Pretty sure he means the tiktok bill?

  • Some feel its just a door way to censorship
  • Others feel its to kick the Chinese to the curb.
  • Some ( like my self ) think its mostly ( misguided ) legit intent out of fear of the Chinese but will be abused on day 2 due to a combination of lack of analytical thought, and intentional holes.

Truth lies somewhere between.

He said it was their dear leader, not ours.  Wrong nation.

The so-called "tiktok bill" is, like many bills, exactly the opposite of what it claims to be.  That piece of garbage is basically an Internet version of the Patriot Act, designed to give the government powers to infringe upon any site it wants to, just by saying "yep it's subversive and probably controlled by an enemy" without asserting any proof.  Furthermore, there is language written into the bill guaranteeing that any challenge or arbitration would be done in a Washington DC court, which assures us that their intention isn't to take down tiktok but rather to take down free speech and/or conservative sites.

That same 'law' is being discussed in several countries.  With the same reasoning, and 'holes' that could be potentially exploited.

Perhaps there its an executive order where he is at, but its not just the US that is doing it.

To be fair,
I am in favor of the "tiktok-bill", because I see it's potential. On the other hand, this bill will also be used to grant the US-citizen less /muh/ freedom.
Why? The US-government will abuse this bill to spy their citizen more, i.e. back in the day of Bush and Obama the CIA and NSA spyed on their citizen due to fear of "national security". They needed an outside threat to justify their abusive relationship with technology which enhances mass-surveilance.

Not really able to verify other than a couple of security cam videos but it looks like FBI is visiting people now who posted anti-Biden tweets, and perhaps FB too.

Ya, IF it was used as the stated intent and with the original rules ( ie, not banned, just change ownership ), im ok with it.

For the record, I am opposed to a TikTok ban regardless of intent or implementation or adherence. If you don't like TikTok, then don't use it. There is no scenario that justifies the government making these decisions for me.

Technically its not a ban on tiktok, its a ban on the fact its Chinese owned.  All they have to do is sell, then its free to do business here.

Sure, the net result is that it wont get sold and be banned, but its not really against the actual platform as it does have an 'out'.

Still don't care. The government doesn't need to be in the business of banning things that people can choose to engage with or not on their own voluntary will.

So i take it you would disagree with banning Huawei network products, or prohibiting direct investments in enemy companies/states. Or blocking selling/sending enemies arms?

( no not being sarcastic, but at its core, its effectively what this 'ban' is, not counting the probable mis-use down the road of course )

We should be selling guns to the Chinese people so that they can take their country back from the commies.

And yes, I don't trust the federal government to ban much of anything. There's no value in removing options.

Now, enforcement, that is another issue. "ya, im 18" and no real way
to prove it otherwise.  ( until we are all implanted at birth with
communication/tracking devices )

Some countries are tying DRM-like schemes in which the government gives you a certificate that states your age, and then their plan is to force sites to allow certified people in only. I find this incredibly dangerous because the next step is to issue certificates for arbitrary compliance (ie. being a good Chinesse Communists) and deny Internet usage to disidents.

I cannot share my location since that would blow my identity.

In any case, the backslash was so huge they had to reverse the decision. Aparently they took down some services businesses were using for internal comms and command and control.

The "people", im ok with.

Problem is every..single...company is directly tied to the CCP.  When you let a 'Chinese company' in the doors, you let the CCP in too.  Just the nature of things.

I was speaking ore about here in the US due to our laws it woudl make proof hard.

But ya, i have heard of other countries doing stuff like that, which destroys privacy. ( and is still cheetable.. much like having your older friend buy the booze. or buying a fake ID )

If the bill actually bans TikTok then I am in favor of it. TikTok is an engine of the Chinese Communist Party (whose leader looks like Winnie the Pooh) whose primary function is to turn Americans into blithering idiots.
Apparently it's working.

However, the chiComs own so many people in the US government, corporations, and media, that there's no way it'll actually get banned like that. They keep saying "data security" but the real problem is that TikTok is a foreign propaganda weapon.

No extra points for observing that Facebook and Google are controlled by roughly the same gang of badguys.

Oh, please. You're smarter than that. The people on TikTok were already blithering idiots. That's why TikTok appeals to them. Next you'll be arguing that owning a gun and playing DooM makes me more violent.

Obviously those things appeal to me because I'm already a homicidal maniac.
