My first thought is the ECM.

Pull the battery and let it reset.  see if it makes a difference.

Nope. Mechanic confirmed that the transmission itself is fubar. It is a small miracle that I was able to limp it 44 miles (about 70 km).

This car is 21 years old with high mileage and in need of some other repairs.
Now I have to figure out whether to repair or replace it.

ack.  that is too bad.

I had similar once, a reset took care of it.  On my jeep, also showed transmission issues, but the ECM was the problem gain, but had to be reprogrammed.  ( known bug )

I ever mention i dont think computers belong in cars? :)

Must be an automatic transmission. If the car is that old I'd sell it.

So it predates the overwhelming computerization of modern cars.

Keep it.

Nope. USD $5000+ just for the tranny, plus another $2200-2500 for some work it needs on the suspension and other things.

Even my mechanic, who would make a lot of money from us putting it back on the road, said it isn't worth fixing. It would be far more than the value of the car.

maybe as a DIYer, you could rebuild your own manual trans.
Maybe, with some luck.

But not likely to happen with your typical automatic.

We junked it because it needed about $7,500 in work just to be reasonably driveable again. We're shopping for another vehicle today ... and realizing how ridiculous the inflation has made even used cars.

Inflation and that damned ' cash for clunkers ' took so many used cars out of the mix and are still feeling the effect. Even junkyard parts.. since they had to be destroyed, not sent to the parts bin.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that. It does explain why transmissions for pre-C4C cars are hard to find and/or expensive when you do find them.

it obliterated supplies for people like me who still has a Fiero in the driveway. ( and a few other cult cars )

Thankfully most jeep owners flipped Obama the bird on that.

Apparently we learned that the hard way. Hopefully that's a problem we'll never have again. We got the IGlet a truly "gently used" car, a 2010 Honda Civic with only 53,000 miles on it. A quick search on eBay for automatic transmissions for that car shows them in the hundreds, not thousands, of dollars.
Hopefully we won't ever need to replace a major part like that but it's good to know they're around.

I like my Civics. I drive a 2015 coupe and my wife has a 2014 sedan. Cheap and easy to fix, reliable, not the most exciting cars on the planet but they go down the road just fine. I'd still be driving my silver 2008 coupe had a Lincoln Towncar not totaled it. My friend has a 1998 that could use a little bondo but mechanically its just fine.
I'd like to have a fun car too, got my eye on a coworker's 77 TransAm, but waiting until I have a garage to put it in.

Honda makes some good cars. And I never drove anything with a stickshift that felt quite so smooth as my friend's Accord.

Clutchfeel on stick-shift Subarus always felt garbage to me (and clutch master cylinder was constantly failing, making it easy to grind the gears.)

The common wisdom seems to be true: compact and mid size Japanese sedans are some of the most reliable and long-lived cars out there. Our family now has two Hondas, soon to be three (my daughter is about to get lucky; grandma wants to get rid of her Accord). The 2012 Accord that I bought for myself but my wife is now driving has about 120K miles on it and is still in good shape.
The only issue is that there is a bearing whine somewhere that we'll need to address eventually. I just haven't been able to figure out which part it's coming from (water pump, A/C pump, etc.)
