Even if one manages to avoid Windows 8, there are still elements of this design failure in other places, such as Office. On the occasions where I use these applications, I find it *extremely* unpleasant, for example, to click the File menu and instead of getting the file menu, a gigantic tile slides in from the left and occupies a third of the screen.
Bottom line: touch optimized UI looks and works badly on non touch devices.

I have to disagree as well. The evolution of window management took a
long time but both the Windows and Linux worlds eventually settled on
the taskbar style desktop as the optimal configuration for a computer
with a keyboard, mouse, and upright display. Forcing users into a UI
designed for a handheld device with a touchscreen is a jarring and
unpleasant experience.
To the best of my knowledge, Win8 and 8.1 both have a "Desktop" tile on the tiles screen. Clicking on that gives you a much more "traditional" Windows presentation. Taskbar and all - and even a Start Menu (either from MicroSlop or any number of free third-party start menus - and talk is that 8.2 will see the return of the Win7-style Start Menu).
It is even possible to configure Win8 to boot directly to the desktop and skip the "tile screen" (Metro Interface as some call it) entirely.
And there is simply no escaping the fact that Win8 is - again in *my* experience - leaps & bounds *faster* than any other Micr$lop Windows implementation to date.
For the record: I am by no means a Microsoft apologist or advocate. Whenever possible I "push" friends into linux as quickly as possible. Whatever "good" one thinks one perceives in Micro$lop WinBlows, linux is always better. Just as easy to use, infnitely more configurable, and truly open source. On those points, the Redmond folk don't even come close.
They almost, in fact, did manage to redeem themselves, but then decided not to follow through on the alleged intention of releasing the source code for Windows 98 Second Edition. It would have been lots of fun to "massage" that into a real operating system. But then why bother? Just run your favorite "flavor" of linux and if you have "certain software packages" for which there is no option other than WinBlows, just install WINE and be done with it. Or run your favorite WinBlows on a VirtualBox inside of linux (which handles Virtual Boxen INFINITELY better than WinBlows ever has or will).

complaining about specifics. I have used Win8 so I can't related.
Faster doing what? The booting? I stopped booting years ago, there is sleep/hybernate. Afaik, Win8 hybernates by default, even if you shut it down. So "booting faster" is a nice gimmick, the rest of the "faster" part might just be a new/faster hd or even ssd.
The problems with "swiping on a mousepad" is funny, since I own a Macbook Air and swiping can be an integral part of you daily OS usage, if you activate it. The thing is, all swiping is done with at least two fingers and the hardware is good enough to detect it properly. I had issues with touchpads on Win8, too. Most moronic thing, I think I actually ranted about it: If you scroll vertically on the right side of your touchpad, your tile view scrolls horizontally.
Also: Death to the taskbar, your mom does not need one. A dock like in OSX and most of your linux desktops is enough and partially a lot better.
wtf?

Microsoft has "invented" blade servers, and even scored a patent.
again ... wtf???
Hmm.. I wonder how old that patent might be. If it's too old, they're dead, as people have been doing this for a while.
See, IG, it's a brand new chassis that double checks that you are using only microsloth products before allowing full use of the blades. Also, all instructions are in pictographs, so no words are necessary, and it is multicolored to provide a soothing work environment for the other servers.
