I dont think that counts as 'people'.    Most introverts have their ( tiny ) circle of friends.    Even the hooker suggestion above, you are choosing when to have them in your bubble, and is not like being tossed in the middle of an office with a bunch of panicked people you dont even know " our stuff is broke ... heeellllppp" .  Or endless meetings as you move up the ladder.   ( i'm thankful i'm no longer a manager. i turned it down at least 2x where im at now.. "thank you, but i like what i'm doing" )

Don't get me wrong, i have worked with a lot of good people over the decades ( both fellow employees or customers when i was contacting ) and have done a lot of good for people, but it would be nice to not have to do it that way. This last year or so, not having to do it in person has been great.

There are a lot of truck teams that are spouses. One drives, the other sleeps or is in break mode.

Did some reading about it the other day, and he was making decent money off speeches and got a few grants. It all went into the bank. You don't have to worry about him, he isn't going hungry, unless he doesn't want to eat since it violates some moral code or something this week.

I have often been wondering this myself.

I bet he is living off the stock investments he made while he was making money as an FSF representative.

I'm not really concerned about that. He is a fellow human being and I wish him a healthy and well-fed existence. On the other hand, he is a colossal asshole and I really wish people would stop mistaking him for an open source luminary. His time has come and gone.

That's one thing "both sides" can agree on. I guess he still has a small circle of loyalists though.

I just trotted over to his website out of some kind of morbid curiousity, and wow is that writing style simpleminded.

There's a small number of people who are wired in a way that his rhetoric appeals to them. Beyond that, he's an unmitigated disaster. Boycotting the entire world and having autistic tantrums when you don't get your way doesn't really sell well to the rest of the people.

There's probably some bitterness in there too. It was Stallman who first envisioned the idea of an entire operating system made up of 100% open source software, but Linus Torvalds got most of the credit for that. Part of that is his own fault, though, since he was unflexible and difficult to work with, while Linus was chill and just put together whatever worked.

And in the end, isn't that what we want? Everyone working together? I think Stallman lost the plot somewhere along the line, and now he is living his sunset years as a bitter old lunatic who is the butt of everyone's jokes.

Just not as many.

Theo de Raadt is the best troll ever.

He had the guts to troll Stallman openly because he does not give a fuck about anything but code.

I mean, Theo is a total asshole, but it is an asshole I love to watch from the distance.

I admire Theo de Raadt for his dontgiveafuckery. I've had bad experiences with OpenBSD *users* but that may not be the same thing. They were blaming me for the fact that multithreaded programs ran like crap on OpenBSD.

I wonder what happens in a few years when all these key ( for better or worse ) people are gone.  Are there really any new ones coming up the ranks or is the movement over once the this batch dies out?

Of course. Some of them are names you already know. For example, Lennart Poettering is generally agreed to be the up and coming Grand Poohbah of Everything.

I suspect people from the BSD 2.x era was thinking the same.

Modern BSDs run a lot like the old BSDs so I am not really worried. Most people in the small BSDs Universe know their trade and I don't think they are short of replacements. As oldies gave up, the new ones took from where those left pretty much transparently.

I am more worried for Linux itself since it is going to be much more prone to corporative pollution.

Open source development is here to stay. I don't think that genie can be put back in the bottle. The value proposition is just too large to allow anyone to establish a choke point on it again. You'd be more likely to see problems elsewhere in the stack, not in the system software itself.

It's sort of built into the recipe. If a component becomes problematic, someone builds a compatible one without the problem. For example, no one is running Sendmail anymore because others solved the same problem with less complexity.

I worry about a lot of things. I'm not worried about that.
