Its what we had at the time so I suspect it would have went on for a while longer perhaps even a decade or 2, then slowly coalesce around a couple of key platforms as computers in the office and home began to be more critical and wide spread.

And as much as i dont like either of them, it did help move the market along with a more common direction, with less wheel re-invention and more wheel painting.  And hard to beat IBM marketing machine for business back then, which got computers into many more homes as a side effect, with a more 'serous perception' to do 'real work with' than the 'kids gaming computers' that were there now and dismissed as 'just toys'. ( ya i know its not true in reality and those were just as good, if not better, but it was general perception, and perception sometimes is all that matters )

As far as Apple being 'it' i donno, as without Microsoft to bail them out at one point, they my not have survived at all. So no Microsoft, no Apple.

But its hard to say what could have happened.  So many variables.

ended up in a world with lots of incompatible architectures

One likely scenario might have been CP/M continuing its ascendance alongside the IBM monoculture, eventually becoming the operating system you run if your name isn't IBM or Apple. And I think Apple would have done fine if they simply didn't bring back Steve Jobs. He's the one who screwed up their cadence by sabotaging the Apple IIgs and forcing Macintosh. There was a convergence going on that Gates and Jobs both disrupted.

Gates still needs to copy Jobs' final performance. As soon as possible, please.

CP/M would have naturally given way to a unix eventually, possibly even Xenix, which was slated to replace MS-DOS before they decided that aping the Mac was their first priority.

No doubt about it, Gates and Microsoft retarded the entire industry by a decade or more.

There are several news reports that Melinda is upset at Bill over his relationship with Jeffery Epstein.

When I see a picture of Melinda I have trouble distinguishing her from Kaitlyn Jenner.

There were a lot of people involved with Epstein.  It is a shame he accidentally committed suicide before bringing those people to justice.

There are plenty of widely-circulated photos of Bill Gates palling around with Epstein.  Bill's trips to Pedophile Island are too well known to bury.

For all we know, Gates is the one who provided the funding for the Clintons to have Epstein murdered.

Melinda Gates had been seeking a divorce from Bill since 2019 after his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein became public, the WSJ reports

Figures, Bill believes anything over ten years old has reached the end of its useful life.

She first met with divorce lawyers in 2019.

To be fair, anything of this magnitude does take some time. She wanted her ducks in a row.

Of course the paranoid might suggest they are working together, to save 1/2 of the fortune if he goes down.

There are several news reports that Melinda is upset at Bill over his
relationship with Jeffery Epstein.

So I came here to say that.

You know, it doesn't make a lot of sense. The articles report that Melinda's concerns about the Epistein relationship date back to 2013. She also met with him. Didn't like him. It appears that she may have succeeded in getting her point across to Bill, as Epstein was known to complain that Gates had begun to mostly ignore him after 2014.

So it becomes a concern for Melinda only after the relationship with Epstein is publicly reported in the New York Times around 2019 or so? Either something about that report was also news to her, or she was more concerned with how this would play out in terms of Gates' public reputation.

Everything about E is weird.

Even the people that only hung around for the 'power contacts' and didnt technically do anything wrong, still were too close to weird stuff and let it 'slide' for their own benefit. "its just rumors"

Something like that. He's also known to be a workaholic, and hyper-competitive, so when his mom got him the inside track at IBM it was really just nothing but business douchebaggery from that point on.

It would be interesting to imagine a world where IBM had managed to keep the hardware and software of the PC proprietary, whether they would still have a monopoly, or would a competing open standard emerge, would we have ended up in a world with lots of incompatible architectures, would Apple have supplanted them as the big ogre...

One thing is for sure: putting the guy who said "640K ought to be enough for anybody" (and later denied it) in charge of computing standards for decades, sure held the industry back for decades. We're still not completely free of that legacy but we're getting there.

As for Mrs. GoldDigger ... I searched for details but most of the hits point back to a poorly sourced TMZ story that says the whole family is furious at Bill, they all went to a private island without him to escape media scrutiny, and the decision to split was made in March.

(I supposed "poorly sourced" and "TMZ" is redundant.)

I had missed the Epstein allegations.

The thing that is so disgusting it is hilarious - is that Gates and Microsoft have been at the forefront of driving anti-child porn technology, according to their press.

Evidently red meat isn't the only thing that Gates thinks is ok for he, but not for thee.

I agree - her sudden concern as of 2019 seems to indicate that the shoes are NOT done dropping from the Epstein scandal - and that the fallout from Epstein's suicide has yet to all settle.

Ig will be so vindicated if Gates goes down as part of the Epstein scandal.
