Hmm... my Nexus 7 Wifi tablet just sorta became a brick for reasons inexplicable to me.

I'm going to try a factory reset-ish thing and see if it will recover, but... I'm thinking this 4.4.4 upgrade is stinky-bad. I never had this problem before.

What is it about Nexus devices that is different than regular android devices? I see there are two versions of
some apps the standard app and then a "...for Nexus" app.

I haven't seen that, and I have a Nexus phone. That's interesting.

http://gigaom.com/2014/08/17/its-2014-and-android-fragmentation-is-no-longer-a-problem

People who are admittedly iOS fans, are now admitting that the whole "fragmentation" thing is a myth nowadays.

Apparently, Google has solved the problem by moving a lot of functionality out of the Android core OS and into a library called "Google Play Services" which they're keeping updated even on older versions of Android.

What would happen if I "clicked" Android System's 'Force stop' in the application manager of my cell phone?

This also solves the problem of Android clones made by Amazon/Samsung and nukes all the free Mods like Cyanogen. You now have to install Google's tools, hand over your soul and data, in order to use certain apps, because these apps rely on Google Play Services. So either you maintain lots of lines of codes to make your app compatible with Kindle and play-serviceless decices, or you simply stick with plain Google Android. Of course, there is the option to not use these apps, but why use Android then?

As I said half a year ago, they are on their way to nuke the free/"Open Source" Android, kill off the whole Android brand and move all the stuff over to "Goolge Play" or "Chrome" brands.

I for one am in favor of having code that permanently bricks the phone if the default search engine is set to Bing.

By free you mean punishing someone for switching their default search engine?

Not a lot of people would survive ignat's utopia.

Apparently, one of my gmail accounts had its password picked up by some Russian hackers.

Unfortunately for them, the password they have is wrong, and the account in question uses that two-phase security thing Google likes to encourage.

So that's nice.

Am I reading the news correctly, that this breach is three years old? I've changed my Gooooooogle password since then.

That could very well be. I don't know if perhaps those passwords were released recently or something. I should ask them.
