Subject: The Village.. back again?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Well, no guarantees i dont kill it, but if it makes it a few days and i dont have 2nd thoughts, i guess its back online.

Really basic install, with no internet mail and all newbies set to level 1.  No anonymous access ( yet ).  And to help mitigate the trouble i was having last time i was trying to bring it up with my ports being flooded, its only via ToR at the moment. Might change that later tho, not really trying to hide it, just reduce my footprint to script kiddies. Not real sure what its going to do to my overall bandwidth use, being an 'internal tor node' ( cant be an exit node.. not in this area )

( and before anyone asks, its not on ARM, its an x86 VM )

You've picked a terrible time to start a Citadel only accessible by TOR.

The ones with static DNS addresses on the public Internet are struggling to get users to post content.

Could be true, but if i hosted it here at the moment, it would be inaccessible by anyone due to all the flooding.. ( hell i might get flooded enough my outgoing woudl crash and burn too. I only have 100mb u/d )

Kind of ironic that you put up a BBS and you get tons of traffic you don't want - and little of the traffic you do want.

This says something about society, about how the Internet turned out. Everybody is hiding inside of Facebook. It is kind of like a dystopian story where there are fortress cities surrounded by great barren wastelands.

Some unscheduled downtime this evening, or was it my end, not yours? Either way, had me concerned.

It was here. Storms came through, knocked out the power for a minute or two, I got distracted by some other things and forgot to turn the server back on.

IG... If I remember correctly you live somewhere on LI. That means your wiring for all things important like internet, cable, fiber, power, are overhead most of the time. Where I am (Morristown NJ) we have the same setup: dried-out spaghetti for overhead wires.

The company I founded manages video surveillance, wifi access points and ip based phone for a good sized number of clients in CT, NY, NJ, PA and MD. It didn't matter how much redundancy I had for our own ¨data center¨.  There was always one Achilles heel that I somehow missed. Our esxi server hosted virtual machines that performed separate functions, and it worked well. However, it was always the case that no matter how much battery or generation we had available...something external to our building caused problems. Cable and t1 down even though there were different providers. Cable and fiber down. or-Cable and fiber up but building power down.

One day I smartened up.

Linode, Digital Ocean, Vultr, Ionos... any of them give you a vps that never goes down. $15 bucks a month for no fuss no muss.

I am serious. $15 bucks a month has freed up HUNDREDS of hours of my time. The next time you have a power or ISP fistfck hit you, think of how much sleep you could buy for the price of a run through the chic fil a drive through.

I'll do you one better.  Apparently Oracle will give you one for free "forever" (or until they change their mind, I guess).  I haven't signed up for one myself yet because I can't think of a use for it, but I hear it's legit.  I think you have to give them a credit card number, but as long as you don't purchase any paid services, they don't charge it.

Oracle and Amazon AWS will allow you to use free services, i.e. Amazon's free tier VPS which they call a micro instance. Its pretty scaled back in terms of memory, storage, cpu horsepower and bandwidth allocation.

The biggest problem I have with Amazon Ec2 Aws and their hundreds of other services is that the free services are not free.

Their pricing structure is so nebulous and confusing that even the people that work there have plenty of difficulty explaining how it works. Ikea furniture assembly instructions are more concise.

There are TEDx talks on AWS pricing.

The nonfree companies I mentioned give you a decent spread for $15 and there's no hidden B/S.

Those are all good ideas. I'd definitely be more comfortable with flat rate pricing. I've got some other ideas to explore as well.

We have clients that fall under hipaa's rule because a portion of their business serves Healthcare. (WiFi in old age homes counts).

We are required to show 98.9 or something uptime and availability and provide indepenent certification that says so. No matter which of the 4 vps providers I mentioned before, that legit certs is included, same $15 per month plan. I am serious, I would have years of my life back if I simply could have just paid $15 bucks a month to spin up any flavor of Linux I needed on a static IP and have it ALWAYS work. This maintaining hardware in our homes or shops/little data centers is now for the effing birds.

What are your other ideas? MY other ideas can be found at citadel.smashbot.com where we have daily bonus prizes and hourly giveaways

Didn't realize that HIPAA also mandated up time of systems.  Several of ours operate under those rules, due to the medical nature of some of our agencies. I do reporting on up time ( 99.9 target ) but never have been asked about 3rd party verification.
