Only if it has already been the hour of the cabbage. And then we have to figure out what to do with that pesky goat...

I guess no one caught the wolf-goat-cabbage reference. Either that or it wasn't funny. Oh well.

It's a puzzle, probably more than a thousand years old. It goes like this:

You have a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage, and you need to get to the other side of a river in a boat that can only carry yourself and one of the three items.

If you leave the wolf unattended with the goat, the wolf will eat the goat.

If you leave the goat unattended with the cabbage, the goat will eat the cabbage.

How do you get yourself and all three items across the river without anything being eaten?

(No web searching, figure it out for yourself.)

Are you allowed to cart things back and forth on each trip ?

That is the only way i can see it working: Keep the vulnerable item on board the boat on successive runs.

Ship goat to B side.

Return alone.

Ship cabbage to B side and return with the goat.

Ship wolf to B side and return alone.

Ship goat to B side.

Did you already know the answer or did you figure it out immediately? (Or did you search the Internet for it like I said not to?)

now solve the nine dots puzzle.

Play nice, people.

So yes, answering the boat problem requires realizing that you can make return trips with vulnerable items on board. It is an exercise in learning not to be bound by constraints that were not placed on you as part of a problem.

My daughter gave me a different answer: "Let the goat eat the cabbage, let the wolf eat the goat, then you only have to make one trip." She didn't solve the puzzle but she got bonus points for efficiency.

I wasn't able to see a way to do it without it..  Short of  tying the wolf to a tree, taking the cabbage first, then come back for wolf.. Then back for goat. But figured that would break the rules.
