The common wisdom seems to be true: compact and mid size Japanese
sedans are some of the most reliable and long-lived cars out there.

Honda and Toyota? Yes.

Subarus? Not so much.

As the primary payer of automobile repairs in a family that has three Hondas and a Toyota, I am happy to hear that we're on the correct side of Japan.

Yeah, smart choice.

Subarus last until abou 140k miles. After that, best sell them to a greater fool.

On the other hand, all of our parents now drive Subarus. But they are 72, 76, and 78, so the race is on, I guess. (The 73 year old just bought her Subaru brand new.)

If they're anything like my parents, those cars might last them 20 more years. My folks put about 5 miles per year on their cars these days.

Isn't it fun going through life together and comparing notes? ;)

My mom and dad were driving back and forth to their winter home in Florida a couple of times a year, so that was a lot of miles. However, we just reached a point where Dad can't drive anymore and Mom can't do the whole trip on her own, so we convinced them to put one car on the Amtrak "auto train" to get it down there, and leave that car there and fly back and forth from now on.
So their cars will just be local trips now.

My mother in law on the other hand (the 72 year old) drives long distances all the time, including coming to visit us on a regular basis (from the Poconos to Uncensoredland -- about a 2 hour trip). She puts down a lot of miles.
But she just ordered a brand new Subaru so that car has a long way to go.
She's giving the Accord to my daughter. It's in great shape and despite high mileage has a lot of life left in it.

I did the Auto Train back in 2018, when we only had my Scion xB for a year.  That was freaking awesome!

When i was a kid my dad was a traveling salesman covering 3 states.  Put on TONS of miles. When i was that age, i ended up being a traveling network engineer covering 3.5 states.. Put on TONS of miles. Sort of ironic.

A friend ( not a good one, and i'm thinking of not being...)  bought yet another new car.  he has money, likes to show off.. whatever.  I dont keep up with modern cars, they suck.   it was a SUV.. "um, so what another fancy SUV, wait, what is that on the front..  a freaking horse??"    i guess mustangs are now electric SUVs.. wtf.

So i expressed my displeasure.  "sad to see mustangs be reduced to..."   rather mild statement, not even bashing him for buying that PoS, purely the brand.          He freaked out.

And it IS sad....

My new car, scheduled to be built the week of 20 Feb, is a 2023 Ford Escape ST-Line Select.  I ordered a hybrid with AWD.

I dont care they make these sorts of cars.  its called capitalism. My beef was destroying the legacy of what a mustang was.

When my mom got her 2021 Mustang, the Mach-E had just been released.  We noted how it was a "Mustang in name only."  Don't worry, my mom's car is a real Mustang with an explodatron.  That car is so freaking sexy.

Unrelated, sort of,  i miss my roadrunner,. 1968.  My 1st car. ( 2nd was a 68 firebird.. )

I kick myself every day that i let it go.  Every damned day.

Was swapping engines, underneath the thing, bolting up the transmission, looked up and one of the frame members where the torsion bars were housed was rusted about 2" from my face.  This was not long after we lost the body shop, and i really didnt feel i had the skills to replace 1/2 the frame. ( or the money... poor college student )

Kept it another 10 years.. under a tarp.

finally gave in, sold it to some collectors.

Next month a product came out that wrapped around the exiting frame.. even bolted on ..

arrrgh.

so does a classic suv body style.

The *classic* SUV body style was way more truck-like. The statement it made was "this is a large vehicle."

The modern body style of what they call SUVs is more like "we're all going to pretend this isn't a station wagon."

And it's a shame the venerable old station wagon has such a bad reputation when it was one of the most useful body types available for many, many years.
I proudly drove a wagon for most of my 20's and it didn't bother me when people called it "the old family truckster."

The classic longbody wagon was a beast of a machine!  The amount of stuff those things can haul is unreal.

My grandmother had a Gran Torino back in the 1970s, with the classic wood paneling and the back hatch that opened to the side. It was truly the classic American land yacht. Then she got a 1979 Volvo station wagon, which she drove until about 2004. That thing lasted a long time.
