Still reading this, but free speech takes another hit. under the guise of 'protecting us from the evil Chinese'
what a scam. And people believe it.

People are suggesting this may ban VPN, Tor, I2P, and a whole host of other tings and leave the door open if you sneeze the wrong way on line, 20 years in prison.
It does. It covers every.. single.. digital.. anything.. be it hardware, software, network, everything..... Even AI and "future quantum computing".. and any digital financial transactions, so it covers and in effect outlaws non-monitored crypto..
AND it covers past transgressions. So if you did it 10 years ago, in 10 more years when they decide x was a bad actor, you committed a crime. WTF.
Welcome to fascism.. Enjoy your stay.
i give up.

US Constitution specifically bars ex post facto law. Ah, who am I kidding, that's never stopped them before.
The people should have the right to bring lawmakers to trial for writing unconstitutional legislation. If convicted, to the gallows with them.
If anything, its a reason TO do it ( for them ). The entire thing is against several bits of the Constitution really. Ok, perhaps not all of it if i want to be rational for a moment, but clearly a lot of it is.
Of course its not passed yet. Things like holding the past against you might get stripped out from it due to fear of it being struck down, but who knows. DC is run by socialists now, anything is possible.

So just to show i was not being a typical wacko i went back in to cut out that part about past transgressions.. its gone. The entire document is different now.
But now i see 2 versions. both from government sources. One still has it.
This version does have it, as well as the 20 year sentence. -> https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text?fbclid=IwAR0qWCqaFigt7B6iBoKhc3NLelAqbOdBiBWEOKGxQmZjsoVD5h4Z07U9tbA
But the link i have above no longer has either. And is different in a lot of ways. but the same name so its the same 'thing'..
I'm confused.
ok, so the short version is NOT official government.
i guess the long version is real. with the extra detains .. i donno. im lost now.

I don't like this. It imposes West China-style "give us your data whenever we feel like" requirements on any business, service, or product that is used by a minimum of 1,000,000 (one million) Americans.
It also authorizes the federal government to come in to your house and take away devices containing software made by a company that fails to comply. Oooooo, this can be abused so badly.
So, in trying to protect us against West China, our lawmakers have become West China.
Or if you have anything that might circumvent the coming firewall, like a VPN or TOR. Or that Chinese sourced phone or streaming box you bought 3 years ago off amazon or at Walmart that communicates to a Chinese IP for updates. Even tho its now blocked, the attempt is logged and they come collecting all your stuff, and you.
This is either going to lead to a fuckton of lawsuits against the government, or a fuckton of dead government agents.

Both. And a lot of dead / jailed citizens too i'm afraid. Between this and the fed working on taking our money, and ATF taking our guns ( i guess the admin accidentally admitted the end goal is to remove guns from private ownership ), this cant end well.
I know every generation thinks 'this is it', but this time, it really is over. one way or another.

I find it interesting to notice how much LM hates Twitter and predicts its total doom under Musk's management.
Too bad most of theee solutions look so bloated or half-cooked. They should watch and learn from Citadel.
By the way, is it just me, or is there an overhyped need for agressive moderation in social platforms as of late? I see so much emphasis in the need for good moderators in these and other platforms. In the good old days you walked into the Usenet, and your only defense against trolls were the hand that wielded your sword and the hand that wielded your shield, and it worked marveously.
Libtards want excessive moderation to a communist level because their ideas cannot hold even a whisker to the ideas of the right.

Do not be excessively annoying, and do not be excessively annoyed. Worked great for years on FidoNet, along with a healthy dose of "If you don't like it, take the (mostly free) tools and go make your own network." A good killfile is a marvelous thing, too.
Maybe this is why I am so ambivalent about the fediverse. I already concluded that the moderation rules on most of the large servers are unacceptable to me, so I'm certainly looking at running my own (no big deal). But there also seems to be a lot of "if you federate with X, Y, or Z, then the large servers won't federate with you", which is irritating. Maybe as the client side matures, this sort of heavy-handed moderation at the server side will fall out of fashion.
Who knows.

this is just the fediverse reflecting what has already happened everywhere else: we've fragmented into little bubbles, echo chambers.
Jon Haidt refers to this as the "post-Babel world", and it's an apt metaphor.

This is not the Usenet anymore. Instance admins who won't federate with you because you federated with somebody they dislike just want the instance they dislike competely isolated and will do whatever it takes to remove them from existence. It does not have much to do with user experience.
As far as I know, fediverse software already tends to support each user muting people or servers they don't want to hear from.
its the sign of the times. In general people are now whiny ass babies. "im offended.. whaaaaaaa ( as they cover their ears )"
Took several generations of programming to get here.. but here we are.

True. However, the latest take on the RESTRICT Act that I heard was that it was designed to fail.
The idea is that the people who are owned by China want to keep using TikTok as a campaign platform, so they built a bunch of poison pills into the RESTRICT Act such as banning VPNs and giving the government (even more than usual) nazi levels of control over social media. That way when it inevitably gets shot down, they can say "we tried to rein in TikTok, but *those* people opposed it."
