Ages ago, in the MS-DOS days, I saw a config.sys file with a peculiar parameter:

USER=id10t

I suspect technical support had a frustrating time with the person who owned that machine.

This is referenced as "error on layer 8" often. The OSI model of networks knows about seven physical layers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model#Description_of_OSI_layers.

Um, are all of those layers physical? I thought some of them were logical.

Physical, Schmüsical... Layer 8 is the metaphysical one, based on the ID10T protocol. Everything above layer 1 might be considered as pure semantics, I guess. Wether you are using copper or homing pigeons is decided there, the rest should behave identical, only speed might be different. But I might be in error here.

Heh.

I know some folks who find the OSI model generally metaphysical.

As for me? Eh...

Write this word on an index card then fold the card in half so the word is not visible. Go up to someone you know, unfold the card and ask them to pronounce the word.

The way they answer your question will tell you everything you need to know about their sociopolitical-economic "persuasion."

The word:

UNIONIZED

Referring to the common maintenance tasks for the M2 .50 cal machine gun, we tend to use the phrase "headspace and timing issues" to obliquely address some of our more interesting "leadership challenges."

Believe it or not, we have a pizza place in Chico CA that is every bit as good as any pizza I ever had in Philly/NJ/NYC.

If you think that the pizza is equivalent in Philly, NJ, and NYC ... then you're not qualified to comment on it.
