These decision makers must be some agents sent by RMS or iJobs, since nobody sane could fuck up their own company with so much energy.

And yes, this "screen going dark" is especially creepy on slow computers, I often almost shit my pants because I think "Ok, now the hard drive finally crashed".

I heard a rumor that 'doze >8.1 will have a real start menu (not just a button) as an option. Anyone heard anything about that?

What I've heard is that it has a Start button, but that all it does is take you back to the tile view (much like using the Windows key on your keyboard).

What you probably want is "Start Menu 8" from http://http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php

What *I* want is for the world to simply stop using Windoze altogether.

I read some headline today, claiming that the next windows will have a startmenu again.

Allegedly, win8.1 has a startbutton, but that probably will take you back to start/tile view, as mentioned.

I also approve of a world without windows, makes it harder for the NSA to look into your homes... (ultra cheap joke, scnr)

On a side note: 1366x768 seems to be the current hot shit for "cheap" notebooks. With "cheap" reaching well into 600€ space, about 750$ I guess. I'd rather buy a mac, especially if it was for my mom or grandma. Or a 400$ tablet without any MS crap.

zooer: the existence of "headless" Windoze Server seems to agree with you, but even Windoze experts seem to agree that PowerShell doesn't have the elegance and intuitive nature of a Unix shell.

And in other news, here's a great article about why Connectix Virtual PC ... err, I mean Microsoft Hyper-V ... will continue to be a non-starter in the virtualized data center: [ http://goo.gl/uFjm8K ]

Yes, just after writing my rant I thought the same: "If it can do 720p, it must be hip." I guess 720p was indeed hot, but that was about 10years ago... It might be ok on a 12" display, but they are selling 15" devices. My ultracheap 12" Lenovo S12 netbook had a higher resolution, almost 4 years ago!

as even some microsoft employees admit, that the Kernel isn't the fastest and dropping behind the rest of the world year by year, why would you run it as hypervisor?

What Freak said, mostly.  Though a friend at the evil empire says that you will get at least a primitive file menu from that button, as well as the tile screen.  EG, we're too dumb to figure out how to do this right, even though we had already been doing it for 20 years, so here's a stupid W3.1 version to shut all y'all up.

If people want to use Windows, I guess they should be able to. I really rather object to our government standardizing on MS-proprietary file formats and systems, however. I absolutely loathe that I have to have a Windows machine (or at least a virtual machine) to do Army business.

Windows 8 is just the same problem Microsoft had with the Windows Mobile (aka Windows CE), where Microsoft thought that the Windows XP/2000 desktop would be nifty on a tiny mobile phone. Now Microsoft has what some people say is a good mobile interface, so they've decided that it should go on the desktop, too.

In all honesty, as much as I absolutely despise All Things Mickey$lop, the Win8 interface is really not all that bad on the desktop.

I've seen a *lot* worse on X using linux over the years. And some of that is still very much in use. And still very much worse than Win8.

And still eminently replaceable with dozens of viable options without swapping out the operating system. No matter how bad the interface, you can change it to something else. MS certainly doesn't have a monopoly on design fails, true, but they do insist that you live with it in a way the OSS community does not.

there are shell replacements & enhancements for windows too.

They're just not as common; thinking about bblean or xobelite...

Nothing.
I do not have to be paid to write that which is true.
And folks do not have enough money to get me to write falsehood(*).

(*)Satire and fiction being the obvious exceptions.
