The FDA is planning to ban menthol cigarettes.   The media is hyping it up saying it will improve the lives of African-Americans.  They are not saying banning cigarettes would save their lives, just that the FDA is doing this wonderful thing.

If we were under a republican president the media would be talking about how the administration was targeting the black community.

I love how the media puts an appropriate spin on everything.

I saw that too, not the reasoning but they were going to.

Not that i'm a smoker and personally think it stupid, but as long as someone does not blow it in my face, or make me pay the bill if they get sick, more power to them.

In my experience, black people who smoke menthol cigarettes usually have done harder drugs already.

But, white people who smoke usually have done harder drugs already, too.

And MOST people you know have done harder drugs than cigarettes at some point in their life, anyhow (and many responsible, successful adults STILL do) - they just don't broadcast it.

The person consumed with substance abuse that impacts their life in a terrible way is the most visible hard drug user, and the most graphic example of the *risks* of hard drug use leading to hard drug abuse.

But I think throughout history - there have always been a preponderance of functional addicts. The people who actually *are* straight and clean their entire lives are the LARGEST minority.

And that isn't counting legal, prescribed drugs.

Also... some truths about menthol cigarettes.

It is absolutely a black thing. And a huge part of it is that most white smokers will turn down a menthol cigarette. Whenever I was younger and I'd try to bum a smoke off a black dude, they would give me this sad, "Aww," look like they were really bummed that they couldn't help me out, and then hold out their pack and go, "Sorry, dude, I only smoke menthol..."

And when I'd go, "So did my dad - I'm ok with a menthol," they would get a look of disappointment on their face instantly. "Damnit! Now I gotta give this whiteboy a smoke."

But I've seen white folks who were *jonseing* for nicotine reject a menthol.

"Ew. How you can smoke THAT shit?!?"

So... it works, because of stereotypes both ways.

There are other interesting factors about menthol smokers. They're the least successful at quitting - they hit their cigarette *harder* than non-menthol smokers. They tend to be more likely to be chain smokers. Menthol is certainly a problematic part of the tobacco industry.

I believe menthol cigarettes were originally marked as a safer cigarette or at least easier to smoke for people with lung and breathing issues.

Isn't Vick's rub menthol?  It is supposed to open up the passageways?

You're probably right. Also as more refreshing. I think it increases nicotine delivery too. It is basically the freebasing of nicotine delivery.

Vics smells nice... but have you ever TASTED it? :)

Menthol isn't a particularly enticing flavor. It isn't like bubble-gum vape.

But - I also think telling adults, "You can have this dangerous chemical that is addictive, but to remind you it is bad, you can't have it in nice flavors," is bullshit. Especially when, you know - nobody is mentioning that sweet flavored alcohols are just as big of a draw to young drinkers as sweet vapes are to young smokers.

We should make all alcohol taste like horseshit too. Probably food, too - because that is why we're all fat - everything tastes good. Take out all the salt, sugar, and fat.

I mean... that *is* the strategy - and I've been pointing it out for years. Go after something with no sympathy... tobacco and tobacco users - and once you set the precedent of, "We did these things for their own good..."

Then you can justify doing it for other things, in succession - until you're talking about "The Great Reset" and how regular people aren't going to be allowed to eat meat, anymore... for their own good, and the collective good - of course.

If someone wants to operate a smoking bar or restaurant - let them. If you don't want to eat, drink or work there - DON'T. That was the first round of "public health bans" where we let the government decide, instead of the free market.

And it *has* been a slippery slope from there - where today, they're LITERALLY emboldened to be suggesting that they're GOING to take away the *choice* to eat meat for the global population.

The kind of people with these causes that allow them to tell you how to live YOUR life because YOUR choices affect everyone else - will ALWAYS find the next cause and think it is as important as the last one WAS.

Once they fix toxic straight white males - they've ALREADY lines up toxic straight BLACK males as the next project.

There is always a new cause to improve. Nothing is EVER good enough.

And flavored vapes - their days are numbered. Right now I'm vaping Vanilla. I'm a 51 year old man. I shouldn't have to use SHIT FLAVORED vape because KIDS might like the Vanilla stuff. You want to stop kids from vaping - punish them, hard - when you catch them. They fix symptoms - never root causes.

Halls Mentho-Lyptus Drops, Menthol Lozenges

Flavored vapes were outlawed in NY state... and all those vape shops closed.

Its because they tried radical control of alcohol before, and didnt work out too well.  So they are a big gun shy.

Around here on vape, i do think they control advertising, which while not 'perfect' shows they are doing something .  There was also some talk about restricting flavors here.  I dont remember the details.

>> The White House is "aware" of concerns that the Biden administration's proposed menthol cigarettes ban could unfairly target Black people, principal deputy press secretary
>> Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday. Jean-Pierre was asked about the menthol ban during a press gaggle on Thursday.
>> Rev. Al Sharpton has previously said such bans are unfair for Black smokers.  "We are aware of that, and we take that seriously the concerns that have been raised
>> about discriminatory policy, policing, and so addressing racial bias in policing is a priority," Jean-Pierre said.

I don't mind advertising limits... telling grown ass adults that their vice can't taste good is bullshit, though.

Saying that Bubblegum flavored vape is a gateway designed to lure children into smoking is like saying that flavored lube is a gateway designed to lure children into performing oral sex.

Pretty fucking stupid.
