Registration and Geolocking the original source would get "around" the rules for now. ( what happens afterwards, 'isn't my fault' )  But this is just a foot in the door.

So you need a license to exercise in free speech, in effect.

That is what The Pirate Bay is for.

If they can't prevent piracy against Disney they can't do shit about this one. Besides the files can be hosted overseas.

This is just they pretending to be doing something.

We shouldn't have to 'get around' exercising our rights.

Also, in this case, exercising your rights by getting around their suppression of information can get your door kicked in by the FBI and a local team of goons in riot gear.

Best case scenario, they shoot your dog and laugh about it.

It would be nice if it went down like that once and it turned into a massacre for them. But usually ONE cop gets a flesh wound and the entire family who is the subject of the no-knock warrant ends up leaving in body bags.

I suppose you'll just have to host them offshore, as many are doing now for various types of things.

I've heard that Singapore is the new hotness when it comes to staying under the radar, because it is on the boundary between the US commies and Chinese commies, piously claims fealty to both, and tends to be left alone by both.

Tor/I2P is still an option for hosting stuff on-shore.  Unless you screw up its hard to find you.

Include FreeNet in that.

It depends.

If you actually want to be reachable by average people then you need clearnet presence.

However, even if you find hosting that is willing to carry your controversial site, if search engines decide to gang against you you will never be found.

Oh, i know there are trade-offs you have to make for 'net safety'.

So you make a responsive web page and dont need an app.. runs anywhere on anything..   Its 2022. its not that hard..  Native apps are a form of lock-in unto themselves.

Yeah, that whole thing really revealed to me how clueless he actually is. Even if you wanted to stick it to Apple, you don't need to make new hardware. If he really wanted to fuck with the market, he'd make his own OS, support hardware that already exists (probably Android phones), and add compatibility layers so that it could run both iPhone and Android apps.

I know there was rumor of his own phone line at one point in the recent past.  I saw some tester units waved around at one point.  Fat ugly things shaped like a Tesla truck.  I wonder if this is just an excuse for its official launch and to get people to buy it.   Nothing is ever as it seems.

If he really was truly upset over apple and google and wanted to come up with a line quickly and easily, i know of several Chinese companies that make phones  ( any market, from low end to flagship level ) that for a few extra bucks woudl brand them for you and produce tons of them.  Would be an instant phone line.

I bet even Samsung would, for the right price, they even have an alternative to Android..

What makes you think that's not already the plan? (Should it be needed at all, of course.)

We're already at a point where most "apps" could have been built using only the browser. Taking that to its completion would bring free speech on mobile to a very good place, because anyone could build a mobile OS and have the full "app" ecosystem just by having a browser.

I am unabashedly pro-Elon during this particular season. He may not be a technolibertarian purist but he's doing more for the cause than anyone else right now. And he's exposing a lot of high-profile hypocrites, which is also good (the way he pwn3d Alyssa Milano was absolutely delicious).

I guess the only advantage to a 'store' is the captive and consistent payment system.

So ... with regard to all of the people freaking out over Twitter because free speech is a threat to free speech.

I've noticed that most of the people who believe that "no censorship" and "nazi" are synonyms, are threatening to "move to Mastodon." Do they even know what Mastodon is, or do they think it's just the online version of Canada?

A couple of years ago when we first started talking about the Fediverse, some folks here pointed out that there was a community-wide effort to block GAB from participating. I anticipated this would be a problem once Citadel began supporting ActivityPub (yes that's still in the roadmap) because I wasn't going to allow blacklists *in the code* and that seems to be what they wanted.
Today I did some catching up on the status of things, and it looks like GAB actually shut off the federation function on their site anyway?

I still believe that Citadel sites belong in the Fediverse, and will implement it someday.
(It requires completing WebCit-NG first, which is several years behind my anticipated schedule due to some side quests.) I do wonder a bit, however, about the culture on the larger network. Some of it looks extremely politically-correct, and there also seem to be a few free speech absolutists out there. I am wondering how the space will look when we join it?

No, they have no idea what mastodon is. its just the new buzz word. " we can use that mastodon thing and attack maga!"

And i suspect we are going to see the general concept of federation collapse here soon and growth of a siloed world..  Just a feeling.

Mastodon is the first Mastodon-compatible software in the twitter-like space.  It's cool because you can spin up your own Mastodon installation and have a commewnity.  The downside is your commewnity can be blacklisted by the Mastodon devs, which also blacklists your server from the entire Mastodon "fediverse".  What servers does this happen to?  The ones that don't toe the communist "demokrat" line.  So you can be in the federated Mastodon space, but only if you are a commie.
