Not having open source kernel modules doesn't really buy them anything anyway.
The real IP is the chip design and the firmware. The drivers just bind it to the kernel API.

(And yes, I know that binary firmware blobs make RMS unhappy, but that's a feature, not a bug.)

Ok that was worded wrong. Separate the kernel line form the GPU line. i was meaning OSS and newer kernels pretty much support older stuff so its not a good comparison to GPU drivers.

And people DO reverse engineer those drivers, its why we have stuff like nouveau.   Also im an idiot it seems as, it seems NVIDIA *IS* open sourcing something ...  started a couple of years ago. I will have to look at the details more.  If they really are contributing and not just pretending ( like so many do ), ill back off on my hatred, a little. 

Honestly i dont think it would be a huge tech lift to support older cards longer. Sure, you lose out on neat features, and run into software that needs the new stuff, but the basic underlying architecture isn't really changing. Supporting old kernels, not sure that is a 1:1 comparison as long as the new one still works on your older hardware, which normally it does.  ( 32bit/64bit discussion not withstanding )

And ya, at the least they could donate the old drivers source after retirement.  But they wont do that, they are power hungry jerks.

Such a shame. I had no complaints with my Kobo Libra 2 for two years, but today when I tried putting new files on it they refused to show up. It's possible I could have fixed this by converting them with the kepubify utility, which I just learned about. Instead I did a factory reset in hopes of fixing database corruption. Lo and behold, what do I find during the setup procedure? Apparently "signing in" is now mandatory, and not something I can just skip like I did before. It didn't recognize the email address that I know I ordered it with, and when I tried creating a new account with another email address, I never received an email. Sad, but I only have one life and it's too short to waste on nonsense like this. So I'm done with Kobo and all their works, and I eagerly await a device with an e-ink screen that runs a real OS which is under my control and doesn't demand I jump through corporate hoops and create Yet Another Account on Yet Another Website.

Of course my physical books will never have any such problems. But it's a shame that a great technology like e-ink is the victim of such widespread, near-universal corporate malfeasance.

That is because it has nothing to do with environmental impact.

That's great, but it still doesn't address the fact that when the engine is not running, all the oil is in the pan, not in the engine block. All those extra starts therefore shorten the life of the entire drive train ... just so they can eke out a couple more MPG on paper.

Auto-Stop-Start is somewhat gimmicky as even having the air conditioner running won't allow it to work.  It's supposed to halp gas-only cars use less gas by having the explodatron turn off at a traffic light.  Problem is it only works in winter, since as stated previously, having the air conditioner running disables Auto-Stop-Start.  I'd rather have my hybrid.  It never runs the explodatron at a stop light.

As for the "key" just being a thing that constantly transmits a low-power radio signal with its serial number ... ya, it has a physical key.  That key is required by law to mechanically actuate the lock.  Tho cars makers these days don't really care what the law says, the park/emergency brake in my Ford Escape is illegal in Texas since it's motor driven instead of direct-cable.

And with the auto stop-start crap.   My understanding is that normally it watches a 2nd switch under the hood. (  at least that is the case with the jeeps, as i was reading about it )That way when the hood is open ( like for repairs ), its disabled. I guess more come with a way to disable them officially now. 

Wife has one like that.  Only key it has is one embedded in the 200 dollar fob ( i asked.. how much is a replacement ) so you can unlock the door if the battery is dead.  I guess you get to sit in a cold car and wait for the tow truck or something. 

Not long ago, it freaked out and refused to acknowledge the fob to start, even tho it unlocked the doors. Car was in effect a brick.  I tracked it down to the car's battery, even tho it was 'working' it 'wasn't' and the ECM was freaking out.  I was able to jump start it, in effect, and get it to the dealer.  To the dealer as if you sneeze on the car they void warranty. "sorry this isn't covered, 500 bucks you owe us"   for a freaking battery, and 20 dollar corroded cable. ( which i would have seen if i took it apart but figured the battery was serialized and recorded so didnt even try. Plus you have to take the damned wheel off and pull a panel to get to it.. idiot engineers ... ) "yes, if you did it yourself it would not void warranty since its not covered"

Burnt us again a year later. Same sort of thing " oh, its not covered, you owe us 275 to have looked at it, or 350 if you want us to fix it..  ( a 10 dollar part.. but now you are committed )

Oh and remote start is also stupid.  :)    They added it to my jeep before i bought it, aftermarket. I tried it one winter when it was like 10 below zero. It started. Ok, that worked..  I wait about 5 minutes, go out. it wont blow hot ( or AC ) air on remote start, so the thing was still cold.  So what the hell is the value?

I absolutely loathe this new wireless key fob shit. My last car had a fob and I left it at home, always used the physical key to unlock and crank. My current car is a pushbutton start, there's no physical key except for the one built into this massive brick of a fob that takes up most of my pocket space, and I frequently come into the garage to find doors unlocked or windows rolled down because I had accidentally hit buttons in my pocket. Yeah, that's right, it has a "feature" that some combination of buttons unlocks all of the doors and rolls all of the windows down. I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to do that. It has to be there only to troll me.

In another tread I said I ordered from Amazon because I could not find the product from anywhere else.  When I ordered it said "Will arrive on June 2nd".... it is arriving today.  I am thrilled it is arriving early, I don't like the discrepancy.  

Last year just before Thanksgiving my mother's computer decided to stop working.  Monday of Thanksgiving week I ordered a new computer for her the estimated delivery date was December 4th which was perfect, the family is traveling for Thanksgiving, the computer would arrive the following the holiday.  I didn't expect too much Thanksgiving week.  I am 600 miles away and I get a notice saying my computer will arrive on Friday after Thanksgiving no signature required.  I called FedEx to put a hold, a "pick up at FedEx" or pick up at Walgreens option. FedEx said that only Dell can make changes to the delivery. It took me forever to get through Dell's nightmare phone trees only to speak twice to someone in India who transferred me to FedEx.
No one at Dell could figure out what the problem was or how to solve it.  I think I had a 'they are not there because of the holiday' answer. (WTF!)

Hey I am glad both items arrived early but people make other plans when they have a set date.

Nope...I'm currently running ownCloud 10.2.1.4 from RPM. The latest stable version from Owncloud, itself, is 10.3, so I'm not far off.

It does appear, though, that NextCloud has more features built in than does ownCloud, so that, possibly, fewer plugins would be needed.

My only issue, at the moment, is trying to determine whether or not I can do a drop-in replacement of ownCloud, or if I'm going to have to install it, separately, and try to migrate over.

I've been using OwnCloud...similar concept, no email/messaging/video/audio chat that I'm aware of. I'm using it as for file/calendar/contacts.

And I still love my Osborne I - sitting in a box in the garage.  I hope to have space in the near future so I can unpack it.

I've said for over ten years it's a cruel joke to call anything "portable" with a battery life of less than 24 hours.

But they still don't support any form of single sign on. No LDAP, no TACACS, nothing except local accounts. And when you have storage administrators who guard the array passwords like they're the f***ing crown jewels, this gets frustrating. 

Is that the same for the SVMs? I'm trying to figure out, currently, how to grant my Windows admins centralized authentication, via AD/LDAP for share management within the SVMs and not finding anything, so far.

When the idea of affirmative action was first introduced, the concept was simply that the demographic breakdown of employees or students or whatever, should roughly match the demographics of the pool of qualified applicants available at that time, and if it didn't, someone should investigate to make sure there is no discrimination going on.  That was the beginning and end of it, and it was a reasonable thing.

Right now, there is far too much of the latter - and far too many people who still expect "favors" in return...regardless of merit (including at my current place of work).

If I've earned the damn promotion, then promote me; if I have not, well then give it to someone who DID earn it.  But don't give it to someone else who did NOT earn it simply (and worse, obviously) because I'm a woman and/or <insert other "class" here> and the other person is not a woman and/or <insert other "class" here>.

Her claim was, that she could program C (they told her so at the college she came from...). But she didn't even know what a pointer was. by any means. So I told her that with that amount of C she may be able to do by now she wouldn't be able to walk into a store and purchase an apple.

There's this networking-computer-appliance type of thing that we just racked up.  It's got a web interface that you configure to get started, but you quickly find out that the web interface is very limited and they really want you to install their management software.  So far this is sounding very early-1990's, right?

This morning I sent an email to the CEO of Adobe after discovering that they have products that are supported on Windows and Mac but not on Linux.  I'm sure it was an oversight and I trust that they will fix this problem immediately.
