I'm *almost* impressed. Someone was persistent enough to target our system and they figured out how to read the user list. And they were attentive enough to figure out that we have an IMAP service. I've confirmed that every one of the compromised accounts has had the extortion email placed in its inbox.
"bobdoe
" was shown here because that account was twitted some time in the past.
What they didn't seem to notice was that we don't give new users access to outbound Internet email. They also didn't seem to notice the actual purpose of this site -- it isn't a freemail site or something like that. So they're not going to get much accomplished while they're here.
As for our little neo-nazi friend ... everything which you all posted
today has been part of the thought process. I take this very seriously
and I truly struggled with it. It's the difference between offering
people a platform for hate, and offering a platform for what the media
calls "hate".
IMO if somebody comes with an impopular subject but keeps it contained within a secluded environment, it is less of a problem. It is when one comes here and starts stormingunrelated rooms that it becomes problematic.
Imagine I love my horses so so much that I want to marry one, and I set a room for talking about marrying horses. If I only talk about marrying horses in the HOrse Marriage room, it won't be popular but people will only be bothered if they visit the room. HOwever, if you are having a serious conversation about Sniper Asassin End in Movies and I pop up and say that movie is offensive because it does not feature horsesexual characters... that becomes a serious problem.
The trashcan is an ok option I guess. I'd personally feel a bit trashed if I started a room about something that really mattered to me and was moved there because it is impopular, though.
If I were to start a strange topic in a platform such as this, I would first ask the administrator if it is an ok thing, though.

I fucking love this scams. Not.
What I find disturbing is they are surprisingly successful.

Well ok, I'll try.
By the way, why is there both a Trash and a Trashcan? I keep . Gotoing Trash by mistake.

Ah that explains it then. Kept seeing all these recent logins but never any new posts from anyone other than the regulars. I saw a lot of different IPs ( i looked out of curiosity the other day when i noticed ) so figured it was not a typical attack thing.
Oh and i got 10 of those damned 'we saw you on camera watching porno and owe us bitcoin' emails today. Aside from noting to record other than some old guy staring at a screen and a dog at his feet, its a hell of a trick since my camera is left unplugged ( its only even out of the drawer in case its mandated for an office meeting. Not going to plug it in for nothing as it gets warm. )

I might call the room something else like "argumentative junk" but ya, conceptually i totally agree.

"Trash" is the deleted items folder for your mailbox, as with most mail systems.
"Trashcan" is a much older concept, at least here. When we ban a user, instead of silencing them completely, all of their messages are redirected here. The similar name is confusing but it's been like this forever.

The sheer volume of these, and the fact that we now see that they are truly just mass mailing them, makes it clear that these are not targeted attacks.
I got one with my name on it once but the spammer probably just had a mailing list with names.
It's a good scam because it appeals to known functions of human nature. Sexual behavior is still considered "dirty" in Western society (which itself is silly, but that's another discussion) and so there is still a bit of a taboo associated with porn. Most people *would* have a problem on their hands if a video of them fapping to adult films was distributed to their family, friends, and coworkers.
In any case, one would imagine that if the extortion scam were authentic, it would address the victim more personally and it would probably contain a few frame grabs to demonstrate that they really had the goods. Maybe even a few names from their contact list.
Now ... just wait until the scammers gain access to the ability to manufacture that video where none actually exists!

I got one once that said they had my PornHub account and password. What's crazy is that they shared the password, and it was actually a legitimate password that I used to use when I was in high school, and it's not a common password. Of course, I've never had a PornHub account, and I use a password manager these days, so I'm sure they just got an email/password pair off of some old forum data dump and used that. But still, it certainly caught my attention for that moment before the rational part of my brain caught up!

We're already there, but deepfakes still require some amount of sophistication.
You're right, though ... once the technology to make them is cheap and everywhere, things are gonna get VERY messy VERY fast. It'll take a while for people to learn -- IF they ever learn -- that they cannot trust their own eyes.
I'm not sure why anyone would have a PornHub account ... but then again, I don't understand the business model of adult web sites when they appear to be giving away all the video for free.
Subject: Re: ALARM - I'm hacked you and stolen you information and photo
I donno either, but they are making a killing. I know i mentioned it before but i got a job offer at a porn publisher to manage their Linux servers, it was paying well over 150k, in the late 90s.... Just to to be a tech to manage a handful of servers ( they also filmed on site, so not just a streaming service. Not that i cared what their business was, but shows you how big of an operation it was, and if they were willing to pay me that much for doing almost nothing.. they were rolling in cash )
And i have played with the deep fake stuff a bit since im in to AI, and if you have the funds its damned good already. Even more if you have the cash. Its plenty good enough to pretty much turn upside down the entire legal system now if someone is out to get you. "that was not me, i dont care if it looks like me beating him with a bat.. i was in another state"

I think we have talked about this so often that it is not worth it to bring the subject back up from the dead.

Lol I was going to say, I think you and I had this conversation on irc2p. I don't remember whether it's a conversation that's been had here.
If I remmber right, the cliff notes were: I made a comment similar to IG (I don't get how they're making money, it seems like it's all free if you put forth the absolute minimum amount of effort). darknetuser's response was that they prey on a small population with a psychological problem. There are some people who get addicted and obsessive and don't want to miss out on any material, or something like that.
Subject: Re: ALARM - I'm hacked you and stolen you information and photo
But I guess I'm thinking too much to be the kind of person they intend to scam. And I don't have logins on any pr0n sites either. I only have an account on something called "UNCENSORED!" which is obviously trouble :)
Subject: Re: ALARM - I'm hacked you and stolen you information and photo
well you dont want censored pr0n do you?
Fri Sep 23 2022 11:34:57 AM EDT from IGnatius T Foobar Subject: Re: ALARM - I'm hacked you and stolen you information and photoFrom a cybersecurity perspective, it seems sensible that if they steal passwords from a pr0n site, they could then try those passwords on other sites to see if they can get emails and contacts etc, and then the scam would work.

There are the ones who can't stop taking more and more porn and who want all the porn they can get, and it has to be HD, because anything less won't work for them.
Then there are the ones who are fans of a particular girl or a particular director or photographer or whatever. Usually the ones that are hardcore fans prefer to pay in order not to have to waste time looking around for the content they are missing in their collection. Sure, you can get most stuff from a particular girl for free, but tracking it down takes a lot of time, so if you can solve that with a fistful bucks and you are really a hardcore fan, you are more likely to spend the money.

Its not just girls who star in those things :)
Wont google find them all for you?

That sounds like addictive behavior ... not very healthy at all.
Lusting after a particular girl and collecting all of her work doesn't sound very healthy either.
