I flew home through Atlanta on Delta last night.

Had been in San Antonio.

We landed in La Guardia last night at 11:20... right on time.

We got to the gate at 12:50 am. Took an hour and a half to get a gate. Got home after 2.. I'm so fooking dead today.

Years ago I had to travel to El Paso, TX for a second time for work. I had built a network on Ft. Bliss that was not connected in any way to their network, but once AT&T put in the T1s we were not able to connect to the network, nor were they able to get out.

I had to fly out on the day after Thanksgiving as well.  We were at my wife's parents place, so the closest decent airport was St. Louis, which was a 2 hour drive.  I left my in-law's house at 2AM.  St. Louis said to get there two hours early, I had a 6AM flight.   I get to the airport at 4AM, park in Iowa, take the shuttle to the airport.  I get to the airport and there are a bunch of people there waiting to go through the security checkpoint.  The checkpoint was closed.  They didn't open up till 5:15.   I flew to Dallas (I think, I could have these backwards), had enough time to sprint to my gate to fly from Dallas to El Paso.   Get to El Paso, and after 10 minutes have it fixed.  The guys from my company that were there take me back to the airport, and I have 4 hours to kill.  I fly from El Paso to Houston, and I have around a 6 hour layover in Houston.  I land back in St. Louis at Midnight.   I drive back to Southern Illinois to my in-laws, and get there 24 hours after I left.

I hated that trip.  The issue we ran into is I had to clear the ARP table from the firewall.  The Army delivered my connection via fiber.  They didn't have enough copper going to the building we were in, but they had plenty of fiber.  So I had a fiber converter to ethernet plugged into my firewall.  On the other end they took the fiber converter and plugged the ethernet into AT&T's router that we had to put in the Army Central Office.   Someone to test the fiber plugged their laptop into the end in the Central Office.  My firewall saw it and grabbed the ARP MAC address as the next hop and didn't release it when someone rebooted the firewall.

But did you bill for 10 minutes of work or 24 hours of work?

I've been thinking about doing some of my Delta flights from La Guardia instead of Westchester. How do you get to the airport? My wife or my son will drive me to HPN but not to LGA.

Sounds like those guys were top-notch experts. Plugging in a laptop and entering a couple of commands to clear the ARP table would have been way too easy, but they were able to tackle the extremely difficult task of driving you back to the airport.

I was internal to the company support, so I rarely billed out to the clients.  I don't remember what I put down on my time sheet or if I was entering timesheets at that time.  In fact the 12 years I was there I billed out to customers less than 80 hours total.  In fact for a few years I stopped recording my time because I was told I didn't need to since I didn't work with external customers.

As far as the guys that were on site, it was two trainers.   They were their to run the simulations and to teach.   Not tech guys, though they had one other guy there that was there as support for our application, but he was more of a desktop guy at that time.

One project I did bill out to the customer, I was billed not as a Network Engineer/System Administrator or anything like that, I was billed as camera/sound crew.  We needed someone to fly to Minnesota and record some interviews with our customer's customer.  Everyone else that did this was out in the field doing these and they needed one more, so I got talked into doing it.  It was a nice change of pace.

I'd avoid LGA until they have on-site parking again. Shuttles suck.

I have car service take me. Is not cheap. But it gets billed to client so if they really insist on in-person support they can pay for it.

When I would visit my parents I would rent a car from/to the airport.  The airport is about 50+ miles away, the rental place was close enough to their house it was a cheap option.  You can estimate prices on the Uber/Lyft websites, renting a car is about the same.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I can spend *some* money but it's got to be reasonable, otherwise it remains cheaper to fly a different airline that can get to my destination from White Plains. My most frequent trip is Raleigh NC. Delta flies there from LGA, but if I want to go there from White Plains I have to connect in Atlanta, some 400+ miles out of the way. American flies there from HPN with a connection in Washington DC. I really do like Delta better, though. Also, dealing with regional flights to/from DCA involves the infamous Gate 35X, the terminal's basement dungeon where you get shuttle buses to/from the tarmac. (That's also the location where a careless wheelchair operator smashed my broken foot into a post, and then scolded me for not having the foot far back enough in the footrest.)

So if it's going to cost a *lot* more to get to LGA just so I can fly with my favorite airline, our expense-reporting system will automatically flag me for it.

I really do like Delta, though. Their entire fleet is being updated and is very comfortable.

Delta does have a good ride. I just try to keep one airline if at all possible. For points, etc...

I've been on a lot of Delta recently. But I really dislike the Atlanta airport.

I am trying to keep to one airline too; in my case it's Delta.  I made the choice based on it being the airline I most enjoyed flying, but it may have been a poor choice based on the places I need to go.

When I am (God willing) not limping anymore, I might just take a train to LGA and fly from there.  <shrug>

I'm partial to Jet Blue. I'm in Tampa every other month. Really easy flight.

Delta has sucked for me. Perpetually late or cancelled flights.

And my last Delta flight, I swear the plane was older than me.

Flying to Tampa from where? From JFK or LGA the choices are many on any airline, but from HPN the choices are somewhat limited.

Delta still flies a couple of MD-80's, which are really old; I'm not sure I'd be comfortable getting on board one of those either. Fortunately they're not in use on any route that I normally fly. (You'd think that by now they'd be replaced with MD-86's, which have 16-bit jet engines.)

I fly out of HPN most of the time. Occassionally LGA. I refuse to go out of JFK.

Worst case, I can fly into Orlando and drive the 90 minutes to Tampa if I HAVE to get there for some reason.

What's the problem with JFK? I was thinking about starting to consider flights from JFK, because I can get there by rail.

I don't like wasting time. JFK sucks to get to, to park at, etc.

I just go to sleep in the back of the car service car. Wake up when I get there. Less to worry about then.
