I shudder to recall the endless mountains of drama that resulted from my local BBS meetups.

Avoiding pizza was a joke of course :)

Back in dial-up days, met a wife via BBS.

IRC days.. another.  ( we had local channels, all got together and hung out a lot.  Not quite the same as a BBS but we kept 'outsiders' out of the room ). Also met a couple of people that became really close friends over a couple of decades.

FB days.. mostly just to keep in touch with people that have moved away. And of course a couple of special interest groups.

After FB collapses..

If you're a programmer, don't expect to find a wife in the workplace; female programmers seem to be more rare than diamonds, LOL!

(I'm no programmer but I may learn some day)

True, the chances are slim but if you find one often they are a gem. ( sticking with the diamond theme )

That said, my first job, doing COBOL ( late 80s, with EDS ), there were more females than males in the group. And i would say the overall % across the board  for the company was about 50%..  Of course they dont exist now, and that was 35 years ago..

( and man i feel old... )

Maybe I need to find a new employer. The only female programmers where I work are a far cry from anything I'd ever describe as gems.

I may have published some code.  Does that make me a girl purrogrammer?

Oh right, with the successful porting of Citadel to FreeBSD and then giving the code to I. G. Foobar?

Even before this.  Dont have to be contributing code or being paid for it to be one.  Just 'do it'. so to speak.

But ya, contributions are good too. ( or being paid, like i used to be )

I'd say that if you write code and it's worth using or sharing then that's more important to the software community than your sex or race or age or any of a thousand different things that people care about in an identity-obsessed society.  Let the work speak for itself.

Ya even if its just for yourself and dont want to share, or for your company and cant share it with the rest of us.  Its all the same to me. You do code, you are a coder. Even if its crap code, you still made it.

And ya, like IG says, unless there is a romantic interest, ( which is on a personal level, not a coding level anyway ), it dont matter what you are or want to be.. for any classification.. you are a Human Coder. ( well i guess if you are from Mars or something we do need to talk about that.. :) )

Don't let the hunt for pussy guide your actions. Ever.

A friend of mine is taking lots of calculated steps in order to increase the chances of getting a mate. He got fit. He changed his looks for the better. He is taking calculated finantial decisions to become wealthy enough to afford a relationship.

End result is he is actually getting laid but he is still unhappy because he is finding no gal worth more than a casual hookup.

I am not gong to elaborate, but the market seems to be saturated with single males so walking into the market is a losing proposition.

I was playing Agricola with family yesterday, building farms with animals and stuff in order to support an ever expanding home and family (which is the goal of the game: have the best family and farm and house). While placing one of my farm workers on the "Wish for Children" (aka fuck and make children) action space, I thought it would be awesome to have a lady farmer with me to help me expand my house and farm and family in real life.

Then I remembered most people I know IRL who gets into relationships gets burnt, or is abused by the other part. Official statistics regarding in-relationship happyness are plain awful. Also, in countries that allow divorce, it is common for ex-partners to hurt the family the pets in order to hurt the other member. I am certainly not making my horses property of a marriage and turning them vulnerable to such a thing.

Combine this with the fact that being a fit, wealthy responsible man is no longer enough to get a gal because competence is so fierce, gals can get their men from market-like places, and even if you are selected you are still disposable. It seems to me the effort to get yourself selected is not worth it if you are gonna get used up and discarded.

If you wanna get loved then get dogs and horses and whatever. It seems to work better in the long run.

(Full disclosure: I am a fat asshole whose personality makes him gulag material, but I base my opinion of watching _other_ people get burnt, so if you wanna make a counterpoint then don't use the wel known argument that I only think what I think because I am an ugly fuck that no girls will ever love)

But some of us like cats, and dont tell our resident kitty.... Oh wait, not that kind.. never mind.

Kidding aside, its nice not be stuck working with guys all the same age all the time.  Having a variety of people to work with is nice. Ages, sexes, interests, etc. Breaks up the monotony many jobs have. Not that you have to be best buddies or something, but it can make $job more tolerable.

Speaking of programmerings:

I released KittyGuard v1.1 last night.  No real code change, just a modification of the rc script, but worth a release due to the severity of the fix (minor fix with huge effect).

GitHub is a Microsoft product, GitLab is independent.

GitLab doesn't secretly feed your code into an AI trainer without your consent.

GitLab is open source, you can run your own GitLab server without paying GitLab.

All the projects i follow use github.  Donno if they have it in both places.  I do have an account there so i can keep copies. I assume gitlab can do the same?  If so i could follow yours too :)

For personal work i use fossil...  i suppose if i were to start posting stuff online, i should stick it out on chisel and not be a hypocrite.
