MR2?
it was muggy AF yesterday morning. Only about 68 degrees but the humidity was off the charts. I ran the window unit AC for the first time this year, until the haze burnt off a bit.
already got a puncture in one of those brand new tires, so I ordered a replacement, this time from a walmart marketplace seller.
this one was manufactured in jan 2022! so they're not discontinued after all in this size, maybe all these availability issues are more of that global supply-chain pandemic crap.
track day is set for jun 7-8 at PittRace. fully paid, booked, locked, and loaded.
And I have also been impressed by how nicely the Walmart marketplace is growing.
Despite it being Walmart I'm glad someone is competing with Amazon at scale.
New DeLorean
No, i dont think i like it. Aside from not personally being a fan of 100% electric, it looks too much like a 'yet another commodity car' with gimmick doors that dont fit the style. Unlike the original, which DID fit. Seems like more of an insult to the legacy and his name than anything else.
I'll have to check that out...
Track event was a success. And those tires held up.
I could write a book about this but I'll try to keep it short.
* PittRace is an excellent track. There are long straights (enough for me to hit 110 without any trouble), a chicane section which includes off-camber and elevation changes, technical S turns, and some high speed kinks, one of which is a bit blind but not too bad. 4 different straights when the north and south sections are combined. >2 miles. Couldn't ask for more.
* It's not just the car, it's the driver. This was my first time, and I'm "only" in a 330i. As this was a BMWCCA event, most people were in M-cars (plus some cool stuff like a 2002, something that looked like a Cobra, an Elise, and a few other odds and ends.) Therefore I was in one of the lower-HP vehicles on track. But I wasn't the slowest guy in my novice run group; there was a guy in an M2 that I was consistently passing on the second day.
* My '17 F30 330i (4 cyl turbo) can beat the E46 330i (2000-2006, 6 cyl, normally aspirated) in a straight line.
Later on I'll process some photos and video.
Oh, and I meant to say that my F30 330i has the ZF 8-speed auto, as does PD's 235i. I never had a problem with the way it shifts; Sport mode is nice on the street.
But it's garbage on the track. In order to get that last downshift, you have to use the kickdown. And I think that's dangerous on track. You'll want to get familiar with the way that left shift paddle works, and lean on it heavily starting from the brake zone through to acceleration. Might as well just tape the paddle down ;)
Maybe the M235i behaves similarly; neither of these have the full M setup. I was talking about this to an M5 guy, and he showed me how that works. Said "you can't shift better than the car does." It has so many different modes that it needs presets, like radio buttons.
The automotive press gave the F30 chassis and suspension setup a lot of hate. I'm not sure why. I let my instructor drive mine, and let me tell you, in the right hands it doesn't feel that much different from a Hellcat in terms of body roll and lateral acceleration.
Talking to a friend about EVs
Looks like all Tesla's now have extended range batteries installed. But unless you pay for an OTA upgrade you get standard range. What a freaking ripoff. I wonder if its a monthly payment to boot. I hope there is a hack for that, you bought it, its yours. screw them and their fraud practice. And i hate the government getting involved in things normally, but there should be a law against that.

Also, the only thing recyclable about Tesla cars is the battery. One of the local car recyclers stopped accepting Teslas because they're made of plastic. Apparently they rebound back into car shape after going through the crusher, meaning they can't be transported to the car shredder. Whoops.
Odd. aside from not being the first "plastic" car ( even one of mine is plastic on the outside.. ), i have seen people do body work on them. And like most cars, mostly metal. Perhaps its specific models?
Girl i follow on YT made a truck out of one.. lots of welding involved..

Nothing a small tactical nuke couldn't fix.

I want to go so fast i arrive before i left.
For your next build, consider buying an Aorus Tachyon (motherboard)...
Yesterday I got a call from my son while he was on his way home from driving his grandparents to the airport (why ... they're retired, they have money, and they still insist on flying out of LGA when they live just a few miles from HPN ... but that's another story). His car started losing power, but he was able to get it off the highway into a residential neighborhood. We have AAA but he was far out of the free tow range, so I headed down to his location to check it out.
It was only capable of inching forward a bit, no matter how fast the engine was running. Sounds like a transmission problem, and it probably is. But it was the WEIRDEST one I've ever seen. If I shut the engine off for a few seconds, I get ONE acceleration out of it, and as long as I keep it in (what feels like) second gear, it keeps going. Let it drop down into first, it loses power and nothing can get it going again.
For 44 miles I drove it like that, limping it along for two and a half hours.
Getting it out of the more populated towns was tough because I had to restart the engine every time I came to a stop. Once we got on less busy roads (and it got later) we were able to go for longer stretches between restarts.
This was a weird one.
