When the driveway sealer company, the pest control company comes to your door and says "Hey, I am doing a couple of other houses in the area and I will have some product left over, I could do your house real cheap."

From the "why would they want do do that" department...
Oracle has outbid Microsoft to acquire the US operations of TikTok, the popular app that tethers teenagers to the Chinese Communist Party. What is the value proposition here? Microsoft is at least known to hunger for those tasty consumer eyeballs, but Oracle? I'm not seeing where TikTok fits into their portfolio.

Easy.
TikTok is a world domination tool.
Oracle wants to dominate the world.
Does it make any sense to you now?
geez. The noise about the new owners of .org was right.
I just renewed two domains. The .com renewal was $9. The .org renewal was $35.
Glad i'm not the only one that was confused about this.
Mon Sep 21 2020 13:47:01 EDT from IGnatius T FoobarNo. Oracle's normal game is to dominate from the enterprise software side of things. They've never done anything in the consumer space.
Has anyone else noticed a sharp increase in spam the last couple of days?
This strain all seems to come from similar setups: domains registered earlier this year (way earlier - like in January) that have names which sound legit but are slightly misspelled (such as "allegistroupcareers.com") and seem to be correctly configured as mail servers -- DKIM signatures, reverse DNS, etc.
Not sure what to make of all this but I'm seeing it on both my personal and work email addresses, which use completely different spam filters, and this new strain seems to be getting past both of them.
Ironically, the last week or so my spam has dropped.. Both home and office ( at least for my account, i dont have access to the overall picture at the office. That is a different team. I only manage our ITSM system. We have about 600 staff, supporting some 40k end users, so we all have our own little silos to work in )

Its trivial to move off their platforms. Both FB and Google even
offer a simple way to download all your data at once, before you
delete your account. Donno about others, like twitter.
There are still plenty of other viable options for social media,
mail, calendar, chat, video, etc. They dont really hold you hostage,
you can pack your toys up and go home.
Yes and no.
It has been determined that Facebook and company can generate a shadow profile of you, extrapolating your interests and activities from the addressboooks and posts of your friends.
That is easy to game.
Make friends - tons of them - with people you have nothing in common with. Interact with them tremendously. Make them think you're an avid member of the Knitting community.
Fuck with them.
Again, I had them convinced I was the married straight white father of an adolescent daughter who was having a torrid love affair with his Nephew. I know because they kept sending me gay cruise ads - and also to the guy who was listed as my Nephew in a serious relationship with me.
The algorithms are fun to play with, once you figure them out.

For most people, there are career and social impacts to not at least having a Facebook account.
That alone should send up red-flags about their influence on society.

And they will do so even if you don't have a Facebook account. That's why it is important to block them at a lower layer.
At the very least, you can put the following rules in your Adblock list:
||facebook.com
||facebook.net
||fbcdn.com
||fbcdn.net
That'll get most of it, but you can also look for all the individual names and set them to 0.0.0.0 in your hosts file, or if there are no Facebook users in your home, you can block them at your DNS server.
For mere mortals, you can install DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials and/or the Brave or Dissenter browsers, which will do a lot of tracker-blocking for you.
So, today I got a call from "US Custom and Border Patrol," saying I had an international package that had been confiscated because of contraband or illegal drugs. US Customs and Border Patrol automated calls now have an Indian voice, by the way.
Interestingly, I *have* recently made a purchase from Germany. Of a FPGA computer. Maybe they just got lucky.
So anyhow, growing up in California, when I learned Spanish in college - I had an instructor who threatened to fail me if I didn't improve my horrible white boy accent over the Christmas break. When I came back, she was blown away when it got to me in the round-robin conversation and my accent had done a complete 180. I have an accent so good that native speakers mistake me for fluent.
She stopped the class, and insisted I tell the class what I had done to improve my accent so markedly. She had recommended watching telenovelas and listening to Spanish radio. "Is this how you improved, Donovan?"
I really didn't want to tell her how I did it, but she kept insisting. So, finally, I said,
"I think of Cheech Marin and Speedy Gonzalez and how they sound in English, and then I just put that accent on my Spanish."
There was a Vato guy in the class that was taking it for an "easy A" (those guys almost always fail, even though they speak fluent Spanish)... and he just broke down laughing... I apologized to him, and he said, "No ese, don't stop - it sounds AWESOME and before you were horrible, you're totally working it, you sound like my tio now!"
The instructor was mortified. Anyhow, suffice to say, my authentic Spanish accent is very "South Central LA Vato" authentic.
So, I called back the number, and some Indian answers, "US Custom and Border Patrol,"
And I start in on my thickest accent, "Yeah, ese - I got a call that you got my package?"
"Can I get the time of the call?"
"The time, I dunno... maybe like ten-therty???"
"Ok, let me look that u-"
"Do you have my package, ese? I don't have time for this shit. Did you open my shit up? You better pack that shit up and nuthin' better be missing from my stuff, youknowwhatumsayin', vato?"
I love convincing Indian scammers that America is a nation full of murder-psychos.

Social media damages teenagers' mental health, report says
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-55826238
It damage's adults and all of society.
Here is the problem with this kind of journalism.
Social media *didn't* damage mental health for a couple of decades. The way the INTERNET delivers social media damages mental health - the way social media has *evolved* damages people's health. Citadel has been around since 1984, and is the model for all social media - and Citadel developed a lot of stable, productive, happy people.
So... Facebook and Twitter and globalist networks damage mental health, seems to be a better thesis.
They'll just try to figure out how to ban teens or limit their access or modify the current social media paradigm to make it safer - rather than realizing that the problem is the current social media paradigm and the solution is to figure out how to go back to what actually worked.
