :-)  He still respects them, but somewhat reviles them.  I would only hope to be so differentiated and knowledgeable as he is at 12.

  I am ascribing my opinions on him a bit as well, as he does not even describe something as "he hates it", but more of an opinion that "it is not his favorite".  I like that, and wish I was more like him.  Strange how your kids can change your opinion of the world sometimes.

Without a doubt, you want to look at M-Audio's line of products which do exactly what you're describing.  I've never heard a musician dissatisfied with them.

Pat Benatar started as an opera singer, but went for rock / alt music.  She did fairly well and would probably do o.k. crossing back over (not now, but back in the day).  So, I don't think that the comparison to Justin holds up quite so much :-)

I do agree with the authors point of trying to pull in the "now" to opera.  It does need some livening up (without dumbing it down).

*** Mix in whatever you have laying around.  It does not matter, as long as you have saved it.  Go to a place where you can stay hidden for a while, and don the giant headphones - long ass cord- or if you can get away with it speakers and jam.  In lieu of some spot in your own abode (w/o sad soul shared space)... get out there with a boom box in a field, or if your car is capable drive to somewhere and do an hour or two by yourself with your tunes.  Might want to bring along a spare charged battery with a good charge in case you overstep your bounds of jam bandwidth.  Have fun!

Now that was one amazing piece of music. It's truly hard to believe it is "old" - those harmonies and progressions could easily have been written well into the Romantic period and not seemed out of place in the least.
