Yeah, it's getting really annoying because you can't trust anyone to be a good solid seller anymore.

I had a repeating problem (discussed here earlier I think) where I would order something on eBay specifically to avoid doing business with Amazon, and the seller would just do their fulfillment through Amazon.

Another problem with eBay is that half the crap on there is cheap chinese counterfeit stuff. In the past it would say "OEM" which you knew was bullshit but for the price it was ok; now they just sell counterfeit stuff with first-party branding and labels, and even if you can spot the difference on the product you won't know from the web site because they use the original manufacturer's photo. Try buying a battery online that isn't a chinese ripoff with a fraction of the rated capacity.

And now back to Amazon ... it's starting to fill up with sellers who peddle cheaply manufactured crap masquerading as real merchandise, and when the wrong item arrives you have to have a conversation with them in broken English to get the issue resolved.

At this point I might as well just bypass Silicon Valley completely and order everything from Alibaba.

Poor IGnatius...

Recently I have been using Amazon for locating sellers that have their own infrastructures. For xaemple, I will search for a DVD and list the sellers who have it... then look for those sellers elsewhere on the Internet and purchase directly from them if they have that possibility.

eBay was supposed to be about people selling stuff they found in their basement and they no longer wanted. Now it has turnd into another massive fleamarket for professional resellers only. What a shame. I have lots of things I'd sell for pennies, but I can't use this platforms because they are so expensive for a casual seller. In the end I end up resorting to local meatspace market for those.

Seems too that Facebook Marketplace has become the new Craigslist..... I've had some success selling things - but honestly, more than 50% of people contacting me don't speak English. I just ignroe them.

Internet sales are like that.

ADVERTISEMENT: "I am selling this red ball by BallMaker Inc, 3 dollar, non negotiable".

Responses: "What color is the ball you are selling?" "Which brand is the ball?" "Will you send it to me for 1 dollar?"

Well the person never mentioned what shape it was.

Internet help forums can be the same way.
My sprocket doesn't work, I tried adjusting the cam screw, but it didn't help, Google lead me to this form.

Answers:

"Did you try adjusting the cam screw????"
"If you google it you will find the answer."

THIS

I try to make my regular websites free from google and other dangerous demons, but the surface Internet is a lost cause. Onthe the underground remains.

I'm so fucking done with Facebook. I enjoy being able to connect with the majority of old friends - but the partisan rage has just become too much, and this election pushed it all past 11 on the volume.

An old liberal girlfriend who basically ghosted me when I was 22 because I rejected her  - that I've known since Jr. High... she found me on Facebook, has a husband, has a kid, has a good life, and re-friended me. I was glad to see she had grown up and gotten past her demons.

Then, she defriended me when Biden won, and left me a pretty shitty, gloating message. Like, she was waiting just for this to happen so she could show she hasn't changed a bit in 30 years.

That kind of shit? Who needs it?

The Marketplace has been useful for me too - and I like some of the groups - the retro ones and the FPGA ones are free of SJW bullshit for the most part...

I agree that we need just a little more traffic on sites like this. I wish I could get my dynamic dns reliably updating my IP address so that my Citadel doesn't keep disappearing from the Net if I forget to update it manually every time I get a new DHCP lease. I would just pay Cox for a static IP address that I could host from - if they offered that as a non-business option. But I can't really justify paying business Internet prices to host a casual BBS. They know this, of course - and that is what is intended.

My wife quit first, for the same reasons. Today we were out in the yard talking about it, and I said, "You should start logging in to my BBS. It doesn't HAVE to be a nerd thing."

She was like, "But no one else but nerds will be there."

I said, "Facebook was like that originally. Someone needs to make this happen, an alternative to Facebook - and instead of WAITING for it to happen, why not MAKE it happen. You create an account, create a room, learn how it works, post family pictures there, tell your friends and family to log in and create accounts to see your posts... and eventually, it gets a critical mass."

Of course, then a lot of the bullshit will come along with that critical mass. But in either case, it seems like it is about time for Facebook to do a DIGG 2.0 or MySpace and fade to have some other social media phenomenon rise from its ashes.

With all their censorship and invasive data mining out in the open now, i think we are seeing the start of the collapse of FB actually. People now see what they are doing, and how much of a scumbag Mark is.

Some of the reasons you mention are while i put up an alternative out on TOR, I was not really prepared for the overhead if it did become big. so never really told anyone its there... TOR hosting was just to avoid governmental and legal intervention due to possible content ( i would NEVER filter.. don't like something, put on your big girl panties and just move on ), but you still have the maintenance nightmare if it becomes a 'hit' and you are overwhelmed by volume.

It has occurred to me that the move to deplatform Facebook and Twitter will probably still move ahead - and it won't really materially affect two platforms now called publishers who have billions of dollars and an army of legal team to fight cases.

But it will kill places like this. I see another swindle about to take place. We'll become pirate radio - underground printing presses... enemies of the State spreading false information that must be shut down for the good of society.

Facebook and Twitter meanwhile will just have algorithms post "Fact Checks" by Politifact that say "partially untrue," which means, "Not completely false."

And the sheep will continue to graze in fields of ignorance.

Coming to someone you know, far faster than we thought it would happen.

I suspect they arrest you for some OTHER crime, though - and most people never question it. They've protected society from another bad person, and we should keep voting for them, so they can keep protecting us.

Problem with Parler is they want a picture of your drivers license to DM.  Not that you cant use their platform without, but for a company that supposedly supports 'freedom', it seems inappropriate.

To get a "verified user badge", i guess its ok, but just to get basic functionality expected on a social media site? Seems shady.

I have heard other rumors too, that they will remove things if they dont like what you have to say ( like everyone else, but not as bad as some others ). But really speech should be 'free for all', not 'free for some', and no filters.

I'm pretty sure even my most reasonable friends on the Left are afraid to connect to my BBS because they think I'll silence them. I think my unreasonable friends on the Left are afraid to connect because they know there won't be any Facebook mods to bail them out if we get into it and they play rough and I respond in kind. Either way, it creates a problem where it becomes an echo chamber - and I don't want that. I don't want online communication where it is just the choir preaching to one another. But, if both sides are represented, one side shouldn't constantly get to say shitty things and if their opposition responds equally shitty, their opposition gets censored.

And that is how it is working now - and Gab, Parler and MeWe seem like they're just practicing the reverse of what Facebook and Twitter are doing. That doesn't help at all.
