You agree *with* Slashdot, or you agree with me *about* Slashdot? It's amazing that the site is still around and there are still people having the same lame-o conversations there that they were having 20 years ago, over topics that no longer matter. They haven't just jumped the shark, they've launched into space and jumped forward in time to a future where sharks are extinct.

Wow. I hope I get that survey question. I think they've already made up their mind about me, though.

I should have taken it and done screen captures to show the predetermined bias. But it pissed me off and i closed the section. So no way to bring it back.

Latest version of Google Photos ( for android ) had lens built in.  So decided to play with it some.  It actually did pretty well, even correctly identifying locations based on bits of images of buildings.

Then i tried an AR-15.  Nope.  Tec-9, Nope.  Seems they are censoring that stuff.

Google Lens is either hit or miss.  I have had luck with some things, no luck with others.

When it was a separate app, for me it was mostly miss.  After i noticed it was part of photos, figured id give it a try again.  Myself, i dont really need something like that, but it was there, a new toy.

Seems i'm not the only person that noticed it was censoring, others have commented out on Reddit.

I played a little with Google Lens. Usually I use an app called Envision AI made for the blind to do image recognition.

Maybe I should give Lens another try for fun. I recently got a Google Pixel 4A with 5G and mostly like it. Sometimes it could act a little more responsive, but it has all the features I want. And I disable all of the Google services I don't use. I know some Android alternatives exist but unless they have good TalkBack accessibility then I can't use them.

I use Lens for QR codes, when I need to find something or translate something.

The other day I saw a logo in the window of a building that has been empty for  a while.  I didn't recognize the logo, I used Lens to try to identify what was business was moving into the building.  Lens was useless, no help whatsoever.  I took a picture, uploaded the image to Google Image, it found the logo as the first link.

If people don't recognize your logo, it probably isn't a good logo.

It was a regional credit union, I recognized the name but not the logo.

QR Code recognition is beginning to appear in the stock camera app.

Lens has been part of the camera app options for a while, if they moved it to automatic detection for QR codes that is different.

I think this is both the advantage and the liability of Android.

It could be that your phone - either the manufacturer or the carrier modified the phone for that network - adding their own camera.  I mean, even when the Nexus phones were supposed to be "The Google experience," I remember there being differences between the phone on Verizon and "unlocked" that caused controversy. I can't remember the exact details now... But... this was from a time period when companies and corporations were far less blatant and arrogant in their "screw you, we decide and you just buy it and shut up," approach to the market. I imagine things have only gotten worse.

Google is running a Chrome "origin trial" to test out an experimental new tracking feature called Federated Learning of Cohorts (aka "FLoC"). According to Google, the trial currently affects 0.5% of users in selected regions, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States. This page will try to detect whether you've been made a guinea pig in Google's ad-tech experiment.

Vivalidi, while based on chromium, is supposed to prevent that from working.

Good for them.

Personally i would have zero issue with what google is doing on tracking,  IF it was optional and opt-in only.   I think opt-out anything should be illegal.
