If I could choose to eliminate Bill Gates or the *founders* of Google, the choice is easy. Bill Gates. Anyone who does not choose Bill Gates deserves to die along with him.
This hasn't been about the "founders". You're changing the goalposts.
It was, from the start, who has more POTENTIAL for evil and who should be a bigger concern to our society.
Bill Gates or GOOGLE.
Google is objectively a bigger threat to society than Bill Gates. Not that Bill Gates isn't a threat - but Google, the company Alphabet - is one of the more present dangers to the fabric of our society - today... along with Amazon and Facebook.
Thu Jul 08 2021 15:59:37 EDT from IGnatius T FoobarThat's a false dichotomy. If I could choose to eliminate *Microsoft* or Google, I would choose Google as well. I'd prefer to eliminate Amazon or Facebook, though.

Quite honestly, we've reached the point that if all of Silicon Valley were wiped from the face of the earth, I wouldn't shed a single tear, and would in fact perform a celebratory dance.
Agreed. Our industry is full of brilliant and terrible people.

I would, only due to the fact id have to find another career. And at my age, that would not be trivial.
( unless you really JUST mean the valley, and not the entire industry )

Without getting into legalistic specifics of the wish I would present to this theoretical djinn, I anticipate you could easily find gainful employment in the void that would follow.
Not saying i dont have other skills. But when you're mid 50s and the entire market collapses where you have been for 30+, it would be tough unless i stuck my shingle back out and went on my own.

Trust me - at our age, if you're male and white and in IT - it is a tough sell.

LOL
Rules for thee, but not for me. Serfs. Get back to work!

Oh, id have to get out of IT totally. ( of course we were talking the collapse of the industry anyway )
Problem with my non-IT skills is that i dont have a 30 year verifiable career wrapped around them, so not technically 'experienced', on paper, and if you have the choice between someone about to retire and a kid out of school, which one do you chose? Sure i can whip out parts off a mill with the best of them, or paint cars, hell even build houses like my dad and grandfather did, but when you cant show commercial experience, sorry for your luck.
And if the entire industry was gone, you would have a LOT of out of work IT people, so that would making doing that on your own a non-starter too.
Other problem is a couple of my skills are very specific and only something a national government could exercise.

Why bother with unreliable djinn? Level the Bay Area using the largest available bombs. Level the Seattle area too, of course, because Amazon and Microsoft have to go. The trick is to do it without warning so the Bad People don't escape to other places. There are plenty of other tech heavy cities in Massachussetts, North Carolina, Virginia etc. and the last thing they need is a bunch of refugees from enemy lands.

A former user of this BBS (Peter Pulse, for those who remember) (who like most of us is also an IT worker/developer) once looked at me and said, "someday, you and I are going to have to make an honest living."

The djinn will always find a loophole :)

I don't think being a computer tamer is going out of style anytime soon.
With more and more riding on the computers, people who know how to make them work will remain in demand.
The destruction of San Franciso and Seattle, and everyone living there, would be a net gain for the industry. The industry would not go away. It would take some time to re-organize but it would survive. It would improve with the worst people gone.

If I could choose to eliminate Bill Gates or Google, I would
absolutely choose Google.
It is tough call.
I think I'd rather finish Google off if just because that means more people would get to be eliminated that way. Also it would allow another search engine to take over... maybe Privacy or Gigablast?

Yeah, then cheer for their deaths using a PDP-8 to connect to some BBS via analog modem! YAY!
