Why would wifi be different than the Internet connection available through the carrier as far as the phone "phoning home" and being able to grab an update from the manufacturer?

Fri Jan 01 2021 12:40:17 EST from Nurb432

Keep the WiFi on and i woudl assume you get updates from the google machine.

He something about an "invalid device", so i assume that means no carrier data.

Hmm ... a little ducking came up with this article [ https://tinyurl.com/yap4q47o ] suggests that "unlocked phones receive software updates directly from the manufacturer" so I guess that means a Pixel purchased at a big box store will simply download its updates from Goolag for as long as the device is supported.

I have no problems with T-Mobile but I also don't feel compelled to tell them what kind of devices we are using, and I think I will be buying unlocked devices exclusively from now on. Now that CDMA has been dead for a while and phones are built to support more of the 3G/4G/5G bands, it's an easier proposition than it used to be.

Of course, when I can't reach my daughter because she turns the ringer off and then doesn't keep the phone on her person, I'm tempted to just cancel the fucking plan altogether.

The newest Pixel now have the adaptive battery charging feature.   Instead of a rapid charge they slowly charge therefore extending the life of the battery.   Google found a way to screw that up.

1) users have to start charging the device after 9 PM.
2) users must have an alarm that is set between 5 AM and 10 AM.

It is limited as it is.  It doesn't help people that work nights as they will be working they only time they can use this feature.

I had forgotten about that - but, assuming that the device still has WiFi data - if you can't get an update through the manufacturer - the carrier is actively doing something to block it on their network.

It may try and send you a carrier update and balk at that because it can't determine the model from its list of ESIDs or however else they know you're a carrier phone on the carrier network. That is fine, "You bring a device that isn't one of our preferred devices onto our network, it is between you and the manufacturer how well that works..."

But it shouldn't block you from getting a non-in-network update straight from the manufacturer, as long as the phone works on their network and has a data signal. I feel like something like that must be in violation of whatever rule was passed that forced the carriers to open up to unlocked phones.

Ig's response makes it sound like this is something like how it works. To me, it is all just curiosity - I've been tempted by unlocked phones but always end up buying from Verizon in particular because I wasn't sure if things like this would be a hassle.

Speaking of Android annoyances - because there is no "mobile app" as a Citadel client - I access my Citadel from Chrome on Android.

This works out OK - but... for the web client, I want it to be a fairly visual experience. The problem is that there is no way to cut and paste an image from Android into a Citadel message composer window.

With a full PC, this is trivial, pick your image in an image viewing app, copy it to the clipboard, paste it into your message in Citadel.

Android wants you to SHARE the fricking thing. If you copy it in a file manager, you can paste it somewhere else on the file system of the device, but you cannot paste it into Chrome.

Anybody have any workarounds for this annoyance other than adding the image as an attachment? That works - somewhat less than ideally.

I thought it was always that way..  Everyone with their pet projects, tossing stuff against the public wall. Even if it overlaps other peoples projects, just give it a new name and all is well.  And then when any particular dev guy/team gets bored their pet project gets discontinued, even if lots of people use it.

"Go forth and code"  ( no pun intended there on GO and FORTH :) )

From what I read the latest update for the Pixel phones will correct that annoying screen rotation issue.

Now if I can figure out why it makes the alert sound but doesn't display anything.  Looking in the recent notifications doesn't show anything.

If you thought your text messages were secure, or had end-to-end encryption, think again:

https://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/verizon-t-mobile-at-t-urged-to-safeguard-sms-mms-messages-related-to-riots

The default messaging apps usually don't have end-to-end encryption, perhaps apple does.  Most of the third party messaging apps do have end to end encyption.

(And before Ignat says anything....  end-to-end encryption doesn't matter.)

I would not go that far to say it doesn't matter.  It keeps the regular snoops out.

Government funded snoops, better be using a platform you control to go along with it.

Please, do!

I have been on a quest for a reliable phone for long. The closest I got was an old with custom firmware. I see commercial offering from time to time but I cannot afford them.

My Xiaomi phones have been rock solid.  have been using those for years now, and the wife. ( dont worry wont get into the android one discussion again :) )   But, they are still tied to android and all the potential risk that goes along with that, and i thought id look into something a bit more open.

I dont suspect the software is yet ready for daily use and replace a 'real' phone, but it will still be interesting to mess with, and the software will improve over time.

Well, looks like this weekend Xiaomi just went on the 'grey' list from the DoD. ( no restrictions on import/export but no US investments )

Super.

While i totally agree companies like Huawei are a serious threat, these guys are not.

Replicant comes close, but then you are restricted to some old smartphones if you want full functionality.

Then you have LIneage OS, but I think it still defaults to Google's DNS.

Purism phone seems to be all hype, but no results yet.

The /e/ project actualy aims to be a de-googled system and so far they have results to show. Still not production ready, but you can get an /e/ system if you care enough.
