Depends on the animal, I guess. A few years ago we adopted a two year old tom who had been recently neutered. He was (and still is) the master of the "four point knead" which is weird but hysterical. But at the beginning it was a "five point knead" which was weird and creepy.

Thankfully, over the first few months the testosterone worked its way out of his system, and the habit stopped. He's a good it now.

I would like to see a study on this phenomenon. I think that there is some
property of super glue that it can only pass through a >=2mm diameter hole.
And I where everything else on earth is sold in a container misleadingly large,
I'm pretty sure they package super glue under pressure.

Actually I think Nvidia should opensource the kernel modules to stop this
nonsense. As fr as I know they have announced they are doing it. Then people
could just try to maintain the foss module if they wantit to work with newer
machines.

Also, I think we'd rather downgrade the kernel rather than waste our time
supporting unmaintained software just because we want to play Pokemon Yellow
a couple hours per week.

Actually, it is an older office machine repurposed for games.

This guy is an IT pro, but not the sort who breathes and lives IT outside
work (ie. not me) so I can guarantee he wants nothing to do with file servers
or whatever. This computer is only good for gaming as far as he is concerned.

Personally, I consider a product EOLed when it has no more vendor support,
but I will gladly keep using it within a safe context. I don't feel like putting
working stuff in the trash bin.

Ok that was worded wrong. Separate the kernel line form the GPU line. i was meaning OSS and newer kernels pretty much support older stuff so its not a good comparison to GPU drivers.

And people DO reverse engineer those drivers, its why we have stuff like nouveau. Also im an idiot it seems as, it seems NVIDIA *IS* open sourcing something ... started a couple of years ago. I will have to look at the details more. If they really are contributing and not just pretending ( like so many do ), ill back off on my hatred, a little.

Honestly i dont think it would be a huge tech lift to support older cards longer. Sure, you lose out on neat features, and run into software that needs the new stuff, but the basic underlying architecture isn't really changing. Supporting old kernels, not sure that is a 1:1 comparison as long as the new one still works on your older hardware, which normally it does. ( 32bit/64bit discussion not withstanding )

And ya, at the least they could donate the old drivers source after retirement. But they wont do that, they are power hungry jerks.

Devil's advocate: if you think NVidia should still maintain old drivers,
why can't the distro keep maintaining old kernels?

Anyway, I'm no OSS GNU zealot but obviously the least effort fix for everyone
would be for NVidia to release their old driver source for the community to
maintain. If they have some super secret sauce in there that they don't want
to reveal, then they can split their modules into an open source layer that
provides the closed source layer with a stable API to the rest of the kernel.

As I wrote that, it also occurred to me: I wonder how possible it would be
to decompile their modules and update them? You don't have to understand everything
about it, just the interfaces that change from kernel version to kernel version.

The OSS driver wont be a game machine i agree, but just doing 'stuff' and watching a video, its ok for. Could convert it into a file server or something too and skip the GPU totally. ( I assume the video is onboard.. )

Actually, we had that issue in our Friday Videogame Orgy.

A friend of mine brings an old Lubuntu PC to run retrogames on. The PC is
actually 12 years old or so, but this guy keeps it properly maintained - with
updates and everything.

This computers comes with an ancient NVidia card, which requires
old drivers. My friend uses the distro-specific software to keep everything
(kernel, packages, drivers) updated.

Yesterday we noticed one of the games was working very badly. I checked the
available kernel modules and it turns out he had NVidia modules for old kernels
he had upgraded past through, but the computer had no NVidia modules available
for the current kernel. It turns out there are no NVidia modules which support
both this old GPU and a new kernel. Luckily, we reverted back to a good Kernel
+ NVidia driver combination and fixed the gaming orgy.

Still, that computer is now officially EOLed for no good reason.

Such a shame. I had no complaints with my Kobo Libra 2 for two years, but today when I tried putting new files on it they refused to show up. It's possible I could have fixed this by converting them with the kepubify utility, which I just learned about. Instead I did a factory reset in hopes of fixing database corruption. Lo and behold, what do I find during the setup procedure? Apparently "signing in" is now mandatory, and not something I can just skip like I did before. It didn't recognize the email address that I know I ordered it with, and when I tried creating a new account with another email address, I never received an email. Sad, but I only have one life and it's too short to waste on nonsense like this. So I'm done with Kobo and all their works, and I eagerly await a device with an e-ink screen that runs a real OS which is under my control and doesn't demand I jump through corporate hoops and create Yet Another Account on Yet Another Website.

Of course my physical books will never have any such problems. But it's a shame that a great technology like e-ink is the victim of such widespread, near-universal corporate malfeasance.

>After you have gone thru 10 starters and 30 batteries..

The starters are beefier these days. They tend to be combination alternator/generators,
borrowed from hybrid tech, even on pure ICE. And a good transmission (like
the ZF 8HP) assits with the process by storing some pressurized fluid on shutdown
to provide a brief starter boost when you take your foot off the brake, like
releasing a spring.

You're not wrong about the shape of quality in the car industry more broadly.
The manufacturer of my sedan tends to skimp on scheduled maintenance recommendations
because they figure you're not going to keep the thing past 100K miles. So,
no recommendations about changing transmission, transfer case, or differential
fluids, even though there definitely should be. And the use of a 75W-80, low
friction gear oil instead of a traditional 80W-90. This provides lower-friction,
lower temperature operation and enables them to build a physically smaller
differential, but these oils are designed with a higher priority on gas mileage
and a lower priority on strength and protection.

Funny how the guidelines changed when they started providing complimentary
scheduled maintenance, and then *didn't change back* when they dropped that
perk!

Auto-Stop-Start is somewhat gimmicky as even having the air conditioner running won't allow it to work. It's supposed to halp gas-only cars use less gas by having the explodatron turn off at a traffic light. Problem is it only works in winter, since as stated previously, having the air conditioner running disables Auto-Stop-Start. I'd rather have my hybrid. It never runs the explodatron at a stop light.

As for the "key" just being a thing that constantly transmits a low-power radio signal with its serial number ... ya, it has a physical key. That key is required by law to mechanically actuate the lock. Tho cars makers these days don't really care what the law says, the park/emergency brake in my Ford Escape is illegal in Texas since it's motor driven instead of direct-cable.

Unsure if the one for my wife is electrical switch or not. Didn't know they were doing that crap too. Would make it impossible to open the hood if the battery died..

And with the auto stop-start crap. My understanding is that normally it watches a 2nd switch under the hood. ( at least that is the case with the jeeps, as i was reading about it )That way when the hood is open ( like for repairs ), its disabled. I guess more come with a way to disable them officially now.

And it's one more
thing to break. And it's funny that is coming up now -- just this past weekend,
my mom and dad were visiting and they just about got stuck here because their
car refused to unlock. We thought the battery was dead in the key fob, but
replacing it didn't work, nor did the other key fob, and nor did the little
physical key that you can pull out of the fob. Apparently that little physical
key doesn't have a mechanical linkage to the door lock; it simply activates
a switch. The whole damn thing just refused to activate. After a few trillion
attempts we got it to activate once (and only once -- after that it stayed
broken). Thankfully, once was enough to get them to the point of "leave it
unlocked, leave the window down, drive home and call for service tomorrow
morning."

My truck has power locks but the keyhole
in the door is mechanically linked to the lock in that door. But I don't
have auto-start-stop (something else no one asked for). It will open even
if the battery is missing. Someday all cars will have this crap and there
won't be anything you can do about it. As our old friend Ford II used to
say -- "this is called 'progress'."

Wife has one like that. Only key it has is one embedded in the 200 dollar fob ( i asked.. how much is a replacement ) so you can unlock the door if the battery is dead. I guess you get to sit in a cold car and wait for the tow truck or something.

Not long ago, it freaked out and refused to acknowledge the fob to start, even tho it unlocked the doors. Car was in effect a brick. I tracked it down to the car's battery, even tho it was 'working' it 'wasn't' and the ECM was freaking out. I was able to jump start it, in effect, and get it to the dealer. To the dealer as if you sneeze on the car they void warranty. "sorry this isn't covered, 500 bucks you owe us" for a freaking battery, and 20 dollar corroded cable. ( which i would have seen if i took it apart but figured the battery was serialized and recorded so didnt even try. Plus you have to take the damned wheel off and pull a panel to get to it.. idiot engineers ... ) "yes, if you did it yourself it would not void warranty since its not covered"

Burnt us again a year later. Same sort of thing " oh, its not covered, you owe us 275 to have looked at it, or 350 if you want us to fix it.. ( a 10 dollar part.. but now you are committed )

"Ok this is twice i have been burnt by this so-called warranty that doesnt cover crap, how do i know next time if something is covered before i come?" "well, you have to bring it in and we evaluate it at 275 dollars and then we decide" wtf.. no. Next time i'm demanding a list upfront. They will not want to deal with me.

Also gave me a lot of excuses "well, example is if the exhaust manifold breaks due to a bad weld its covered, but if a bolt breaks or the gasket fails, its not, so we have to look at it first" really? I tried to talk her out of paying for that "warranty".. "its a con job". now she believes me.

The fob i had on my Eldo was purely convenience. I'm ok with that idea, being optional, and i left it home. But the constant beeping and flashing of headlights around here night and day.. no.

Oh and remote start is also stupid. :) They added it to my jeep before i bought it, aftermarket. I tried it one winter when it was like 10 below zero. It started. Ok, that worked.. I wait about 5 minutes, go out. it wont blow hot ( or AC ) air on remote start, so the thing was still cold. So what the hell is the value?

Reducing waste is good. Increasing the toxicity of the area, not so good.

That old house was built in 1938. I'm looking at it on a real estate site
now and the last seller apparently lied and said that it was insulated. The
lower level most certainly was not. "Enjoy cozy cottage living at its finest"
haha. The fireplace was really drafty.

For many years we dealt with a piece of wood that had been cut into the shape
of a damper when the old damper had presumably rotted out a long time ago.
One time we even had a bat in the house that had flown down the chimney.

A few years before we moved I learned about a wonderful device called a "top
closing damper". It sits on the top of the chimney and completely seals the
flue when not in use. You operate it with a chain from the bottom.

When the house went back on the market again six years after we sold it,
the next owner had replaced the open fireplace with one of those cast iron
stove inserts.

Perhaps it's because this house was built in Pennsylvania and then trucked
over to New York? I didn't know we had a reputation for homes with fireplaces.

Paper just doesn't burn as well as hardwood. The smoke is terrible. Some
advertisement paper has so many chemicals in it that the flame will be green
instead of fiery red or orange, and you cannot use it for cooking.

I'd rather burn horse poo if I run out of hardwood.

Paper is great for getting the fire started, which is the reason why I keep
so much waste paper around.

Believe it or not, we are subscribed to some bulk mail lists for legit reasons,
so we sometimes get both good spam and bad spam from the same provider.

I cannot just go and add the bulk mail provider directly to the blacklist
because then the good spam will go to the void and people will start complaining.

Oftentimes you don't need to sue. Just send a complaint to their infrastructure
provider. If the firm is not that big, the provider often decides the money
they get is not worth the trouble of hosting a spammer.

We once had a comapany send our staff spam email non stop at one of my jobs.
They would send some of out employees multiple emails per day. I wrote some
filters to block their domains, but they kept changing domains and they
also ignored unsubscribe
requests. Eventually I raised a ticket with their email provider and their
webhost provider and they were taken down for weeks.

They would then start phoning us and asking us to tell their providers our
complaint had been a misunderstanding. Misunderstanding my ass.

These two statements are funny to see one right after the other. Believe
me, I was a staunch opponent of people using "The F Word" during the days
of videotape, but I think that battle is long lost, exactly for the reason
you mentioned about Chyron: enough usage makes a word generic.

The relevant definition of "film" (verb) in the Merriam-Webster dictionary
is "to make a motion picture of or from". They conveniently exclude any mention
of the technology used to create a motion picture.

It's made even worse by the fact that people who don't say "filming" will
still say "taping" even though there is no videotape in any modern camera
system. I've even heard (in the last 24 hours in fact) people use expressions
like "filming a video". The battle is truly lost on this
one, and in my opinion, not worth arguing about. And that's coming from me,
someone who *adores* pedantry.

Contrariwise, referring to a crawl as a "chyron" has no justification, no
linguistic convenience, and came into use because some of the worst people
in the world (the broadcast propaganda industry) got it wrong and its use
became widespread.

You know what really grinds my gears?

The cable "news" industry has decided that the moving text on the bottom
of the screen is called a "chyron".

No it isn't. Chyron is the name of a company that manufactures on-screen
graphics hardware for the broadcast industry. The moving text on the bottom
of the screen is called a "crawl". It always has been, and everyone in the
industry has always known that.

A pox upon the house that first conflated these terms.

I'm pretty sure even my most reasonable friends on the Left are afraid to connect to my BBS because they think I'll silence them. I think my unreasonable friends on the Left are afraid to connect because they know there won't be any Facebook mods to bail them out if we get into it and they play rough and I respond in kind. Either way, it creates a problem where it becomes an echo chamber - and I don't want that. I don't want online communication where it is just the choir preaching to one another. But, if both sides are represented, one side shouldn't constantly get to say shitty things and if their opposition responds equally shitty, their opposition gets censored.

And that is how it is working now - and Gab, Parler and MeWe seem like they're just practicing the reverse of what Facebook and Twitter are doing. That doesn't help at all.

It has occurred to me that the move to deplatform Facebook and Twitter will probably still move ahead - and it won't really materially affect two platforms now called publishers who have billions of dollars and an army of legal team to fight cases.

But it will kill places like this. I see another swindle about to take place. We'll become pirate radio - underground printing presses... enemies of the State spreading false information that must be shut down for the good of society.

Facebook and Twitter meanwhile will just have algorithms post "Fact Checks" by Politifact that say "partially untrue," which means, "Not completely false."

Poor IGnatius...

Recently I have been using Amazon for locating sellers that have their own
infrastructures. For xaemple, I will search for a DVD and list the sellers
who have it... then look for those sellers elsewhere on the Internet and purchase
directly from them if they have that possibility.

eBay was supposed to be about people
selling stuff they found in their basement and they no longer wanted. Now
it has turnd into another massive fleamarket for professional resellers only.
What a shame. I have lots of things I'd sell for pennies, but I can't use
this platforms because they are so expensive for a casual seller. In the end
I end up resorting to local meatspace market for those.

At this point I might as well just bypass Silicon Valley completely and order
everything from Alibaba.

Last year just before Thanksgiving my mother's computer decided to stop working. Monday of Thanksgiving week I ordered a new computer for her the estimated delivery date was December 4th which was perfect, the family is traveling for Thanksgiving, the computer would arrive the following the holiday. I didn't expect too much Thanksgiving week. I am 600 miles away and I get a notice saying my computer will arrive on Friday after Thanksgiving no signature required. I called FedEx to put a hold, a "pick up at FedEx" or pick up at Walgreens option. FedEx said that only Dell can make changes to the delivery. It took me forever to get through Dell's nightmare phone trees only to speak twice to someone in India who transferred me to FedEx.
No one at Dell could figure out what the problem was or how to solve it. I think I had a 'they are not there because of the holiday' answer. (WTF!)

Hey I am glad both items arrived early but people make other plans when they have a set date.

To be honest, it feel a lot like what happened with the OpenOffice -> LibreOffice
split. I have not looked at any stats but my gut feeling is that NextCloud
is getting more development.

I think the original OwnCloud developer is working at NextCloud at this point.

I don't think there is a reason to migrate from OwnCloud unless you absolutelly
need it, and OwnCloud is prety much still well supported. But the OpenBSD
ports team dropped OwnCloud when NextCloud was merged in their ports tree.
That should tell you something.

Nope...I'm currently running ownCloud 10.2.1.4 from RPM. The latest stable version from Owncloud, itself, is 10.3, so I'm not far off.

It does appear, though, that NextCloud has more features built in than does ownCloud, so that, possibly, fewer plugins would be needed.

My only issue, at the moment, is trying to determine whether or not I can do a drop-in replacement of ownCloud, or if I'm going to have to install it, separately, and try to migrate over.

It didn't die on its own. The DNS resolution at that LAN turned to have crapped
out, which made the application less responsive because it makes so many connections
to third parties.

The REALLY annoying thing is that the logs were not showing that.

Nextcloud is a bit of a bloatware, but it works well if you need to coordinate
a group of computer illiterates. Also great for sharing files via links or
emails since the web interface has the means to do that automatically. You
can set email and calendar and contacts and extra plugins, but we have Citadel
for that :)

I see this specific misspelling a lot:

http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/76-gnome/283-gnome-shell-install-extension-command-line-script

Just above '2. Automatic Installation Script', you see this line:

"If you forget it, you will loose your terminal prompt !"

Mind you, there are worse things in the world to unleash upon the world than
a terminal prompt. My father's ex-wives, his current one, volcanic activity,
American politics, pollen, and crippling arthritis strike me as being worse
than terminal prompts to unleash upon an unsuspecting world. But then, I'm
a bit more familiar with most command-line driven interfaces than your average
person, so I could probably get around in such situations. Loosing a terminal
prompt on folks who have never experienced one would likely lead to an extreme
lack of productivity.

Agree with that. And at least in that scenario you end up somewhere else, as you said - not dealing with such assholes. Much worse when they hide it and pretend that they *want* female leaders, when in fact, it's just a smokescreen for the bigotry you spoke of.

Being female, I completely agree with you, IGgy and Fleeb.

Frankly, I don't want a job, promotion, award, etc. simply because I'm female or Jewish, or <insert other "class" here>. I want to earn my success, just like anyone else.

That said, I also do not want to be prevented from receiving my just due on the above if I *have* earned it - simply because I'm female or Jewish, or <insert other "class" here>.

Right now, there is far too much of the latter - and far too many people who still expect "favors" in return...regardless of merit (including at my current place of work).

If I've earned the damn promotion, then promote me; if I have not, well then give it to someone who DID earn it. But don't give it to someone else who did NOT earn it simply (and worse, obviously) because I'm a woman and/or <insert other "class" here> and the other person is not a woman and/or <insert other "class" here>.

yea, had one of that too while I was working at 7val.

Her claim was, that she could program C (they told her so at the college she came from...). But she didn't even know what a pointer was. by any means. So I told her that with that amount of C she may be able to do by now she wouldn't be able to walk into a store and purchase an apple.

"But she's shuch a good fit for the team - social competence" and such. I was given an admonishment for stretching my competencies. So they hired here to waste half a year of venture capital on her to notice what I said in the first place and fire her again.

Nope ... affirmative action is the forced inclusion of bad code into software projects simply because it was written by people in "protected classes" (what they used to call minorities).

Fuck that noise. Write good code and it goes into the build, I don't care what color your skin is or what your genitals look like. Write shitty code and it gets thrown in the trash, even if you look like I do, talk like I do, worship like I do, and fuck like I do.

Software ... at least open source software ... is a true meritocracy that has so far remained untouched by social justice warriors. It demonstrates quite clearly that we as a society really are capable of living in unity if the special interest fuckheads would just quit their demagoguery. SJW's seriously need to die in a car fire. Every one of them, from the stupid cunt chanting mindless slogans on a college campus all the way up to the enemy of Western civilization currently occupying the white house.

I read this thing ESR wrote (and to which IG responded) concerning feminazis
trying to make a case for leveraging a legal battle against certain influential
people in the industry for not being more 'inclusive', instead of the merit
system.

That is, these folks would prefer that if someone black, female, and transgendered
submitted code to Citadel, it should be preferred over dothebart's efforts
regardless of whether or not it would work better.

I wish they would expend their efforts actually training black, female, transgendered
people into writing really good software. They might actually contribute
something of use to society.
