Funny how the "protect teh environment" people want MPG ratings that are increasingly impossible to achieve without doing silly things like auto start/stop and full electric, but the implementation of those things creates a lot more solid waste. Seems to me the environmental impact works in the wrong direction.
To me, having a vehicle that I can run for 20 years or 250,000 miles seems far more environmentally sustainable than one which will be unmaintainable in less than 10 years.
That is because it has nothing to do with environmental impact.
Its only about control and cash.

Such a shame. I had no complaints with my Kobo Libra 2 for two years, but today when I tried putting new files on it they refused to show up. It's possible I could have fixed this by converting them with the kepubify utility, which I just learned about. Instead I did a factory reset in hopes of fixing database corruption. Lo and behold, what do I find during the setup procedure? Apparently "signing in" is now mandatory, and not something I can just skip like I did before. It didn't recognize the email address that I know I ordered it with, and when I tried creating a new account with another email address, I never received an email. Sad, but I only have one life and it's too short to waste on nonsense like this. So I'm done with Kobo and all their works, and I eagerly await a device with an e-ink screen that runs a real OS which is under my control and doesn't demand I jump through corporate hoops and create Yet Another Account on Yet Another Website.
Of course my physical books will never have any such problems. But it's a shame that a great technology like e-ink is the victim of such widespread, near-universal corporate malfeasance.
Wow. That does suck. I used to have a kobo of some sort, 7.8" perhaps.. but its long gone. ( also had some Russian thing, also gone. forget the maker now )
Now its either likebook or pocketbook ( color models ). Neither of them have done that. Yet. ( and 2 old nooks, that i need to toss.. see another thread )
I dont think there are any e-ink manufacturers not tied to china.
Tue Feb 20 2024 18:06:11 EST from nonservatorOnyx would be at least somewhat tempting but I do everything I can to avoid giving money to China.
Yeah, all the hardware comes from there. The best you can hope for is that the company that sells it isn't based in China.
China is apparently bringing a new panda to the United States. But instead of going to a zoo, it's going to a resort that is 57% Chinese owned, something called "Disney".
Pandas are really defective animals, which is why they're hard to breed. But of course they're broken -- they're made in China.

It sucks, doesn't it? But then, when we get a deffective horse or dog we love him the same.
Wont name any names, but seems an old forum i was on a decade or so ago, another person got into my account and posted bad stuff.
The sysop does not believe me, so rather annoying, but glad i really dont care about my reputation there. Was over that 'world' long long ago.

Too bad.
I hope whatever that dude does on line does not refect on you IRL. One of the reasons why I love darknet technology so much is that if something like that happens to me, they cannot trace my connection back to me from their shitty forum.
Ultimately in the end it cant. Anyone that knows 'me' and one of my 2 nicks, "well, that wasn't me" and that is the end of that. None one has exclusive use of any name in the world. If they dont believe me, oh well. But its still annoying tho.
I did finally talk the sysop into changing the account name that was being used to something else. Of course that does not effect things like the wayback machine.

When you are not paying attention and bleed all over the floor. Now you have to clean it up.
grumble.
If you are doing a product demo of some software application, actually enter demo data. Don't just wave your hands "well, it would look sort of like bla bla if i had data". The entire point of a demo is to SEE it... not imagine it.
One guess who the company was.

I am hoping that I'll be able to use that excuse if anyone ever tries to cancel me for something posted on a comments section somewhere out there. I tend to be completely unfiltered and speak my mind in those places.
Funny thing about that, a couple of years ago I witnessed a situation in one of those comments section where a troll decided to take on the same screen name of a cranky old coot he was arguing with for a while ... the guy got so angry he said he was filing an identity theft claim. I'm guessing the authorities laughed in his face for doing that, since nothing was stolen, the troll didn't try to open any accounts in his name or access his bank accounts or anything like that, he just wanted to make the guy's head explode.
Since you are pretending to be another person, would be be under the umbrella of libel, which is pretty abstract at times. What is "damage" ? Is making me look stupid or that i support a cause i don't, ( for example ) considered damage? Is the potential for me not to get an interview due to your words being interpreted as mine, damage?
If ran ran out and pretended/convinced people online i was Barron Trump and i support Hunter for president over 'my father', but nothing else, im sure id be sued...
Perhaps, but the dude specifically said "identity theft" and claimed he was bringing his complaint to the FTC. I'm pretty sure the FTC refused to talk to him because nothing was stolen.
The scam "NVIDIA GPU Upgrade Treadmill" is really annoying.
OS update - "we are sorry, your card is no longer supported with the current driver version, so the previous is still installed"
ok. whatever, it still works fine.
App update a little later - "we are sorry, your driver is no longer supported you must upgrade to the latest version"
arrrgh.
Looking forward to this AI focused RISC V board this fall with a huge TPU.. Get off this f-ing NVIDIA train once and for all.

Actually, we had that issue in our Friday Videogame Orgy.
A friend of mine brings an old Lubuntu PC to run retrogames on. The PC is actually 12 years old or so, but this guy keeps it properly maintained - with updates and everything.
This computers comes with an ancient NVidia card, which requires old drivers. My friend uses the distro-specific software to keep everything (kernel, packages, drivers) updated.
Yesterday we noticed one of the games was working very badly. I checked the available kernel modules and it turns out he had NVidia modules for old kernels he had upgraded past through, but the computer had no NVidia modules available for the current kernel. It turns out there are no NVidia modules which support both this old GPU and a new kernel. Luckily, we reverted back to a good Kernel + NVidia driver combination and fixed the gaming orgy.
Still, that computer is now officially EOLed for no good reason.
