I've been refusing to give Hollywood money for years. Now they've become so deranged and insufferable, I refuse to give them my attention. CASINO and GOODFELLAS are pretty good movies, it's true. But de Niro is such a cock mongler I can no longer tolerate to see or hear him for a single second. And he's far from the only such example - just one of the most blatantly obvious in his refusal to shut up.

It's been argued that one of the many reasons the whole movie biz is in decline is because our attention span is getting shorter, and more people simply don't have the inclination to sit through a two hour long-form movie anymore.

I think I might agree with that. In addition to movies becoming just as vapid as music has become over the last decade or two, they also take two hours to consume. I don't think I do *anything* for two hours while awake anymore. I haven't seen the inside of a movie theater in years. When we put a movie on at home, my wife multitasks on her phone, my daughter loses interest in the first five minutes, and I can barely stay awake.

I don't think it's about attention span. But quality seems to have dramatically declined. We also have more options for our attention. The same people who won't sit through a two hour movie will gladly spend the same amount of time on Instagram or Facebook.

I don't know. I don't fully agree with attention span getting shorter. I think it is the will of spending effort that is getting shorter. That is why you see less people playing pen-and-paper RPG and more playing RPG videogames. The barrier of entry takes less effort (even if playing seriously can get hard if you care).

Movies take less effort to consume than, say, board games, or painting miniatures, but series take even less effort, and so series are taking over. That is my take.

"Binging" an entire season of episodic story definitely isn't the same as watching a movie. Calling labor theory of value...

Quality has definitely declined, but I was trying not to take the grumpy-old-man angle. I agree with you though. The big budget films are all "theme park" movies, and most of those are crappy sequels, prequels, and reboots. CGI has gotten so good now that it's sterile and uninteresting. And don't get me started on the trend of filmmakers working harder to push Hollywood values on us than to entertain us.

Then there are the theaters. I think most people agree that the big theaters are suffering the same fate as Sears. From what I have come to understand, the production houses have abandoned the previously-sacred 90 day window between releasing a film to theaters and releasing it directly to consumers. Some PPV services are even starting to make plans to stream new first-run films at premium prices.

Back to the attention span thing ... people will generally complain if you light up your phone in a theater, but it's common practice to poke around on one's phone while watching a movie at home.

And in other news, the person famous for giving Batman visible nipples is now dead. He may have done other things in his 80 years of life but probably nothing important.

You can say that again.

It is impressive they could do so much with so little. No abuse of special effects. No bullshit. Just a witty plot with decent actors. It seems to me Hollywood could not make such a thing nowadays for the life of them.

Phineas and Ferb movie coming out soon! I'll have to find a way to see it without giving money to the Evil Empire.

My problem is that I can't see past the person himself, which has excluded a lot of celebrities once many of them started thinking we care about their opinions on anything other than their own movies.

Harrison Ford manages to defy this truth. I dislike him immensely as a person. He seems like a total douche. But he plays the coolest characters. It is like he realized young, "I could be a great guy if I were only someone else," and made a career out of it.

I'm glad you can do that. I can't seem to do it at all. Once I know what a douche someone is in real life, I can't see past it. Now when I look at Han Solo or Indiana Jones, I see Harrison Ford.

The next James Bond will be a female of color.... and if you don't see the movie you are a racist and a sexist.

Didn't the James Bond franchise die out decades ago?

https://movieweb.com/no-time-to-die-lashana-lynch-007/

Apparently not.

While I think having a female super-spy would be great, I don't think Ian Fleming's 1940s/50s book series is the correct story line. Introduce a modern spy thriller, new character, new name. If people are still interested in the spy thriller genre it will take off.

The media is already insisting the viewers are the problem. If she fails it is because people are racist and sexist not because it was a foolish Hollywood gamble.

This is why cinema is dying. They are more interested in pushing "Hollywood values" than in creating authentic entertainment.

A female super-spy set in the James Bond universe could be interesting, but that universe became less interesting after the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall. A lot of its mystique depended on the tensions of that era's part of the Cold War.

Bond, James Bond.

Any woman (of colour or not) is going to look, and sound foolish saying those immortal words, and "Bond, Jemima Bond" just doesn't have the same ring.

It's not canon, it's not cool, and it's definitely not 007.

I didn't want a female Doctor either, but there is precedent for female time lords, so I was willing to give it a go, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, not brilliant, but not awful.

It is very unlikely I will be as forgiving of a female Bond.

Sincerely, Bella the Misogynist.

The misogyny and racism is in Hollywood admitting that a new character needs to be a *spinoff* of an established straight, white male character in order to be a successful stand-alone in these genres.

It can't be one of the MANY strong characters who were female and/or PoC from the Marvel Universe as a stand alone character. We've got to make White Straight Male Thor a piece of shit, first, and then we need to have his GIRLFRIEND take up the hammer.

Every single time.

The amazing thing is that Hollywood keeps doubling down on pushing its programming when it is clear that they've reached a point where people are rejecting it. They haven't attempted to become more subtle, to reset. They've gone, "No! We tell you what it is right to believe, and you ACCEPT it, or you'll get MORE until you learn to behave! Why is our industry dying?"

The hubris involved here is epic.

And then, the Covid thing has been their own ideology mostly hurting their own cash cows the worst. Like, they're TRYING to cut themselves off from their primary source of funding.

I feel like China must be behind it, honestly - because it takes more than Soros kind of money to float an industry that big and tell it to destroy itself. It takes NATION level money.
