Heh, yeah.  My ex has this long near 1 mile-long driveway (yes, he lives in the "country") and was bringing in gravel or some such with one of those bucket trucks.  Seems they often travel with the bucket up....not necessarily the smartest of moves when on a gravel driveway in the middle of the woods.

Needless to say, apparently it got tangled in some trees and he ended up having to cut off the tops to free it up.

Big chipper, nice chipper.  Don't pull my arm off chipper.  Makes short work of a huge pile of brush, but makes you feel like you could be involved in a "Fargo" incedent at any moment when near the in-take bit of it.

There are some kids who could use 'grandparents' even if they're not blood.

A couple years ago, when the kids were both toddlers, I had a woman whose kids were teens volunteer to help out for a couple of hours a week. 

She got to cuddle little kids, and me... I got to feel a little less stressed for a few hours a week.

There are so many opportunities to help people and keep the nurturing going, IG. Foster care may be beyond the scope you're willing to go, but coaching little league, helping a stressed out mother...

Good to be back. Well, it's not like I've been hiding, just enjoying retirement!

I left the Physics teaching job at the end of the 2001 school year, retired and moved to northern California - roughly 80 miles north of Sacramento just outside of a small foothills town called Forest Ranch.

Being a ham radio operator (K2NE) since 1966, this location is a ham's dream come true - elevation is 2,575 ft ASL, and the view at "antenna height" is roughly 100 miles in all directions except to the east, where there is this MUCH BIGGER mountain than the one on which I live. Actually, out here, the "mountain" on which I live is considered a hill!! In southern New Jersey where I used to live, a 2,575 foot "hill" would be the highest peak in the entire state, by almost double.

The city of Chico lies at the base of "my mountain" - and the bicycle club down there holds a time trial every September which starts at the base of the mountain and ends about a mile or so from my house. It is a (roughly) 14 mile route and a 2,500 ft climb. Most of it, were it in France, would be considered "off category" (**very** steep).

Google map ROUTE 32 from CHICO to FOREST RANCH (California) and you'll see it.

Makes me very glad that I use the car!

Damn - now I *know* I should have kept Jersey Devil BBS up and running. It started on December 15 1983 and would be (almost) THIRTY years old! It ran, originally, on a Commodore 64, then moved to a PC-compatible 386 machine in rougnly 1987 with the switch to Citadel:K2NE and ran on that until finally succumbing to "internet-itis" in 1997 and then being absorbed into That Thing Known As NetK2NE... which is another story entirely.

IG, thanks for the TREMENDOUS effort you and your associates have put into this. It truly has become a Thing Magnificent.

It's a quadcopter shipped as a kit.  All designed as open source.  Computer controlled real time telemetry (also open source).  Enough payload capacity to carry small amounts of lighting and a camera.

I don't actually use a trackball, because a decent one isn't so cheap as a decent mouse, and I wouldn't really want to adopt it for the slight amounts of gaming I do.  When I have more money for toys, I'll probably pick one up, just because for general use I like them.

As for keyboards though, mine is a mechanical Cherry Blue switch keyboard (tactile and clicky).  I was planning on getting one for awhile, and it was well worth the investment.  My keyboard is was made by WASD Keyboards (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/), and was custom etched from an illistrator file I created for it.   Worth every penny...

Really though, having a good tactile keyboard is a really good investment if you use a computer a lot.  I know I like the blues better then the buckling springs of the model m, just because they have a lot lower pressure, I've not used enough alps switches to really say that I know much about them, especially not the recent ones.  Anything decent will be a crazy improvement over even a good membrane keyboard.

My sister uses a vertical mouse. She's says it's super-helpful.

Depending on how/what the pain is, you might consider the temporary use of a trackball.

No, but we launched those off too, not because of new years, but because they were cool and we had the resources.

The way me and my friend plays minecraft is a bit crazy, we basically just restart from scratch every 2 or 3 release versions.  Then we play for a week with all the free time that we can muster, build a new base, do some mining, build whatever abuse traps we feel will accelerate our playthrough (or be interesting to build, depending).  After the week we realize we have everything the game has to offer minus just mining and building more pointless stuff, and we'll just leave again.

For several years in the '80s—before all this Internet stuff, when people still knew what real entertainment was—I ran a Citadel out of Monterey, CA. Naturally, it was a defining element of my life, as it was for most of the people who frequented it. Thus I'm quite pleased to find this Web-based vestige of same.

Citadel/UX still has a way to go before it reclaims the prestige of the bygone phone-based Citadel BBS paradigm. However, if you can disregard the clumsiness of that last sentence, you're probably positive enough to visualize a more Citadel-populated future for all—not just the few of you who are hip enough to be here reading this, but everyone with access to a keyboard and the least desire to experience true online goodness.

When we got our first computer, my mom learned just enough that she actually understood what my siblings were doing (I wasn't in kindergarten yet when we got our first computer.) 

On the other hand, my parents kept the computer in their room for the first couple of years. I think they were worried that my brother might not sleep if it was available all night. Some things never change :)

Hmm.  LS and Rag have much better heads for the #s than I.  But simplistically, it doesn't sound all that much different from here once it's all added up, aside from the 20% VAT....

For the average Joe/Joanne Income tax is 20%, then there is "National Insurance" which is 12% (both calc'd on the gross figure, tax is only paid above a threshhold, but N.I. is payable by all earners.)

National Insurance covers things like the N.H.S. and the State Pension, while Income Tax, is for well, who knows?  the military, civil service, and whatever else the Govt. sees fit...

Then there's Road Fund Licence, an annual tax paid on cars, buses, and trucks. This varies depending on a set of criteria (emissions, engine size, etc)

Stamp Duty, is a tex on the purchase price of a house. There are more, and increasingly complex taxes, but remember, the wealthy, can usually minimise their tax liability using loop-holes, and clever accountants.

Surprised Congress hasn't figured out yet how to exempt themselves from sales and income taxes the way they have from various investment requirements or standard healthcare options.

well, i.e. my experiences about electric vehicles in china, everything runs on bateries & electricity except the cars which are dominated by the traditional automobile industry there as well.

They have three wheeled bikes in the form factor of a pickup truck with a cargo bay in the size of 4 bigger chairs; much similar to the vespa cargo trike. You can find them everywhere, almost every age. from brand new to 40 years old. I didn't see a single one of these which didn't run on battery power meanwhile. Many didn't even have a working chain to transmit pedal power to the wheels anymore.

In that week I saw 2 gas powered 2 strike motorbikes (the loud, smelly, slow ones, you know?), and lots of them electricaly powered.

cars aren't ready to be run electric? well maybe then that concept has to die. at least the way its currently done.

Here's a thing about the biker issue.

I used to ride a bicycle a lot, I've never forgotten what it was like on busy roads. I always (weather in my car, or my truck) give cyclists, and motorbikers plenty of room, I'll even hang back in traffic to make sure I get the room to pass wide.

Sadly this week has proved to be something of a bitch, and the irony is that partly thru' my own fault (by way of insufficient observation) I was hit by a 20 tonne fork lift truck, causing some cosmetic damage to my beautiful red rig :( I was not distracted by anything, I just didn't see it coming until the last second, and BUMP! But it could have been much worse.

I rather enjoyed the 550cc bikes that I had back in the 90s. I'd love another, or maybe up to a 750 or so...I don't think I need much bigger than that unless I'm riding something like a Goldwing.

when I was in college, I had a friend who had a 50cc scooter (i.e. looked like a scooter, not a moped). I don't know quite how fast it could go, but he avoided taking it on highways as much as possible. He lived in Tel Aviv, and if he left the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, he borrowed a car or took a bus. 

Saved him a fortune, b/c he worked and studied like 5-10 miles from home, and his GF (me) lived another 5 miles in a different direction. In Tel Aviv, you get maybe 10 days of bad rains - those days, he'd take a bus. The problem is that even though there's tons of public transit in Tel Aviv, but there are places 5 miles away that take over an hour to get to... :( There was a mall that was a 10 minute drive from me, and getting there took 2 busses and over an hour. 

Oddly, now that I live MUCH farther away, I have a train that goes almost exactly there, and takes about 70 minutes.

PS: I helped realizing the physical test design used in the paper, it involved some clever Y-plugs in order to record the voices of two people simultaniously wearing headsets (with stereo mics) to talk to each other while being in two different rooms. And they didn't even mention my name in the paper :(

Driving is too simple, that is the whole problem. I am working at a university department for traffic psychology and according to a recent study, only 4% of all drivers did not admit to have been doing something distracting the last time they drove a car. So 96% of all drivers do something distracting and know that they were doing so and admit  it. (Normally, people do not really admit freely to do things with negative connotation.)

And why are they doing all this stuff? Because driving is so overlearned that you are pretty sure that you can do other stuff at the same time. Look at little kids, for them it is totally difficult to balance a glass of milk without spilling it when they climb a stair. Most adults could do this while being drunk and talking to someone downstairs.

I continue using my phone while driving for the same reason: I know that nothing happened until now. Quite contrary, I have been avoiding  accidents that other people tried to inflict on my car while I was using my phone for more than 10 times now. This is poor man's statistics, I know...

Not to mention the fact that sometimes, there's actually too much happening on the road for the brain to process and react correctly.

Sadly, that's the sinister part about driving, period.  Meaning, it's not just texting.  It's flipping through radio stations or ipods, dialing the phone, eating/drinking, fighting with the kid in the backseat/person in the side seat, etc.  Unfortunately, vehicles just move so much more quickly than humans can switch focus.

Also, suspect that many do not stop after a near miss (judging from people I know), since the near miss just reinforces that nothing actually will happen.

On the serious side, I admit to sometimes being guilty of the periodic short text while driving.  That said, as Aahz and Bella pointed out, there's a bigger picture to consider.  Personally, while I generally lean against legislating people's personal choices; in this case, the ability to eat, drink large (non-alch) drinks, use phones, listen to radios, etc. in the car - I do think that there should be stiffer penalties for those who harm others (or their property) while distracted or impaired.  Especially when the impact has the potential to be life/death/vegetable-producing.  It's that pesky right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness thing...cause it can really get in the way of doing stuff, you know?

But she could have killed someone else.

Ok so I had to check. The Nokia lumia uses windows 7.1 or 7.5 which came out in feb2011. Nokia Lumia somehow won best smartphone jan9 2012. Got me how.  I mean it's not terrible, but it's definitely not the or a best by any stretch.

Everyone loves iPhones and android phones. But supposedly the new windows phones are all going to be greatly improved yadda yadda. I'm waiting for blackberry  10.  From what they told us, its going to be the biggest improvement of all the new phones.

Going well here, Groo.  I think I'm through travelling for a while, though.  Las Vegas for a week, then a week at home, then a week in Grand Rapids, MI, and now I'm back.

Actually it's a windows 7 phone, supposedly.  The new win 8 phones are expected within the year, so ill probably be sent one of those.  I got this phone as my work phone.  They send you the phone that they want you to learn and become famoar with. Because when you got to pick your own phone, everyone picked iPhone and no one ever really became familiar with any of the others.

But this phone isn't all that bad. I mean it's cheaper than an iPhone and I can get uncensored on the go.

We just need a citidel app for all the phones now.

It's evolved quite a lot over the years, but it's been here. I used to telnet, but I got lazy...

It did and it looked too oldschool for me, so I asked the devs if I could help modernizing it. Ig had similiar plans so we hacked away. Thats the spirit of open source.  While doing so we fixed a lot of bugs in html and js. We also tried to get the code as standards compatible as possible. There is still work to be done for the mobile devices, but I barely find the time for fixing it.

The web interface doesn't qualify as new anymore. It's been around over 10 years, I think.

Welcome aboard, krit.  Nice to see you and we hope you'll stick around -- please die in a car fire!  You are correct in observing that Uncensored is running an unreleased version of Citadel.  We're in the process of making some pretty low-level server architecture changes and there are dozens of little edge-case bugs that are popping up, so we're doing some long-running QA before releasing it to the eager masses.  :)

Just wanted to drop by and say Hello. The last time I had time to mess around with Citadel was in 06. I just installed 8.04 on a Gentoo VM. I'll be playing around with it a bit before opening the server up to the public. I'll post a URL here when I get it running well. I did notice that Uncensored is running 8.10. However, I couldn't find a download link. Is 8.10 the GIT version? Anyway, just wanted to say Hello...

I like watching sports in person, I do not like watching sports on TV.  It could be the color commentary which I find stupid, it could be I just don't like watching TV, or it could be because I have worked in television (including sports).

A friend of mine will celebrate his 30th birthday this year and I am desperatly looking for a certain plush puppet as a present. Story goes like this: In the early 80s when he was young, he loved this puppet. Then his slightly maniac dad decided he was big enough to live without plushs and simply threw it away. Kind of traumatized him. I was told that this puppet originally came from the USA, although it might be some japanese thing from the looks of it.

well, we had some problems with the networker which wouldn't release sessions and filedescriptors.

this is solved since tuesday evening.(europe time)

though uncensored is still a little slow since its running on valgrind to find any more problems.

I was the one who stumbled over it.  I messed up logging in, somehow only hitting the "Z" and then the easy password.  (no it isn't  "ooer", it is much easier) 

Of course the old citadel86 days of just entering the password always made me chuckle, especially when it said, "That password is already in use"

Really what I wanted to know was whether he was visiting Uncensored in general and looking around for something, or whether he was really looking to search the Citadel Support room.

My patience with Citadel support requests posted to the Lobby has reached absolute zero.

On the other hand, a site-wide search is something I would like to be able to offer. It's definitely a possibility since our index is, in fact, site-wide.
It's just a matter of writing a good user interface for it -- one that can show a list of things found in various rooms, made more complicated by the fact that you'd have to render things like calendar items, contacts, wiki articles, blog posts, etc. all together on one page.

In my defense, a Lobby is a natural starting point, and without a site-wide search (which would make it obvious where the support stuff *really* was) you are relying on my old, slightly dyslexic eyes to find the support room.  And ... that failed at first.  So yes, an interface for searching the index would be great.  Google search is adequate, but you could probably offer more citadel-specific value by writing a citadel-specific interface.

Put another way, to a n00b, there's no difference between a site-wide search or a more specific search, as we probably have no idea where to look for the specific stuff to begin with.

By the way, I liked that someone referred to me as The Coach.  If I stick around here, I might have to change my login name to that.

So I resorted to just using Google to search using the site:uncensored.citadel.org and found some posts, but no solutions.  I came up with a solution myself, which I will post in the Citadel support room (now that I know that exists). 

By the way, I'm new to citadel, having just chosen it as a way to show a groupware option to the high school cyberdefense team that I coach.  Interesting product - the kids really enjoyed it after we had it running.

We're all Facebook users, and while we all have our complaints about it, we're pretty much into it.

On the other hand, my mom raised all of her kids to be totally awesome, so that I look forward to family events every bit as much as I enjoy events with my friends. Maybe more.

• Believe it or not, Citadel is the whole reason I got into Linux in the first place. You guys opened my eyes to Micro$oft's evil ways and helped me embrace what REAL computing is all about.

The first one I ever saw was "This too shall pass" (Rube Goldburg Machine) and loved the composition of music into the machine itself (guitar, sub, glasses, etc).

Their single-scene videos are genius (tredmills, dancing in the backyard, etc...)

Are you going to buy a house generator or just a small one?  Honda portable generators are fantastic but expensive.  They can be used for electronic equipment.  You have to make sure they have enough power to run a hot water heater.

Had one in Florida.  Got lucky didn't have to use it too much.  Mostly to keep the refrigerator running, and if needed to run an air conditioner at night.

Yeah, be careful with kid-power. As the child gets older, they lose their hyperactivity and invariably get lazy. Also, hyperactive six-year-old's have a tendency to fall asleep on the spot once they run out of hyper-energy. Do you have a steady supply of hyperactive children or do you plan to find alternatives?

My three-year-old tends to get grumpy long before getting tired....

Steve Jobs was a misanthropist who used sweatshop labor to build shiny things.
Upon his death, he was practically beatified by his fans and by the mass media.

Dennis Ritchie was a real computer scientist whose work laid the very foundations for modern software; it is probably impossible to do anything with an electronic device today that does not have some C or UNIX somewhere in the process. Upon his death, he is pretty much being ignored by the mass media.

It's a sad statement about our society. Not that I didn't expect this, though.

Admittedly it's brand new so it isn't exactly feature rich -- just the brass tacks, really: blog posts, with the ability to leave comments. But it does have a seamless flow within the rest of the site (if you choose to make your blog visible to the rest of the site, of course). You can even blog from the text client and/or leave comments from the text client with the <R>eply command. It's pretty cool.

please point us the way to the hamster weel a little more detailed ;-)

btw, when in webcit creating the new room, 'blog' switches visibility to private, which is obviously wrong...

so how 'd you do it? create a blogs floor, and everybody creating a room there?

how's the public access?
