I dislike swiping, I never thought it was a good idea, I always seem to false swipe and lose an item.  I think I am scrolling up and the screen thinks I am moving left to right.

My mother used a Nook for years before she had a smart phone, she is always deleting or archiving different things, telling her children "I don't know what happened to...."

Hmm. If you have a new-ish phone with a USB-C port, and you plug it into one of those new universal laptop docks ... does it do anything? How close are we to the point where your phone can be your desktop when you're at the desk?

Fucking hell. Uber is now delivering alerts to my phone to keep me informed of "special offers".

I don't want to turn off alerts on the app because they're useful when I'm actually waiting for a ride.

Even worse, the text of the promotional alerts say that they are an "update to your service". This is douchebaggery of the highest degree.

Google and apple maps use your cell phone location information to monitor traffic in real time.  Some guy walked around empty streets with a wagon full of cell phones, Google maps thinking traffic was moving slowly re-routed traffic around him.

Oh yeah, I had read of that one.

It is pretentious of Google to think they can get accurate metrics of traffic by counting the number of Android phones on the road, but on the other hand, every Jane and Doe has one, so trustung those metrics is not far-fetched, sadly.

Here in the US we have an iPhones-to-Androids ratio that is higher than most of the world, but there is still a very high density of Android devices on the roads.

It's been said that our lives are so dependent on our mobile devices today, that we are essentially the equivalent of cyborgs.  The integration between our biological and electronic components is very loose at this point but it is there.

It's called the Internet of things and it's awesome and wonderful and terrifying

and right now, countries where people are less concerned with freedom and more concerned with health are using it to track the movement of the virus.... it's kind of crazy.

IoT is the primary use case for 5G, but you wouldn't know it ... between the techno-losers who think it'll make their phone run faster, and the tinfoil-hatters who think it's a new government mind control device ... it's wack, G.

Anyone who has read even a little about the 5G technology knows that it's about lower power and higher density, enabling the use of high numbers of cheap IoT devices to connect to a cell. To a consumer with a smartphone it will make little difference.

You and I have spoken about this before, so I think what you include the US in "countries more concerned with freedom."

So, although we are not tracking infected individuals via their cell phones, or electronic ankle bracelets or anything like that, we *are* using aggregate, anonymized cel data to estimate mobility & social distancing parameters that feed into Covid epidemiological models such as IHME's.

China is lying about their case numbers, so if they weren't it would probably be apparent that their draconian approach to the problem has not been all it's cracked up to be.

They're just full of dear-leader-worship, also known as full of shit. Remind you of any other country?

there is a information screen with "Provider: AT&T" "Type 4G"

It currently states "Provider: T-Mobile". No, I didn't change a sim card.

I'm pretty sure that's possible, it just isn't commonly done. If you dig into the settings of your phone you can usuallly see a screen to select a network, but your SIM isn't registered to other networks. I also remember hearing about ad hoc networks like the one they build at Burning Man (are they still around?) where they just broadcsst a text message to all unregistered devices within range and you can join that network until you go home and get back on your regular one.

What email app do you use for your Android?

I have my work email on "Nine" and my personal email on the stock client that came with the phone. In the past I've also used K-9 Mail, which is pretty good.

I thought you mentioned K-9 before, the last update was in 2018.  I did find a website, they said the project is still being maintained and a new version will be out "soon".

This is for my mother's new phone so it has to be somewhat simple to use.

I did like K-9 a lot. I switched to the stock email app because I am constrained for space on my phone. If I could delete the stock apps I would do that instead.
Unfortunately my phone does not seem to be rootable so I can't get this crap off it.

My next phone is going to have to be rootable right off the shelf. Maybe I'll buy a CheapChinese(tm) phone instead of a Samsung.

May I assume that Apple has the same problem, where you can only "disable" or "hide" the stock apps, not truly delete them?

Not all of them, but you can delete a surprising number of apps.

But they still force you to use Safari and iMessage? Actually the browser doesn't even matter anymore, since they're all the same. My phone has *two* browsers that I can't delete, which is a bit ridiculous. I'd be willing to consider switching if it gave me more control over my own phone.

Over here in the Goolag camp, however, I've removed the YouTube app (which they still let you do) and installed "YouTube Vanced" [ https://vanced.app ]. It's exactly like the YouTube app but it blocks all of the ads. Obviously it isn't on the app store; you have to sideload it. And you won't find it through a Goolag search, of course, but DuckDuckGo found it just fine.

I've been using Vanced for a couple of weeks now and there does not seem to be any hidden badness in it ... just YouTube with no ads.

I don't think you can delete either, but there are obviously alternatives you can load along side.

Anyone on 5G yet?  Everyone still seems to think that 5G is all about being faster than 4G, and the marketing isn't doing anything to clarify that it's more about lower latency, lower power, and higher density than about the higher speed (which will not be realized in a noticeable way for most deployments).

At some point the promise needs to be kept ... I want to be able to put a 5G trinket on my cat's collar and add it to my data plan for $1/month.  As long as they keep thinking of every device as "a line" the whole thing misses the point.
