My first thought is the ECM.

Pull the battery and let it reset.  see if it makes a difference.

Nope. Mechanic confirmed that the transmission itself is fubar. It is a small miracle that I was able to limp it 44 miles (about 70 km).

This car is 21 years old with high mileage and in need of some other repairs.
Now I have to figure out whether to repair or replace it.

ack.  that is too bad.

I had similar once, a reset took care of it.  On my jeep, also showed transmission issues, but the ECM was the problem gain, but had to be reprogrammed.  ( known bug )

I ever mention i dont think computers belong in cars? :)

Must be an automatic transmission. If the car is that old I'd sell it.

Keep it.
