The Netflix version of DD was really, really, good.  Pre-woke.  It was before Disney took over as well, they refused to renew the contracts after they took ownership.

And i cant say i'm a marvel *fan* but they did have more watchable movies and better overall character development. There are a few of the characters im a fan of however, like daredevil. ( at least Netflix version... not into paper comics )

There are enough recorded movie hours that I don't feel like I need them to keep making new movies. There are movies to fill a thousand lifetimes already made. I could just watch Hollywood burn to the ground and feed from old movies for the rest of my life.

Disney considers us dead as a demographic. They consider Millennials dead as a demographic. Amazon has just acquired MGM Studios. This makes them the new owners of the James Bond and Rocky franchises, and a substantial catalog of classic films as well.

So I guess James Bond now works for the *real* Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Seriously, all Bezos needs is a facial scar and a persian cat and the rest is sort of already there.

It is a comedy, I think it would keep your interest. It is on youtube, you can start and stop anytime. The movie is the world's biggest practical joke on one person. The star is Italian, loves Trump, but there is one thing you won't like about him.... he likes Chicago deep dish pizza.  (Never mentioned in the movie)

Still a very funny movie.  For a while I thought that maybe the joke was on the viewer, but the guy has live streams on twitch. He is completely clueless enough for me to believe this was an actual practical joke.

Probably. It seems like a lot of people don't necessarily believe in what they claim to believe - they believe in something else - but their professed belief helps them justify what they actually believe.

It was really a little bit disturbing. This "gallery" folded a few years ago, but before that... he was known for having creepy staring contests outside on the street with people. I read a little bit of the interviews - and got a better idea of what the guy is about. "Vector Gallery," is the name of the art exhibit, and the whole thing is one piece of art. 

So - I think that the fascination and preoccupation with religious iconography with certain subcultures is a reoccurring theme. Both Marylin Manson and The Smashing Pumpkins are good examples of this obsession with a kind of convergence between Warhol Pulp Art and the imagery of Evangelism and Catholicism. I mean - what this is is neon Goth. It tends to attract people who are fascinated with afterlife and metaphysical ideas - but who either have not been raised in a faith or who have rejected faith. There is often this weird dichotomy between rejecting religion and faith but being obsessed with it at the same time. He has changed the concept from the Gallery of Satan to the Gallery of Jesus Christ. I think it is also a dash of being offensive for the sake of offense. But, I don't have any sacred cows with art, generally speaking. Lots of people love when artists are tipping sacred cows they disagree with, but then lose their shit when the artist turns to a sacred cow they hold sacred.

You know, as an 80's punk... this kind of thing was always around - but it was such an East Coast thing. It is a little bit of the intersection between arts and fashion and urban desperation. Being a punk made me very tolerant of this kind of thing, because there was always some of it around - but even as a kid... I thought it was... pretentious or trying too hard? 

My daughter attends art school in Chicago... and - art scenes are always full of people who really crave attention... I get the irony that the punk scene has a lot of this element in it, too. But West Coast punk was also fairly grounded and practical. Flannel shirts, t-shirts, Chucks and Levis were as much a part of West Coast punk as studded leather, liberty spike mohawks, and Dr. Martens. People into these kind of scenes always seemed to have too much drama where ever they went. 

 
Of course, I always got the feeling that these kind of people regarded West Coast OC style punks as just another variety of banal suburban teenager only a few degrees removed from a redneck - and they're probably not *wrong* about that.

This is an IDEA, that is supported by evidence, including statements BY LGBT members of the Satanic Church, that you can't post critically on Facebook - without them labeling it hate speech and suspending your account. What's wrong with a movie like Salt, Peppermint, Mr. and Mrss. Smith, the Avengers flicks, etc. Don't recreate a male role as a woman. Just create strong women on their own terms. Sadly, it often seems forced. A lot of women just aren't that believable as being "strong".

Once again, Hollywood doesn't understand the audience and just pushes diversity for the sake of diversity, not advancing the story.

I think there is an inherent admission when they do this that they think a black of female character cannot succeed on their own if they're not a reimagined white male character - that an LGBT character can't be successful unless they were previously an implicitly straight character.

While I think having a female super-spy would be great, I don't think Ian Fleming's 1940s/50s book series is the correct story line. Introduce a modern spy thriller, new character, new name. If people are still interested in the spy thriller genre it will take off.

The media is already insisting the viewers are the problem. If she fails it is because people are racist and sexist not because it was a foolish Hollywood gamble.

Harrison Ford manages to defy this truth. I dislike him immensely as a person. He seems like a total douche. But he plays the coolest characters. It is like he realized young, "I could be a great guy if I were only someone else," and made a career out of it.

Meh, you cannot get rid or remakes these days. Either they are running out of ideas, or more likely, they prefer to cash on brands they know to be safe bets rather to try original content. I wonder how many Godzilla films I will see publish before I die. And don't get me started with Disney remakes.

I am going to sound like the grumpy old guy of the board, but I am not getting interested in modern movie releases, at least not as often as I used to be. More and more I am turning to old films and shows, including those that predate color films. Modern ones are either remakes or are full of politics. There are some exceptions, and either big names and indies alike sometimes go bold and make something nice, but still...

Although Godzilla isn't doing very well in the box office and getting mediocre reviews, if you're a fan of the original movies - King of All Monsters is probably the most authentic modern episode in the franchise to the original source material. It isn't a good "movie" - the human parts are kind of like the pizza guy showing up at a dorm room in a porn flick - you're just in it for the Kaiju fights - and those are pretty epic.

It's pretty simple: they're sacrificing quality for quantity (although even that is not exactly true if you include the prequel trilogy) for the anthology series, in the pursuit of a fast buck.

With the new cadence of a new film each year, it has ceased to be special, and with Disney, it has ceased to be Star Wars.

Comparing it to Full Metal Jacket gives it too much credit.  Go ahead, find *anyone* at Disney willing to attest in public that Han shot first.  Kubrick would have been fine with that.

I was expecting a definitive answer to the question of Deckard's heritage, but unless I missed something it was not forthcoming, also I found the premise of "fertile" replicants a bit hard to swallow.

I know I'm a few months late for this, but we've started watching the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

For some reason, I thought it was doing to be difficult to stream.  I had contributed to the Kickstarter and during the end of the campaign they were talking about all sorts of hoops we might have to jump through to gain access to the show, but it seems that the final answer is "it's on Netflix."  Duh.

Yes, it is completely worthy of being called MST3K.  The sets and puppetry are just cheesy enough, the jokes and writing are just bad enough, and they have managed to capture the spirit of the older seasons even though it had been off the air for nearly two decades.

Neill Blomkamp, famous for District 9 (and maybe Elysium and Chappie) is working on an Alien sequel. I am not the biggest fan of the whole Alien and Predator franchise, but you can not ignore them either. I do very much like District 9 and I hope his Alien might be very entertaining.

I like the way the a-team movie tries to pretend to take place but obviously doesn't in a very american way:

  - no cheap/older european cars, only upper class high priced ones accompanied by typical american ones

  - american bus - no realy. busses look different in europe. all over europe - not just in germany.

  - on german lakes you don't find old rusty fisher boat wrecks - its the most expensive areas over here - its all polished for tourists and such.

  - no pine trees next to lakes - its oaks and such, if its all settled by the rich with their shiny houses.

Well, Wagner's Ring is based on a bunch of Norse stuff well beyond the (German) Nibelungenlied.

a) the Elder Edda
b) the Volsungasaga
c) the aforementioned Nibelungenlied

The first two are the primary sources for Das Rheingold and Die Walkure.

Siegfried comes primarily from a Germanic myth the name of which escapes me.
Goetterdaemmerung is mainly drawn from the Nibelungenlied.

Curiously, in Siegfried we find both the "riddle game" and confrontation with the dragon - both are *huge* elements of the story in The Hobbit. This is *not* to accuse Tolkien of stealing from Wagner, but that they were both influenced by the common sources from which they produced their own individual "takes."

 

You will also find a bit of The Hobbit in Das Rheingold, specific to the "give and take" between Alberich, Wotan and Loge (Loki) where Loge tricks Alberich into using the Tarnhelm to assume the shape of a small animal whereupon Wotan captures Alberich in a net and drags him from Nibelheim up to the surface and later forces him to produce his treasure (the Rhine Gold and the Ring)
